So I find shadowstep to be a portal just not as good, any thoughts on this? Why is it made like this?

Mesmer portals are meant to be a more tactical movement system, for team usage. Where Thieves have multiple forms of fast acting shadowsteps for the sole purpose of quick mobility. Their functions and formalities just aren't the same.

Thieves are split characters that can zip around quickly on the battlefield to quickly take out primary targets (as if they existed in GW2). Mesmers are like the Trahernes of WvW with their Portal placement being able to beam whole armies into battle.

Shadowstep offers much needed condition removal, an often overlooked mechanic of the skill. This, combined with its tactical ping pong around the room ability makes it a highly useful skill. I run it often, however it benefits only myself, as is intended.
Portal is simply amazing, and has been very useful to my guild in FotM runs. Someone falls off a cliff? We can retrieve you. On hammer fractal? Run with two Mesmers, drop a portal on each side, and blink the party back and forth to finish that portion of the dungeon in record time. Great in WvW and in Dungeons.
