I've been playing since release, and I never really had LOTS of money etc, you know?

I mean, I was never really broke or anything, but yeah.

I just seem so spend so much money on gear, alts and THEIR gear, new content patches (skins for halloween for example) and so on.

I've been dreaming of getting a legendary a while back but nowadays I just don't see that happening.

Whats your opinions on this? Any advice?

tl;dr I'm broke as hell.

EDIT: I was browsing around the youtubes a bit and found this video:

Seems pretty awesome, gonna have to try it out with a group.

Seems legit.
Also, don't spend money on exotics if you're gearing alt characters, rare works just fine if you're short on cash.
Check things on the trading post before you merch them.
I stopped playing for a month or two after release, came back and did some dungeons, Grenth in Cursed Shore and fractals with my guild, and made 15 gold in 3 or 4 days. Literally no grind, just doing stuff when the guild was, and I made a sizable contribution towards the Reaver of the Mists I'm going for.

If you actually want to make money, there are ways that can make money. It all boils down to how much work you wanna do to get it. The more work put in, the more gold. You can't do one thing once and expect to have alot of gold. No game is like that, this isn't an exception.

Well I wouldn't have say it that way, in my opinion money can be earned pretty easily and we have many ways to earn it.

The real problem here isn't to earn some gold but the gold sinks in the game. Economy is out of control, Gems/Gold Conversion is getting insane as the time goes by etc etc.

If you plan to stuff alts and get legendary maybe you can try to do as I do : I just run dungeons with my alts, this way I earn money/karma/loot/dungeon tokens. When your alt will hit 80 you'll have enough tokens to buy all your armor (or karma if dunegon armors don't suit your stats) and tons of cash.

I dunno, it seems there's very few ways of making money any more...

You've got exploit/bug stuff like Arah runs for 1 boss and Steel Tide story mode.

Then there's the Fractals, if you can get a group, if you can stand running them and the overly annoying mechanics.

The only other thing is randomly farming mobs for crafting materials, but that's pretty slow.

There used to be Penitent/Shelter and Plinx farming but they're dead now.

Unfortunately, I like to play solo to earn money, instead of joining groups for "elite/challenging" content so there's not really any options available right now.

Question, feedback or issue? Pm me!

Because the way ArenaNet handles money in this game is broken. They're stingy and only allow the tiniest trickle of money into the game, and they tax what little mone you get. The game has been forced into a deflationary spiral, devaluing everything except prices which ArenaNet controls. This is to drive people to the gem store to buy gems to convert to gold.

A surprising (even to me) number of my friends have moved on from GW2, even one really hardcore friend from tumblr whom I was sure would be with it for years. And aside from the vertical progression bait & switch, the reason I hear the most is that they're sick and tired of being broke and they strongly dislike the cynical feeling of the game - where it almost feels necessary sometimes to buy gems if you just want to bounce around everywhere with the waypoints.

I've been playing a lot of other games lately, and they've all shown how unfun GW2 is in its current state. Mass Effect 3, Champions Online, and even Free Realms have a far less cynical approach to online gaming. GW2 is a casino dressed up as a game, the people who play it are gambling addicts.

GW2 is just not a fun game. More and more people are realising it. Sounds like it's begun to sink in for you, too. OP. Move on, don't draw it out.

Money is hard because they sell it in the cash shop, they want you not to have much gold so you buy it.

If you want to earn gold in this game, the amount depends on how much "work" and time you want to put into.

You can get yourself a decent amount of gold running DE's, farming and dungeons, but that's pretty much your game play experience.
You can earn a lot of gold by playing the Trading Post, but requires time spend analysing and sometimes getting it wrong.

For me, I mess around in the Trading Post for 15-30 mins, then if I know I'm going to get an hour or so uninterrupted game time, I'll do a dungeon, else I'll go back to mapping.
When I'm about to stop playing, I check/buy/sell anything on the Trading Post that seems good and log out.

As you can tell I don't play a massive amount (max 2-4 hours every 2-3 days), but using this combination I can earn 10-20g each time I log in and play.

As people above have said, the economy is out of control  mainly due to the fact you buy gold with gems and gems with real cash. But also at level 80, then end tier items are in more and more demand, meaning those items in the Trading Post will only go up too... just look at Ecto's I remember buying a few around 10s, now they are nearly 30s each. (Mostly due to the ascended gear crap ball)

That also takes, pretty much, literally all day of just doing dungeons. So, if someone has the time to spend 10+ hours during the day doing dungeons runs that's fine.

It's a case of YMMV. For the many that say they are broke, there will be many that say it's easy to make in-game coin. Logically then, making money is neither difficult nor easy and perhaps wealth depends on how the in-game coin is spent. That's overly simplistic but there's some truth in it.

If we are full on about gearing our main and all our alts, right down to 'best stats' and aesthetics, then it's likely we will be broke. If on the other hand you have a 'main' that you will spend serious amounts of cash on to get aesthetics, grind dungeons for the stats on equipment you want for your 'main' (or use karma to buy appropriate gear), and using greens and blues picked up as loot in the interim, then you will have some cash left over in the bank...that's even if you're quite casual and are not deep into farming.

