This seems to be debated more and more as the next gen xbox and playstation get closer to release and from what I can tell, the divide between opinions is pretty strong. Just by googling this question, hundreds of articles pop up and I find some of them hard to believe. Some say the future is innovation (or gimmicks depending on your point of view) like the Wii U with unique and new controllers/systems. Personally, I agree with the other half who just want more powerful consoles with the basically the same controllers that have proven to be tried and true for so many years. I want backwards compatibility, massive internal + cloud storage, bluray, ownership of games I buy, and on and on....

Some even go so far as to say consoles will become extinct and the new upcoming consoles will be the last of a dying breed. Personally, I think that is a load of BS and consoles are here to stay for many more years. Just look at black friday and microsoft selling 750k consoles in the US in a 5 day span and the Wii, Wii U, and PS3 all selling pretty well too. Some think consoles will become cloud only with no hardware at all, but I think there is something to be said about owning your own physical console and not having to deal with DRM and other stuff if you can avoid it which is getting rare these days.

I know the Wii U has sold pretty well, but honestly I can't understand why. The standard version has 8GB of storage half of which is dedicated to the OS?! Specs on par with current gen consoles, a controller with a tiny battery life and is a pain to hold for long periods, slow load times, USB 2.0, no DVD or bluray player(I think?), etc.... I know it's not for everyone, but I guess I don't understand why so many people bought into it. I guess if it's still fun, all the other shortcomings don't really matter?

I will be putting all my hope into mostly the PS4 just wondering what everyone else wants in the next console.

Well considering that the first generation of Xbox 360's were a complete were a complete disaster I won't be buying for a couple of years at least. My first 360 burned up and out of ten people I know maybe two who didn't have to replace their console. Microsoft won't be getting anymore big money from me until they can prove that they are capable of making a lasting product. That being said, all I want is better graphics, backwards compatability and a blu-ray player.

I just want consoles to push the limits of graphics capabilities, allow for ultra smooth game play, continue to push the ability to act as a foundation for larger, persistent worlds, etc. The basics really.

As you said, all these gimmicks mean nothing to me. I don't want to move around and feel as though I'm "interacting" with my television. I play video games to hold onto a controller, sit on my ass and pretend I'm awesome. If I want to feel "immersed" I will go outside and participate in reality...

I couldn't give a rat's patooty. The last console I ever used was the Super Ninetendo - not counting the Wii I've toyed with at my daughter's place. :D

I want
-Backwards combatibility . DEFINETLY. Because me and a lot of other people will have to sell their previous console to get money to buy the new one, and it would suck if i couldnt play my xbox 360 games on the 720.
-bluray player would be nice
-huge hdd
-extremley improved graphics
-very smooth

For the gen after next gen,(because i doubt this will happen in next gen).
-VIRTUAL REALITY!!

more time to play it lol. but it has to be backward compatible. the next elder scrolls game :)

PC games merging with console games as far as online MMO, FPS etc... I don't care if PCs have keyboards and more blah blah blah, sometimes you want to see on a couch watching a 40-60+ inch TV vs hunched over a desk looking at a 26 inch (if you're lucky) like i do all day at work.

Backwards compability is the only thing I really want and somehow I doubt it will be there.

Other things like stronger CPU & GPU, better graphics,... are all fairly obvious so I don't really have anything to say about that.

This is a much more technical based question, so it should be here honestly.  Also, Tech forums need more "cool" threads.  lol

Honestly, I'm rather unimpressed with the supposed hardware on the next generation consoles.   They are pretty damn anemic, and it's going to make that game innovation rift even bigger over the 5-6 years after their release.

I honestly think they should up the hardware to at LEAST Kepler or GCN upper tier hardware.

Personally, I think they should wait for Maxwell and just throw a Maxwell until into it and call it a day.  We'd be set for the next 7+ years.

They asked what I want, that's what I would want. I mean, obviously a little unrealistic, at least right now, but I would definitely convert to a console for a majority of my games if there was a large modding community.

