I originally thought it odd that a huge level 80 event would be tied to a trial weekend, but with the sheer epic scale of this event I understand [and agree with] why they tied the two together.
That was exactly what a huge world event should be like.
Well done ANet.

I was there from the start, it took nearly 3 hours.

That way it was actually quite an experience.

The lag was horrendous and I was on overflow. I really can't believe any claims of people who say they experienced -no- lag during this. The sheer number of player being funneled into that enclosed spiral along with mass numbers of mobs had to have game-affecting lag even on the highest end systems.
The lag had players dying constantly due to invisible mobs that render right on top of you. My most vivid memories from this event will be laying there dead with dozens of other dead players all waiting to rez.
The number of people could have simply been limited in each shard which would have reduced and the difficulty of the event scaled.
The waves of mobs simply became tedious. By the end it was no longer remotely fun and I'm not sure this would have been any different without the lag. The humber trash mobs and waves could have easily been in half, making the event an hour or hour and a half, which would have made things a bit less tedious.
Running back and forth over that annoying zone. First we have to run to the south end of the island, then back up, then back, then forth, etc. This was fine when you were in the event zerg but it was incredibly frustrating and not fun when you were solo trying to run through those idiotic hatchling/headcrabs mobs who use Cripple and various other effects meant to inhibit your travel.
Deliberately inhibiting players from getting to the action is not good design. The bizarre thing is that we know ArenaNet understands this. They put in waypoints in the open world, they have them in dungeons. Yet this event deliberately took place mostly away from any convenient waypoints in the zone making a tedious event even more annoying.
The only time the event was slightly tolerable was when the karka were in the area of the camp with the bridge. There was a waypoint and an armor repair NPC. The whole event should have taken place in this area (which would not seem uninteresting if the whole event had been shorter).
On the positive side, I did enjoy the build-up to the event. The whales and the story were intriguing. And ArenaNet fixed the bugged scavenger hunt mission quickly enough. It's too bad that the final event left such a bad taste in my mouth.
I am glad that I'm not one of the unfortunate people who had to suffer through this event without even getting any reward. I hope ArenaNet will take steps to do something about that.
Overall, this was a disappointment. I really feel bad for people who were invited by friends if this was their first weekend playing GW2 and they experienced this thing.

Then again, I skipped all the one-time things and just played the update...
