If I was on a subscription based game I would pay for the time I was away on other games, not only that but I would over time pay a considerabe ammount of money which would all be lost if I stopped.

The point is anet gives everyone a choice.
GW1 was very low key about selling stuff to players and it didnt come in right away.
GW2 is much more in your face about selling stuff and they appear to be quite cynical about some of their choices.

Like I said, you do "pay" in GW2, one way or another.  You either do the gear grind and pay with your time, or you pay with real money without the grind.

Ah! so you feel you need something, but you really don't need them.

I need it if I want to party with people, but don't need them if I am solo.  Since I have been solo 99.99% of the time in this game, I would enjoy a change.

Pugs are picky nowadays, what can I say.

You can spend cash to buy exotics and become less of a crutch to your teammates when you're learning new content, and turn any statistical progression into a skin grind. That's pretty big, really.

Not really..most people tend to buy games that they want to be playing!!!Shocking, isnt it?
That means that if you buy it and want to be playing it then you will have no hard time to get a set of exotics pretty easily. That was the case so far.Now if you want to be handed everything cause some rich idiot might spend a fortune on gems to buy a virtual set of gear that you can get by grinding for 2 days to a week top yourself then i dont know what i could tell you to change your mind.
Theres a great way to think about it.
You can pay x amount of real life money or y amount of in game gold.As long as the vast majority find it easier to "farm" y than x then everything is fine.Actually with the previous gems to gold conversion ratio it would be pretty stupid to pay money for gold.

So assuming a MMO subscription of $11/month (like WoW), you have paid for almost 2 years of subscription within 3 months already.

subscription only assures you that you have access to the game.  and if you pay subscription to still grind everything, that's bad.

60$ assured me that i can play the game as long as the servers are up. and the other 260$ are just for the perks/donations/tips/e-vice (yes i used to smoke 1 pack per 3 days and cigarrettes now are 14 pack in NYC). i got gold, saved me time and i dodge from a potential ban (if i buy from illicit gold sellers which rates are a no brainer) and bought exotics thinking that they'll be maxed...

until they introduced gear progression.

but no regrets. but if they offer a way to get a gem refund, then good.

Still a choice and not required.  You are not being forced to buy stuff from the store, or gems to turn to gold to play the game.  My guild and friends do not require me or anybody else to have certain armor to join a group.  If you are grouping with people that require those things then find new people to group with.  Otherwise it is your choice and your choice only.

Not really so.  I completed the game and yet I don't have any max stat items, so what do I do now?  If I dont get them, pugs would complain and wont let me with them in the new dungeon.  If I do get them, I would need more gold than I have now.  OR I can grind for tokens in dungeons and WvW (which I dislike).  I don't call going over the same content many times as playing the game, I call that grind.

you could jsut finish a highlevel zone and get an extic like that, as well as find a group that doesn't hold idiots. I've never had to ping my gear even once. Don't act like its a requierment and you can't get around it, coze its not. The ppl you talk about are far in the minority

It is still required as long as the pug requires it.  Otherwise you can't play with them or you can try to solo FOTM.  Or go from pug to pug and find one that wouldn't mind you wearing masterwork-only items.

In any case, nobody enjoys being kicked from a group or be deemed unworthy for whatever reasons.

I have completed the game and all 3 Orr regions with just masterwork gear.  If I want to pug, then I have to follow the rules as laid out by the pug or risk a kick.

omg...
you completed the game you paid 60 for. you may or may not have enjoyed it. but you COMPLETED an incredible amount of content. therefore, you can choose: be less judgmental than the l33t people and keep playing as you like, bounce in for new content once in awhile, or QUIT.

where does it say that when you pay for a video game that gives you WAYYYYY more than the financial equivalent of 7 theatre-movies or one dress... you deserve more? i heard there's a new shooter game out with lots of blood and stuff. or read a book. from the library, of course, since that's free. wait... would re-reading a book be "grind"?