So I think your goals and philosophy in the game will have a lot to do with how much in-game coin you have. I pretty much stuck to above and while I'm not rich, I'm not completely broke either. But I'm happy, if you get my drift. ^_^

I have a single main, with full t3 cultural armor, that I transmuted to an exotic Knight's crafted armor (That I didn't buy, I sent mats to guildie and he crafted for me).

I have Dawn, Gift of metal, 38 Icey Runestones, a Scythe Staff skin and a Ghastly Shield which I'm planning to sell as soon as they spike around 75g. Which will happen in a few months, right around April-May. If they drop to 20g, I'm buying another pair.

I don't farm, I don't do the gems to gold convert. But I DID make a few gold when I was curious about the drop rate on Mini's. So I bought $20 worth of gems, bought mini's, and got about 13.5-14g off them.

I run 0/0/30/30/10 on a Warrior, which I was forced to because I run Commander in WvW so I have to stay alive. And I still get kills, thanks to the 1200 range on Bow + 10% vs foes on fire + F1/3 skills on bow which absolutely slaughter people.

I rarely die, and thanks to the Halloween event, I have about 40 or so Instant Repair Canisters which if you do the math to each full repair being roughly 12 silver, that's almost 5g in repairs I'm saving.

I don't travel a lot, I use Mists to get to LA almost every time I want to travel. I try to play the market best as I can, but don't focus on it too much.

tl;dr

Making gold is easy, keeping it is not.

This is my experience. I tend to be pretty broke all of the time because I keep on spending my gold. That said, I play a couple of hours a day (2-3) and I earn about 1-2 gold out of that doing dungeons and selling drops. For me that's enough, but I have low expectations.
I'm still managing to deck out several characters in exotics, it just takes a bit. I don't mind that, I'm far from done with the game anyway.

It's not hard to make gold. Some days I made 15 gold on rares and other items(such as onyx lodestones, charges cores etc etc etc) dropping just from dungeons. On average I make about 2-3g per day if I don't farm and about 5-7g per day if I do.

Like in real life, the hard workers ie (dungeon runners, orr farms etc) they earn enough money for day to day but not a lot of money. Whereas other players who got onto things early ie MF related stuff (exploits, t6 upgrading, early game precursors etc) those people got filthy rich. Being able to predict the right kind of shift in the economy can earn you heaps and heaps of money but it's all about getting there early to get first picks.

But earning a decent and honest living with normal tp flippings with very tight profit margins is not bad too. The majority of the population is just not meant to "shine" but we're still happy with what we got. Keep the saving up, eventually you'll pay your mortgage off :3

Yea dungeons are pretty profitable. I don't think I make as much as you mention but every run gives 26 silver, 3 bags with an extra 3s each (if you don't skip the boss, that is), and a few dozen of blues and some greens and an average of 1 gold drop (I always run out of bag space -.-).

Depending on how fast you can run the dungeon (some are way longer/harder than others) it makes a really nice income. I've been running dungeons for a few days and I made 15 gold. Not to mention 4 "free" exotics for my alts, that cost 2-3 gold each when you buy it off the TP.

It is the best way to deck out your characters in exotics yes. It's just a shame they don't always have the correct stats.
Money's good as well.

My new lv80 warrior has gone for cheap masterworks to 5/6 exotics in 3 days by getting dungeon pieces and buying knight's pieces on the TP. I guess that means I must have gotten about 7-8 gold in those days from running dungeons too :)

Deflationary spiral? What, are people LOSING money every day?

Have you seen what ecto are doing? Even low-level mats are starting to rise because there aren't enough low-level players anymore.

To spend on what, market items that have had their values "deflated" to nothing anyway? Whole lot of gold they're gonna have to buy there.

After reviewing your recent posts, I am beginning to think you work for some sort of 3rd party  and are paid to trash the game and encourage players to stop playing.

Or is it that you have such a terrible personal life that the only way you can gain the attention you so obviously seek is to be a hater on internet forums?

Myself and guild members run AC and other dungeons for some quick and easy cash, granted its probably not as efficient as previous farming methods. It is much more entertaining though :P

Personally I dont find gaining the quanitity of cash I require to be all that difficult ^^

Money does come but it comes slowly this in no way causes a problem for the character.

Armour drops for free so do weapons the only things I have had to buy in the game were runes and sigils because the ones I wanted didn't drop fast enough to suit me.
I bought storage bags because I wanted bigger ones than I could craft.
I also bought some raw materials to speed up my crafting.
I only have 7 gold that is enough to cover any common game requirement.

It is pretty easy to have some very good armour and weapons with near max stats for free.
Then pay out maybe a gold or two to add a few bits.

Gaining exotics precursers ascanded legendaries or even 20 slot bags and your going to have to be lucky or grind away.

I find the easiest way to make money in the game is by not thinking about money spent and running dungeons.  It gets really boring fast though because dungeons can be hit or miss, so pick one you enjoy doing and don't mind farming.
