so, what if i wanted gold from gems?  is this a good time to convert gems to gold?  i need 100g for tier 3 cultural heavy armor, how many gems would i need at the current exchange rate to acquire 100g?

You can get approximately 10g for 800 gems so you would need to spend $100

Oddly enough that makes 1g = $1 (approx.)

Let the speculation begin!

The gem<->gold exchange rate is determined by the demand for gold->gem or gem->gold.  If someone spends real money to get gems, the price is always fixed at $10/800 gems.  I think it is inflation.  If gold is plentiful, because of FOTM or otherwise, then there is no real need for people to convert gems to gold.

Also when Anet adds items bought with gems ie....skins,chests, makeover, kits...to the shop it influences demand for gems. Since ppl likely to buy said items with rl cash > gems will use the majority of gems on the items. Thus those ppl are really not balancing out the demand the same items create for ppl that use ig gold > gems.

Player 1a: buys gems with cash....uses gems on items...doesn't sell gems for ig gold...doesn't adjust gem-gold ratio
Player 2a: buys gems with cash....uses gems on items...sells remainder gems for ig gold...slightly adjusts gem-gold ratio
Player 2: buys gems with ig gold....uses gems on items...adjusts the gem-gold ratio

The whole thing is messed up b/c there are not  finite amounts of gold nor gems. Add in influences and it gets very much one sided as anyone who looks at the data can see.

On the speculation front...as long as Anet only offers things exclusive to gems...I don't really see any speculation at all...it's obvious they are the main factor to why gem from gold prices increase...not to mention it only benefits them when prices increase.
2+2=4....not speculation

100 dollars?  ugh. . . i can almost buy the collector's edition with that. . .

i need 1 gem to = 2g

that would be perfect.  i dont have alot of time to play, im one of those players that ANet values the most, the ones that have to spend real money in their shop to stay current with everyone else.  :D

If that were to happen, the economy would completely crash and we'd be using legendary precursors as currency.