You don't ahve to follow anyhting

like i said above (edited it) those ppl are far in the minority, i have yet to be asked to ping my gear and guess what i fought in orr with blue's as armor , and slowly worked my way towards more highlvl gear. Don't be such a pushover

I don't even have full exotic gear yet at this point, i have no issues (once again) finding a team for fractals or for dungeons and i play A LOT with pugs. When a jerk comes around, kick them or leave them with their idiocy.

Oh I never said that I didn't get my money's worth.  I am saying the system in this game is setup so that you feel pressured to grind or pay for max stat items if you dont want to risk being kicked from a pug.

Tell that to this guy's pug: http://www.guildwars...t/#entry2084476

With tougher content, pugs are getting more discriminatory.  I dont think anyone here likes to be thought of as holding any group back, regardless of whether you admit it or not, there IS a pressure for getting max stat equipment when partying with others.

i guess the virtual world has the same "keeping up with the joneses" issue that the 'burbs have. there are people who see the people around them wearing Xdesigner and start to stress and worry and freak (or worse, just go buy it on credit) because they do not have Xdesigner and thus are Not Cool. And the kids wearing Xdesigner sneer and flounce at the kids who don't wear their Coolness (thus reinforcing how cool they are). The game sets this up with the tiers of rarity that people transfer into Coolness. (i have to admit, the bow that shoots rainbows is awfully fun--but i'm not going to get crazy trying to earn it.)

I think dss_live and i are saying the same thing: don't get sucked into that treadmill. it's meaningless. the game has offered people the tiers, true. but you do NOT need these things to play the game and have fun. Try to find the fun again, and leave the "max stat" people to themselves. Go ahead and play with me. At level 80, I don't even know what a "max stat" item is.

I have often thought those ugg boots look cozy... but I still haven't shelled out that kind of money for a winter boot I can't wear in the snow... and have no desire to wear in the summer. besides i hear they come out with a new style every season making the old ones "uncool."

I wouldn't have cared with "keeping with the jones" in terms of cosmetic fashion.  I used collector's equipment (lowest-end, easy to acquire, max stat items) for years for those who are familiar with GW1.

But if the party experience a wipe and someone hints about your lower quality equipment, how would you feel?  Furthermore, regardless of whether a pug is justified to kick you based on your equipment or not, you still do not want to be considered "inferior" just because of your equipment which are, mathematically speaking, really inferior to an exotic.

60$ box purchase to open the front door on Oct. 2.
20$ gem card (2000 gems) from a retailer, (for more bank storage.)

I was intending to buy one or 2 gem cards per month going forward, but the game has changed & now my wallet is closed.

The last press beta in March of 2012 got me paying attention, to a game I had previously ignored.  Anyway, I am now back at square one.  I don't plan on purchasing the next expansion, or any more gems.  I certainly don't need to be a freeloader, the gem cards are only 20 dollars afterall... but for the foreseeable future, a freeloader is me.

Conduct your little litmus test swiftly Arenanet.  I would be quite surprised if this didn't turn out to be a critical misstep, with all the associated monetary hemorrhaging.

80$ for the game, and about 40$ in gems from the past 2 months for bank/bag slots,
Like some of the people posted I was going to support the game by putting in a few $ every month or so, but looking at the game's state now...its really getting frustrating to continue.

More than that. I lost track past $300. It's on my CC statements. And yes, I'm done spending.

My son thanked me for funding the next expansion.

2 accounts and a lot of character slots. I usually pick up 3-4 accounts per game.

I've spent twice what I planned. Issues at release with the gem store caused more character slots initially than I wanted. In the end, I'd probably have spent it anyways.

Overall, that's about 2 dinners worth at a decently nice restaurant for the whole family when my mother-in-law is visiting.

I've gotten my money's worth.

I feel so sorry for you. Now i know why this store scam keeps going and growing expecially during every events. Guess, i have the same, with ingame gold converted. If virtual goods (something you can have for free playing a bit smartly) for a game sinking day by day (looking dev's attitude to ignore community interests) well, i doubt you funded any expansion at all :P

Whenever you put something up on TP, you pay a small percentage of the price. This is to keep people from using TP as additional bank space of sorts
