I'm tired of looking at my armor that's been about the same since level 40?... Unless I missed something I haven't seen anyone say you can mix-match items. Can you mix some karma items with dungeon items/crafted items? I only have about 4 gold at the moment but about 50k karma and some jugs saved up with a booster ready. Should I but the tier 3 karma staff from the NPC in divinity's reach? I saw the guide above but it's got a lot of info but that's only if you know what you should be shooing for.

For starters welcome to 80.  Go buy a full set of level 80 Rares (people used to say level 78 exotics) but rares go for so little now they are the way to start gearing.  Hold onto your karma and use it to mix and match Cursed Shore vendor exotics (80) that run about 42k karma each.  This is the best way to gear up from the 80 rares.  Also go with 80 rare weapons to start out with and buy either dungeon weapons (for skins and such) or buy the exotics off the TP eventually for 2 goldish each as you make more money later on.

Buy rares (green accessories will do fine). Shouldnt set you back much in terms of coin. Then its just to start farming Orr events and mobs. Of course do dungeons as well.

Dont buy the karma stuff yet. You dont really need it. Its far more cost effective to get dungeon gear, simply because of the loot you get while doing a dungeon. Run low tier explorables such as AC for easy coins, or start farming CoF in quick runs.

the 42k karma armor can be good if you want a power/tough/vit stat.

Save the karma unless you can't get a stat set from other gear in PvE, I bought karma Pwr/Tuf/Vit for my Guard for instance, but you can do AC for that gear, I just choose not to do that.

78 exotics usually have better stats than 80 rares, but they tend to cost more.

Don't buy Superior runes unless they are cheap enough, most of the good Superiors are gonna be out of your price range anyways, 3-6g or more.  For instance if you were Pwr/Tough/Vit - 4 Major Dolyaks and 2 Major Soldier or Fighter would suffice til later.

Thanks. I currently have all 80 greens. When you grind the cursed shores are you selling stuff or salvaging stuff? What a good rule for this? Otherwise all i seem to get drops of are the gray trash skull things lol

Outside of gear...

Do zone completion on frostgorge, malchors and cursed (76/78 exotics that could be useful or sold and T6 mats towards crafting).

I usually do completion on straights, maelstrom and fireheart too for the lvl 70+ exotics to either sell or break for ectos (if you haven't already completed - I usually don't because leveling is so freaking fast near the end if you're keeping up with story).

Compare vendor prices vs TP prices for mats vs your crafting needs when considering salvage.

The first thing you do after hitting level 80? Get better "gear"!!!!! Either buy or craft your exotic armor, weapons and jewelery as soon as possible.

And when you're done with that? Go and get a 2nd set of gear with different stats, because you've gotten bored with your current build or you've figured out that you need a different build for dungeons, etc.....

And when you're done with that? ANet will nerf something or add new content with new items, etc...... so go get a 3rd set of "stuff"........

If you salvage with a basic salvage kit, you have a chance of getting T6 crafting materials like Orichalcum Ore or Gossamer Scraps, depending on the item.  I usually salvage my whites and blues since they don't sell for much to the vendors and they are hardly worth anything in the TP.  I vendor my greens.  You can check the TP first before vendoring but these are usually not worth much in the TP too.  I salvage my rares (with req lvl >= 68) with mystic/black lion/master salvage kit for the chance of getting globs of ectoplasm.

awesome info - thanks - now i just need more time to play - while i'm asking, what's you opinion on crafting? i got artiface and jewel crafting as a mesmer. should i just stick with those 2 or get them all?

Crafting is a big gold sink for the most part and about 99% of the crafted items are worth less than the ingredients that you used to craft them.  However, most of the craft-profitable items are in the higher tier and the harder it is to craft something, the more likely for them to have a higher value.

Short answer is, I don't think crafting is necessary but crafting is very popular in this game because of the XP reward.  If you have trustworthy guild members/friends who are crafters, you can simply ask them to craft for you if you need to.  You can gain more gold by selling your crafting ingredients than to use them to level up your crafting.  At lower levels, you can get almost anything for cheap in the TP that are dumped by crafters.

yea i looked that over^ - it's a bit much for someone who just hit 80. i was asking here for more of a where to start. that's more like a buffet of info to just dig in. i guess i'll finish my story then do dailies to get some mroe karma, and farm cursed shores for now. do some dungeons when i can

I salvage cloth, some metal, and rares of 74 or greater(using a master kit or equivalent).  I vender/tp everything else.  

As for what I did at 80, I bought rare mf gear(with 5 superior pirate runes and 1 major pirate rune) and green mf jewelry and did the events in cursed short for awhile until I could make my exotic gear/jewelry.

Something else to consider: if your server has particularly active WvW guilds, doing WvW during prime-time is actually not a bad way to make some money on the side. It's not as efficient as running dungeons, but it could be fun and a great way for you to meet new people.