I'd like to see more cross-platform support. That is, games that would be exclusive to Xbox or Playstation also coming to PC. Because let's be honest here, PC Master Race.

I should also add that the next gen consoles really need to support 4K resolutions (and getting at least 45fps doing so), as they will be entering into that new market segment which is going to develop rapidly in the next 5-6 years, the exact time the consoles will be really being used.

Yea I think higher resolutions are a must. I'm not too worried about what will be in the next PS and xbox though because I think they may change the specs as technology improves. I mean, I don't think we can believe what a few leaks are telling us until the companies themselves come out and say what exactly will be in them.

New article suggesting the xbox 720 will release 2 versions 2013 holiday season: one as a new console and the other as a casual device.
http://www.bloomberg...day-season.html

Also sony patented a new hybrid controller that separates into a motion controller.

Neither of these announcements makes me more excited about the new consoles. I don't want casual motion games to be the focus of the new consoles and I don't want sony/msft to feel like they have to adapt to nintendo. Personally, I hated the wii and I can't help but feel that sony/msft has made numerous decisions in the past and present due to nintendo's "innovation/gimmicks." I don't understand the need for movement/motion games at all. Unless you have kids or aren't a "serious" gamer how are motion games appealing at all? I don't want faulty hardware due to new "innovations" in controllers/consoles. I just  want them to make basically the same consoles except way more powerful with things like higher res, usb 3.0, etc...

What I would like most is more options and freedom.
What i mean by that, is things like map creators, choosing your controller (Not like choose this hand held controller or that one, no, really have lots of different options. Almost like custom controls. (In a framework of course, else things could get silly very fast :P ))

Have lots of games to choose from, being able to personalize those games to your liking. Kinda comparable, to how you would set up a server and create game with rules etc. in a FPS, but then to the max. Choosing how you want to play.

I know this would probably never happen because it's never going to be profitable. But it is, what I would want...

On a side note, maybe that's what the game industry really needs. Like those sjeiks that buy soccer clubs to try and make the best team possible. We should have some rich guy just spend all his money on a game (or console) Not to make a profit, but to just make the best game in history...
Alas...

All I want from next gen consoles is ...

NON-EXISTENCE

they dont need to be made.

Nintendo is going to take a financial beating with the WiiU.  They are already running into competition with DVRs, internet TV, tablets, smart-phones, chrome-books, etc., etc.  So many devices can or soon will play internet games on your TV already.  The era of the dedicated console is over.  They are being replaced by far more flexible systems that are able to be upgraded or replaced much faster than the 3-5 year console life-cycle.

The next gen consoles will be made, be absolutely useless in terms of the tech driving them (the next xbox is a pathetic ~6x faster than a 360!), console AAA gaming will stagnate even further. It'll become a bastion of mediocrity populated by dudebro shooters and sports games. Depressing but inevitable.

PC gaming will be the last bastion of high quality AAA games that do something different, crowdfunding will likely be the new way those AAA studios get their initial break instead of publishers.

What i would like from next gen consoles IF it was a perfect world and the consoles wouldn't be ran by investors and stockholders would for them to be as good as PC's. So i guess i just want a PC! :D

I don't believe that consoles will ever be useless unless people stop supporting them completely, which is unlikely for a long time. It's like having a second blu ray player in your living room when you already have a PC that has one. Not everyone does absolutely everything on their PC and wants to sit in one spot all the time. Sometimes people want to sit on their couch or be in the kitchen while watching a movie instead of sitting at their PC. And consoles do just that...they are another entertainment device that is more portable than a PC.

