Hey guys,

Well... I've been building toward your standard Greatsword Berserker build, but I'm beginning to run into a few ro*s. It just doesn't seem to fit me as much as I thought it would - I love the sniper beams, but I need something that has stuff to fall back on. So, I'm going to ask you guys for advice on this "Bunker" build I hear so much about - allegedly it's got pretty good survivability (albeit slow killing, which shouldn't matter since I want to group up a lot/do dungeons). What's the standard utility/elite/trait roster for such a build, and what are its strengths and weaknesses? How does it fare when it comes to tagging mobs in DEs? The Staff seems a great weapon for avoiding and dealing with a lot of crowds - so that's definitely going to be in there - but what'd the other set be? Sword/Pistol? Sword/Focus? Or maybe not even sword to begin with? Scepter offers decent single target confusion after all...

Any assistance in sorting this out would be greatly appreciated. I understand that I won't be offering as much DPS wise, but I'm hoping that a sizeable amount of conditions would more than make up for it.

Although I run a Glamour build for Dungeons on my Mesmer the Bunker build (seen in pvp mainly) goes something like below.

TBH not sure that a bunker build is the right way to go for dungeons. The point of a bunker is to allow your illusions to take damage for you. In dungeons mobs hit for way harder than players do which means your illusions will get one shot pretty much no matter what you do.

PVP Bunker Build

For PVE you would want to make the following changes

Elite: Timewarp
Heal: Either Feast
Utilities: Drop Decoy for something else

Glamour Build Traits (equipment is up to you)

Hmm. I'm liking the idea of this Glamour build of yours - seems like it offers a lot more in terms of team support than the whole illusion bunker thing.

What sort of stats would you recommend? I'm thinking of dungeon running on my alt for a set of Power/Precision/Condition damage armor and weapons, then perhaps paying a guildie to craft me some of the new Passion Flower accessories - the Healing Power is a bit of a waste, but they add more points to toughness and conditions.

Staff for one set, definitely, but I'm thinking Scepter/Focus for the other...

My Glamour build is an adaptation of the Might Stacking build I use for PVP. In terms of traits it works for both as what makes a Might stacking build is one Minor trait Shattered Strength, sigils and runes you use.

This link below is pretty close the full build I use for PVE. Note that you may not be able to stack as much Might in PVE as you would PVP as there are more mobs in PVE, and chances are you wont get all the bounces from your Staff and Mirror Blade to come back to you, but still works well.

See the link below on a Guru post I made a while back with information on why Might stacking works.
If you have the gold I'd go with Bloodlust sigils on the Greatsword for PVE

That looks really good! *Bookmarked* So, considering it's impossible to get Soldier's stats on Exotic jewelry...  should I just get that from AC armor instead? Also, I'm a bit torn on jewels.

Sorry for all of these stupid questions, I'm really kinda curious.

Not to step on any toes, but this is nothing like a standard bunker build. The salient quality of a bunker mesmer is that unlike a guardian, the mesmer retains quite a bit of offensive capability- they're more of a point repellent or anti-roamer than a trollololol damage sponge. It's more about damaging the other guy and not getting damaged yourself than it is about redirecting or mitigating it.

It looks something more like this:

To answer the OP, though: I think staff bunker builds have very limited uses in PvE. You can, however, build for something very similar but more offensive and succeed fairly well. Your clones still soak harmful effects and take heat off your group, and you still retain a lot of personal survivability, but mostly from being slippery and avoiding damage altogether with phase retreat, blurred frenzy, blink, PI distortion, and the like. The real kicker that makes it especially viable in dungeons is that you can gear for a mix of power and malice, which helps deal meaningful damage to objects like graveling mounds or small adds that die too quickly for conditions to tick.

It definitely requires that one don their big girl panties and ride without vit/tough training wheels, but it's worth learning to play IMO!

I was thinking kind of the same thing. Taht was no where near any bunker build I've seen a Mesmer use for PvP. That might work in PvE though, Mesmers are tanky enough for PvE without a bunker build.

The following is the build I use. It's more of a shatter/bunker build.
http://gw2skills.net...AzhSx1ldlUgbXIA

It has tons of survival capability and can turn out tons of shatters for burst DPS if you need it. Staff is a survival beast in it's self combined with Ethereal fields and you have tons of chaos armor up time. My first utility skill changes a lot based on the situation, Portal, Null Field, Veil, or Mirror Images. I used to run Blink instead of decoy but have gone back to decoy since I tend to run in small groups for WvW. Gear I use mostly Carrion with berserker or rampager's for to get to around 30% crit chance. That makes for more Vigor which means more dodge and clones to shatter from dodge.
Never anything but time warp for WvW or PvE. Moa is crap in WvW. Any situation where it will help you would have benefited from a faster stomp and additional ethereal field more. Ok, I use Mass Invis for a few occasions but usually Veil can do that job just as well unless I am maximizing stealth time.
Off-hand changes a lot depending on situation. I have exotic Pistol, Focus, and Torch that get switched out a lot.

The great thing is you can change out a few traits without having to respec and it's pretty good DPS in dungeons while providing a lot of support. It's a lot of work to do good DPS though because you have to manage shatters well which means lots of micro-managing of illusion generating abilities.

This is more what I use in dungeons and fractals (I am only lvl 2 FoTM). I rarely get downed and I swap all my Carrion armor for Berserker.

Utility skills get switched around a lot in PvE though.

Edit: Off-hand for PvE switches between Focus and Pistol. I really like focus though for Light field and warden. Warden does great for AoE and on bosses that stand still and then can immediately be shattered.
