It's the one who is laughing at you as you chase clones.

If you see him strafing, dodge rolling, etc. That's the real one. If he has an offhand weapon: that's the real one. If he has low health and disappears behind a rock or something and then suddenly starts running towards you: that' s a decoy

Real help?  The poster above me.  Clones are easy to spot once you know what to look for.  They won't react to combat like a player would.

Mr_Original's list has some good things to look for, but the better mesmers will try to act like their clones.

Also, remember that his clones don't have all of his buffs and conditions. If you target a mesmer and his status bar is empty, 9 times out of 10, it's not him.

I never asked myself that question, I just Flamethrower them all at once when I can.

Besides, look for signets or unusual boons on targets if you really can't detect the player through mobility analysis.

Be careful though: Illusions and phantoms may have fury. My philosphy is: tab until you see someone with

more than one boon
Signets
a title

I don't know about guilds, though. Don't remember if they are copied onto illusions or not.

Nevertheless, is always annoying when a mesmer with illusions and a necromancer with minions attack you on the Keep in the forest... and you have a hard time even realizing where YOU are, for how much the area is swarmed. Maybe is a new build: we don't attack your healthbar. We attack your pin. Lagcleave build.XD

If you waste time looking for the real mesmer trying to findo who is the real mesmer instead of just know who is the real mesmer when he shows up you're gonna have a bad time.

Make a mesmer and play with him. You'll know easily where the mesmer tend to spawn/teleport/position himself and eventually you'll learn how to target the real one.

yeah, better mesmers autoattack and do not dodge. but the best mesmers do nothing, no way to beat them.

The majority of time, when a mesmer uses a clone spawning skill, he results in the same spot. (with the exception of staff skill where he is sent backward) Also, the real mesmer auto-attacks more frequently than its clone counterparts. Mesmer clones also have much more jerky movements, turns are precise and sharp, while turns of players tend to be much smoother. Also, movement speed of real memser is distinctly slower. Of course, any decent mesmers will spawn clones much more smartly, and mix it up with stealthing and blinking. Moreover, the mesmer clone spawning downed skill always results in the real one popping up afterwards, NOT the first one. Even then, the downed arrow icon with the skull gives it away anyway.

In fact, I find fighting 1v1 against a mesmer actually easier, compared to fighting, say 3v3 when it's much harder to just keep track of the real mesmer throughout the battle. I think mesmers' component to deception shine more in larger encounters.

At the end of the day, like what tangoesp said, play a mesmer yourself. It's easily one of my favorites.

The Downed symbol won't appear over Mesmer clones.

The map completion star won't appear over Mesmer clones.

Mesmer clones will turn oddly by perfectly tracking your movement, since they're effectively "locked onto" you. If you move back and forth a bit, a real Mesmer will not perfectly track your movement.

Mesmer clones will behave very passively, will never run away, will never move if you're in range (or if Shattering), will never change direction away from you, and will never use anything other than auto-attack.

Mesmer clones will take way more damage from attacks.

Mesmer clones will not keep a full cycle of autoattack going and there will be extremely noticeable pauses inbetween when they attack.

Mesmer clones will, from what I recall, not show the backslot of their character.

Mesmer clones won't copy the HP of the Mesmer himself so checking their HP (seeing if it's too high/low) can also be a dead giveaway.

The real challenge is trying to pay attention to one of these warnings and parse it in the space of a few seconds, but continuing to try (and playing a Mesmer to around 30 yourself) will make it far easier.

And if in doubt, AoE.

The one who has the same healthpool as before he used his clones.

Or (if he healed), the one that is strafing / running away from you in any way.

The real one usually also attacks way faster.

In world vs world an up-leveled mesmer has the green arrow on this name while his clones don't.  That one's free.

The unusual one. Please CTRL+T the real one if you've identified a positive.

No matter what you managed to ID the mesmer with, his clones have already done their job.

Pretty much as mentioned, the one who acts like a real person. As a Mesmer myself I find it pretty easy to find the real one unless there are a couple others in the fight. The clones generally stand still and spam one attack, while the real one will be moving around, dodging, strafing, using other spells, etc.

All you need to do is look at their HP before they cast their clone. And you may also just AoE, that will usually kill the clones in one hit

I think the BIG problem is not about tell which mesmer is real.
For some professions, expecially the most complex ones, landing a high-damage combo is an elaborated issue. And yeah, I'm a noob, so it happens to me that mesmers just fade away in the middle of most attempts of dealing some important damage to them.

So either you can predict all their teleports, or you can become a bunker, and make sure they can't kill you during the time it takes you to kill them with autoattack. I'll try this idea, and see if works.

Most effective way to find the real Mesmer is one with the offhand weapon. Also watch their movements, dodging is a dead give away.

Just tab cycle until you find the one with multiple boons and a glory booster.

Well, fear not: mesmers cannot whipe you aout from the face of the earth in a split second anymore, from what I've seen.
