Also, remember that his clones don't have all of his buffs and conditions. If you target a mesmer and his status bar is empty, 9 times out of 10, it's not him.

Besides, look for signets or unusual boons on targets if you really can't detect the player through mobility analysis.

more than one boon
Signets
a title
I don't know about guilds, though. Don't remember if they are copied onto illusions or not.
Nevertheless, is always annoying when a mesmer with illusions and a necromancer with minions attack you on the Keep in the forest... and you have a hard time even realizing where YOU are, for how much the area is swarmed. Maybe is a new build: we don't attack your healthbar. We attack your pin. Lagcleave build.XD

Make a mesmer and play with him. You'll know easily where the mesmer tend to spawn/teleport/position himself and eventually you'll learn how to target the real one.

In fact, I find fighting 1v1 against a mesmer actually easier, compared to fighting, say 3v3 when it's much harder to just keep track of the real mesmer throughout the battle. I think mesmers' component to deception shine more in larger encounters.
At the end of the day, like what tangoesp said, play a mesmer yourself. It's easily one of my favorites.

The map completion star won't appear over Mesmer clones.
Mesmer clones will turn oddly by perfectly tracking your movement, since they're effectively "locked onto" you. If you move back and forth a bit, a real Mesmer will not perfectly track your movement.
Mesmer clones will behave very passively, will never run away, will never move if you're in range (or if Shattering), will never change direction away from you, and will never use anything other than auto-attack.
Mesmer clones will take way more damage from attacks.
Mesmer clones will not keep a full cycle of autoattack going and there will be extremely noticeable pauses inbetween when they attack.
Mesmer clones will, from what I recall, not show the backslot of their character.
Mesmer clones won't copy the HP of the Mesmer himself so checking their HP (seeing if it's too high/low) can also be a dead giveaway.
The real challenge is trying to pay attention to one of these warnings and parse it in the space of a few seconds, but continuing to try (and playing a Mesmer to around 30 yourself) will make it far easier.
And if in doubt, AoE.

Or (if he healed), the one that is strafing / running away from you in any way.
The real one usually also attacks way faster.

For some professions, expecially the most complex ones, landing a high-damage combo is an elaborated issue. And yeah, I'm a noob, so it happens to me that mesmers just fade away in the middle of most attempts of dealing some important damage to them.
So either you can predict all their teleports, or you can become a bunker, and make sure they can't kill you during the time it takes you to kill them with autoattack. I'll try this idea, and see if works.
