Alchemist sounds too much like a healer. And also too restrictive, an alchemist doesn't shoot guns nor does he build turrets. I see where you're going with this, but I don't see what else he could be called.

What what what?
In fantasy books, alchemists almost never heal, they do use guns, build all sorts of mech devices that shoot their potions, create vials and elixirs, etc.
Engineers were usually focused on creating siege weapons and battlefield devices, but didn't use potions or elixirs.
Also, the first to discover and use gunpowder in real life were chinese alchemists who wanted to crease elixirs of immortality and ended up making the first firearms and grenades.

Those stats are ridiculously old. Pretty sure those were given the first week of launch.

i see a lot of mesmers in game.  i got the game two months after release and they are definitely more common than you are giving them credit for. . .

Engineer is least played class by far, and no surprise there class needs major overhaul since it`s so underpowered !

Engineer.
Lets be honest, most people just care about one thing and one thing only, damage.
And the warrior has pretty much everyone beat in terms of littlest amount of effort required to perform max damage.
So naturally warrior is going to be the one most people flock too.
100%.

Even me, who never played warrior as main. If I do dungeons with pugs, you see a lot of warriors, it happens more often than not that's there's at least 2 or 3 in the team.
And understandably; not only are they the prototype of a class a lot of people feel attracted to, they also do massive damage, level very easily and have a very decent defense. Things you can't say about every class.

Mesmer and Engineer, though I would like to see ArenaNet release more up to date statistics.

I would say Engineer also, I see a lot of people saying Mesmer. But I honestly see tons of mesmer's running around in non pvp settings.

Engineer was my first 80, but it just feels so weak compared to everything else I have tried. Was a blast lvling up though, but tossing grenades gets old fast. It really feels like a class that would do A LOT of damage with all the explosions and flamethrower! but sadly I think people quickly find out that's not true.

I'd say engi. I've pretty much forgotten they're even in the game.

Although according to Anet mesmer is the least played, I'm still totally aware of their presence since they were in GW1 and you see them all the time in PvP.

I would say engineers. I created one and played him up to level 20. The leveling speed was somewhat faster than the mesmer I am currently playing (only level 30). But I got bored of being able to equip one weapon set and ground target spamming with grenades.

Playing mesmer is much more fun although spamming grenades is much more effective than clone shattering.

Engineer, definitely. I see very few level 80 engineers. I see quite a lot of mesmers actually. More than the other two light armor classes it seems.

Necro.

I play both Engineer & Mesmer in WvW and I see mostly guardians, warriors & thieves followed by rangers, mesmers & eles.
The least played class is necro (or at least i don't meet them a lot).

Can't excactly tell what % engineers I meet, but it's definitely more than necros.

In low level areas it's the Engineer. In high level areas it's the Necromancer. In medium level areas... well, hard to make out in those :P

Mesmers aren't around a lot either, but because of the flashy skills you tend to take more notice of them. What do you notice the most: A small swing of the wand with a slight red effect (Necromancer) or quadruplets firing beams from swords twice as big as themself?

almost all the necros ive seen are level 80 on my server, never see them in the lower level areas myself

Weird. I see tons of people who are like "Oh, yay, necro," then try it out and end up thinking "necro sucks :(" and ditch it around level 30. I'm one of the odd ones out with a level 80 one on my server :P

80 Necro here too, thought there was almost too many of us leveling. Not so much at 80. See lots of Warrior, Mes, Warrior, Guardian, er Warrior, some Eles too. And uh Warrior... Engineers? Do they have those at 80? :)

(my comments are not so serious) I do enjoy my Warrior alt, they are like a guilty pleasure and can't really blame anyone who plays them. Love my Necromancer, even she secretly has Warrior envy at times.

It's those big and shiny swords!

And the powerful skills. Those too.

But mostly the swords!

I think the stats they released represent characters rolled which can be misleading as lots of people roll alts out of curiosity and then delete them.

A more meaningful measure would be to count classes that reach level 80.

In Orr (lvl 80) I  tend to see tons of Elementalists, and quite a few Mesmers, but very few Engineers, and even fewer Necros.
There seem to be plenty of Warriors, Guardians, Rangers and Thieves in Orr.

In terms of playing with them as team mates, I have seen some very well played Mesmers and Elementalists, but very few well played Engineers.

By well played I mean, they stood out in the team and were key to the teams success.

If u don't see the Engi's that's cuz they standing waaayy back at 1500 ft throwing grenades Lolz.
