...Or, does the average gamer really froth at the mouth for multiple tiers of mystery chests?

Controversial *attention grabbing header* I know, but Crystin Cox single contribution to the Gem Store seems to be the lottery of mystery chests.

Why put a decent item for direct purchase, when you can stick that in a mystery chest lottery?  Is there really THAT many suckers to make it lucrative?  The saying goes something like, "One born every minute..."

Anyway, this is me shining a light on something I truly hope gamers have been exposed to long enough, that we are wise to the gimmick... or perhaps I hope in vane...

So have you purchased Mystery chests?  Do you like the mystery chest lottery?  Would you rather just have a direct purchase to an item you desired? etc.

Discuss...

*full discloser: I have never, nor will I ever purchase this stupid gimmick, that is a blight to any cash shop system!  Pity Crystin Cox, Nexon connection may give her immunity to the pink slip!*

No, I didn't buy a mystery chest.  I don't like the lottery.  I'd have bought any costume or armour skin (if I liked it, haven't even looked at the ones offered from those chests) if it had been on offer on the gem store.  I wouldn't even buy a black lion key.  Had there been a guaranteed drop from the chest that was unique (like, for instance, you'd get at least 1 mini and one other item out of this list), I might have gotten at least one.  I just don't like to pay for something that I might not even get...

I'm sick of it.

Why not just put skins on the cash shop directly + the chests.

Anet are missing out on using the cash shop to bolster their profits. Look at league of legends. Give people skins they can apply to their COMBAT gear and I bet they will start making a killing. More options = Happier players = More profit.

I really wish some of the costumes etc, especially the top hat, was available over your existing armour rather than being town clothing tbh.

And I agree the skins should be sold in the gemstore instead of selling them in this lottery kind of crap. I have completely stopped gem purchases because I don't want to take a part in this lottery things, and also cause I feel they don't deserve the money anymore(but that's another topic). I wish I could just purchase the skins instead. That would be great.

And yeah, like people are saying, she's really good at what she does. She knew that putting in a lottery would generate more cash that selling the skins alone. She knows how to make the players spend money, sadly it leaves lots of us feeling kinda bad afterwards when we realize :P

Yes and there is a lot of crap in it. Mystery chests is just one item in the vast array of digital diarrhea that they stock.

Funny thing is, they already did in GW1.

Cash store purchases are completely optional.  It'd be nice if any of it was worth buying sure (besides extra slots for stuff or characters) but it is no skin off my nose that it is nothing I want.

In other words the whole issue is irrelevant.

I don't play the lottery, I'm not playing it with their gem store.
If I spend real $, I'd want to know I'll get something.

The store doesn't really have anything that interests me other than character slots and bank slots. I'll buy those if needed.

If they added armor/weapon skins for purchase (not in chests; like krytan and profane currently are), I'd buy them if there was one I really liked. But chests? There's zero chance i'll buy chests. Especially since all they contain are boosts, minis and town clothes (that you never see). So that's a "not interested" on two separate levels there.

hmm...are you talking about consortium chests?  i bought some, but i haven't spent any RL money in the cash shop...
i got skins (they are guaranteed, you know) and stacks of crafting supplies...didn't get a rare mini, but that's the thing with rare minis...they are rather, well, rare

i have to say i am quite pleased with my armor skins, but to each their own

After the hassle with the halloween ones i just decided to let other people play the lottery and i'll buy the items i want off the TP. The cost in real money for these chests that have a chance to give you a skin you don't want if you even get one at all is way too much.

They should just sell the skins outright.

You're mixing up what you want with whether or not it makes money. While it would be nice to be able to purchase the items directly, there's a proven history this lottery method makes more money. If everyone could get the skin consistently, then there would be no rarity with them without making them pretty expensive. At that point, people won't buy them because they're too expensive. If they're cheap, no one will want them because everybody will have them. Making it lottery driven allows them to be possibly inexpensive in theory, while still being rare.

And you forget - she's probably the one responsible for changing dyes from account based to character based. Prepare for froth level 2!

I don't even open BL chests any more.  Their crap just takes up bank space.
I have a stack of probably 6-8 keys and easily 50 chests.

Crystin Cox turned me into a newt!!.....

.............. I got better..

Seriously, don't buy into the crap. Horde your gems if you have them. They likely run daily and weekly sales numbers and chuckle at how many schmuck gamers bought them and got the same crap I got derping around on the lost shore. We are our own worst enemy. Stop buying the shit and they will at least see that hmm, we need to do something else.

I got my fill of mystery box lottery in other games (iRO's monthly/holiday boxes to be exact)...

These have been just terrible imo.  Halloween  = majority of the same stuff you would always get out of the chest with low chance of new skins.  These Consortium chests while have very small loot pool to pull from and cuts out the excess crap, its still random, and I don't like that.  I'd gladly toss gems at definitive skins or mini pets, not to play the RNG.

People piss thousands of dollars on mystery boxes - if you look at a nexon game like atlantica boxes were 10 dollars a piece and you would regularly have people posting on the forums about how they spent 300-3000 dollars on these boxes and did not get a mount from one of the boxes. And guess what? The next new box that came out a week later had the same idiots buying them trying to get the newest mount.

Every game that either sells mystery chests or drops mystery chests then sells keys to open them has made tons of money doing it.  This spans facebook games like Farmille and Sims to full fledged MMOs like Star Trek Online and Perfectworld.  So yes, basically the human race IS a horde of fools and we are all doomed.

I know nearly all the people in the guild haven't purchased any gems with real money as of yet because there's only a 'chance' you get the item you want.

When i spend my money on something i want to be sure of what i'm getting. But hey, it seems like enough people fall for it for them to keep this up.

I think whoever came up with the current Ascended gear grind is very competent, actually.  It preys on the same tendencies that have caused me to spend more silver on mats off the TP than I wanted to in order to further my crafting.

Here you sit with everything you need to create a piece of Ascended gear that you can get from running dungeons.  But oh no, look!  You need more mats.  But hey, these mats are available on the TP.  But you don't have enough gold to purchase them.  So what do you do?  Just this once?  Do you go out and grind them for 20 hours and delay your shiny new piece of gear?  Maybe.  But maybe you buy gems, exchange them for gold, and finish your armor piece instead.

So who came up with this?  Was it her, or someone else?  Because I'd like to congratulate that person while staying far away from any project they are ever involved in ever again.
