...until I looked closer at the mat cost. Potent bloods are almost 25 silver each and I need 250 of them. And that's before even counting the ectos.
Now, to give you some background, I don't get a ton of playtime. Between my family and my job, I don't get to put in nearly as many hours as I was able to do back in my college years, but that's why I came to GW2. I played GW1 back in the day and I was really looking forward to a game where I can jump in and be judged by how well I played, not how long I played.
After hearing ArenaNet's manifesto on the game, I thought that's what I would find.
And it was.
Until this latest patch.
I know to a lot of other people, this mat cost is nothing, but it's sad that it feels like I can't play MMOs and still be competitive anymore.

That is ArenaNet's new business model.
You may not give in, but others will. No effort lost on their part.

Karma Temple Set is doable now with the daily karma jug and dungeon vial of karma.
Tokens easier to gain off boss kills with the current state of 'geared people' at the moment.
And that's that.
Don't even think of:
1. Legendary weapons.
2. Ascended Gear.
These things aren't meant to be casual friendly.
Trust me, after playing for a month and surveying the market + playstyle, it's just not feasible nor felt like an accomplishment when you spent real life currency on a virtual item upgrade. I could just download a Skyrim mod and get a really cool looking sword and other stuff for free. Spend what you can on dyes, dress up your character, be happy about it but never overspend.
Do Fractals for the experience - explore them all...then don't come back - is what I do.
That's where the fun is for me.

I read that a lot. "Everyone's so far ahead!" A LOT of people say that. This is GW1 Hall of Heroes all over again. Thousands of complaints that "Nobody takes people below a certain rank." Yet not once have I ever seen those like-minded people say "Well we should all group up together then and get that rank."
You are not the only one at level 1. This is ESPECIALLY true as it's character bound and not account bound. Hell, you're not even the only one willing to do level 1 even on higher levels considering how fast the Fractal runs are. Get in the game, start looking and play the game the way you enjoy it.

1. It hasn't even been a week and people are advertising from 1-12 from what I've seen on my own server and overflows. It is also a touch more difficult to get past the lower levels because people are not familiar with the maps yet (Get swamp? Quit and re-try without voice comm) so wipes and rage quits come faster. It's going to be difficult to find a PuG for this very quickly. If it's not meant to be PuG friendly then the November 15th update was a whole lot of terrible.
2. The ascended item drops are account bound, not character bound. The difficulty levels earned may be character bound but I would never willingly limit my group options by jumping on another character when I could get so much more playing whichever of my characters has access to the higher levels. This is especially true since the ascended items come level 10+ are going to become more of a necessity; I'm not about to blow 500 T6 materials and 100 ectos just so I can have two characters who can perform on equal footing.
Ascended items, in their words, were supposed to be something to work on after exotics but before Legendaries. See, I find that kind of funny since when I look at the recipes for making those back items they require 250 of a T6 material (needed for Legendary), skill points (needed for Legendary), and ectos (oh look, needed for Legendary). How am I supposed to work on my Legendary when my ascended gear is consuming the materials I also need for my Legendary? Also, the whole fact that an exotic piece will cost a gold piece if you're not picky about the skin but ascended items? Probably 20+ gold, in that range? Anet that's not another step, that's a gargantuan leap.

You were never competitive bro.
I'm still in exotics, I don't have a legendary, but you know what? I don't care. Because I don't need those.

As for competitive stuff, keep in mind that the people you are competing against are fat people who have nothing good in their life except drooling away in tyria farming their T6 crap everyday just like those nexon fanboys. I rather have a life.
Moral of the story: If you want the best items(appearance or stat) then earn it. But if you find that in the process you disliked it, it is not for you. Besides, i am in exotics and i am having fun. Descension stuff are just for no-lifers. As for Anet's manifesto. What manifesto, oh you mean, their 'lies'? Well i do hear about them but one must not trust a sly fox(get it?)

The manifesto still stands. 99% of the game is doable with rare gear.
The fractal dungeon is the only area where better gear might be mandatory.
If you don't want to grind, just don't do it.
It is totally fine for Arenanet to say: if you want to grind: here's some cool armor that you don't actually need but has better stats and looks great.

Pretty much this. More players are getting in reach of items that are steep on the acquisition list. The Legendary was a given, but now if you look at higher end Mystic forge weapons that need 250 orichalcum blades and ascended back items that are 250 high end mats and 50 ectos you are simply going to see this list grow.
The problem is the narrow focus on how all these high end items use all the same materials. They need to broaden the end game materials list so people can work on multiple items at once instead of one or the other.

Well, if you are desperate to play with people that will kick you because they don't like the gear you are wearing, then this tells me more about you than about the existence of grinding in GW2

Ascended is only useful in the fractals dungeon and that can be played at different levels agony can be blocked dodged so whats the worry.
Play the game as you were doing and use money for the resources to get more ascended items when they come out.
Farm for the ascended resources which are sure to be good sellers over time, maybe get crafting skills up so if the recipy comes out you can make your own.
When they said top lvl was 80 md they said it was too high I said its all about how long it takes me to get to top lvl a week too short 6 months too high well it took me almost 3 months which I am happy with.
8 character classes gives me 2 years of play maybe.
Eventually I will have legendary weapons armour and ascended too if they all come into the game.
Not this week not this year but I will have a load of fun, just don't see MMOs as a sprint,

Look players who do that are *es and I am not so desperate to do a dungeon that I would join them anyway.
If I met a group in real life who said unless I drove a particular car or had £2000 to spend on an eveninng out I should get lost, well I would think the same of them too.
Some players will always find a reason to judge players if this equipment didn't exist they would take the rarest material that drops in the game and say show me 500 of them or get lost.
Casual players will always be treated thus by them.
So what is a casual player to do, well you could get together with other regected players and do it yourself till you get good at it and probably turn into the same type of jackass as them.
The most successful players in these games will always be those that find a friendly guild or have friends.
noobs of the game unite you have nothing to lose but your noobyness.
ok its a crap slogan but do it anyway.
love it I was going to say the words thats your rear end and a hole but instead typed Jack ... rear end and they filtered it.
They could have changed it to Jack*es instead of just *s.
I shall have to reduce my expletives down another lvl I thought I was ok with the jack word.
I shall in future say naughty persons