The other issue is all the great games made exclusively for consoles. There are so many great games that PC exclusive players will never experience(and vice versa) unless they buy a console. It's like missing out on an entire era of great gaming because you either can't afford a console or are too stubborn to buy one. The vast majority of sports games are just terrible on a PC and I don't really understand why developers can't make a decent PC sports game. Shooters on the other hand, I personally believe are way better on PC because it's obvious a mouse is more precise than a thumbstick and no amount of new thumbstick technology can beat a mouse imo.  Movement controls seem to favor consoles for a lot of games though because a thumbstick seems to often beat out the keyboard standard WASD for a lot of games. Although, some games like the AC series were pretty darn good on the keyboard which makes you wonder why other games have such terrible keyboard controls. Some games aren't even ports from consoles and were made for the PC, but they still have terrible PC controls.

If they made every great console game for the PC and made them equally as good or better I guess I wouldn't miss consoles much at all, but the fact is they don't and are very unlikely to for the foreseen future. Therefore consoles must exist and improve/grow. And this is really why I was hoping this thread would stay in the gamers forum and not tech because I figured there would be fewer biased opinions over there.

There hasn't actually been all that console exclusives recently to be honest. Too many studios going bankrupt and all that due to the poisonous console market. Especially AAA. There's been Halo 4 this year on xbox and ... nothing really. PS3 hasn't fared much better for exclusives. It's too difficult to develop for console now, since you need to spend 5x your dev costs on marketing just to get it onto shelves long enough to make a profit.

As a side note for sports games, in the UK there's only one 'sports' game (as in, you 'play' the sport) that sells well, and that's FIFA, the PC version of which is just a 1080p version of the console one. The other sports game that sells well is football manager, which is a PC exclusive. In the US that is probably different.

And as long as developers add control support for games not suited to kb + m, PC is just the better choice for price 'n' pretty :D Especially since the focus on PC components recently has been the move to smaller form factors like mATX, which makes desktops more manageable.

P.S. The idea of having a console for TV's ect. is being replaced by TV's which do all the entertainment anyway, or tablets. Consoles need to play games well to remain viable, and i don't trust the next gen will do that enough. But ah well, it's too 'corporationy' now in the console space.

Note that i don't have anything against the existence of consoles, but i take massive issue to how current consoles are ruining gaming and turning it into a race to the intellectual bottom for games in order to appeal to the CoD kiddie crowd. It's depressing. If it wasn't for PC and the fact crowdfunding is probably going to lead to the ability for us to start AAA game studios with good ideas without a load of stockholders saying 'MOAR COD!', AAA gaming would be heading into a very dark place indeed.

Why consoles exist

-most people cant afford a gaming PC so they have to buy a console, meaning most people game on consoles
-exclusive games
-built specifically for gaming so when you see a game for your console you dont have to worry if your console is powerful enough for it. But with PC your PC needs to be good enough to run certain games.
-Supports up to 4 people playing together on the same console
-Consoles dont get viruses like PCs

I have a gaming PC, but i also have a console as well. That is because on console i can game with people who dont have PC, and vice versa. And also, some games just feel better playing on a console controller but that is my opinion.

for example, mmo's and RPG's are definetly meant to be played on PC, but first person shooters and racing games seem better to play on a console.

In the end, i just feel like Console's are better for gaming just because they are meant for gaming and have lots of specific gaming features in them. PC's are just good mainly for MMO's and RPG's. Yes i agree PC's are more powerful and all etc...but ANY game that comes out for more than one console including PC, i will definetly buy it for the console not PC, and i will only buy games for PC that are only on PC. I'd rather play Fifa 13 and Halo 4 on my xbox than PC, likewise id never like to play Guild Wars 2 on my xbox because its built for PC and MMOs function better on PC......

In the end its all just opinion...but you cant argue with the fact that more people will buy consoles because theyre cheaper than PC, and because consoles are specifically for gaming it will be better and funner for most games

Well first, it is very very easy to just plug in a 360 or PS3 controller into your PC's USB port and use that.

Second, you can't just come in to a topic like this and say that FPS games feel better with a controller and not expect to get called out on that! Come on man! Where is your sense of self-preservation!? xD
