I think that one of the problems is that items are not connected to deeds. They simply show that you played the auction house well, you were lucky or that you were "in early" before the prices of X were corrected for us slowbies.
Back in warcraft, in the early days, PVP Grand Marshall gear and titles were eyecatching *and* they meant something. Even later when you could earn them more easily, they *still* had meaning. If someone was rocking pvp gear or specialist dungeon gear, it was beyond argument that they were good at that field of play. Or, at least that they spent a serious amount of time in that playstyle, still a worthy statement.
I do WvW and the only thing i can earn there that looks good is a blue tag over my head....and i dont even earn that through deeds either, its through having 100 gold. Thats a tragedy and yet, its something i aspire to because i often take a command role.
This game is about making money and that is the only achievement we can show off to our fellow players.
