"We had a huge Halloween update in October, we just had a big one in November, we have a giant Christmas update coming in December, and all of those have gone over really well, and I think in December people are going to be really excited. But January and February are actually are biggest updates to date. They’re even bigger than all the stuff we did in October, November and December. And I think that when people see how much stuff they’re gonna get for no monthly fee in January and February, they’re probably going to be blown away. These two months combined are basically an expansion’s worth of content for free" - Colin Johanson

Good news! I can't wait to see how Wintersday will be done in GW2.
The huge updates next year were a shock to me. A good shock!
Looking forward to see what all Anet has in store for us.

Bet he's talking about Ascended gear. And since we all know how long it takes to get just a back item, "an expansion’s worth of content for free" means very little if all that "content" is a boring geargrind.

I wish they would fix the game first..

Yeah I see no need for new content and hope they simply build on the great content they have. Halloween and Lost Shores were pretty much PVE and (some) SPvP content in a game that caters for many different areas. I hope WvW doesn't get shafted again like the previous updates have done (in terms of ignoring it and taking away players from it).

I love they (and the community) always say "free" update. Lol. Simply marketing talk and a very clever and profitable business strategy (which is no secret what they use). Provide the content and provide something extra that people can pay for (gems). And I hope it does work well for them. But technically it is not "free".

Looking forward to the new content though and excited to see what they have in store

And actually, in February, we’re going to do a whole bunch of expansions on top of that world vs world area, to make that experience even more uniquely Guild Wars.
Man, the future sure seems bright, can't wait to see how much the game will grow.

And if anyone's worried about the old content being ignored, I'd say the blog by Chris Whiteside should at least allay such concerns to a degree.

It's important to always have new content on the way, and reassuring to have Colin and the obscenely talented folks at ArenaNet on the job.

But all I really want for Wintersday is a stocking full of bug fixes, and I'm hoping we won't get lumps of QA coal instead. :P

I'm hoping for more accessible Ascended items, atm it's wwwaaaayyy too expensive materials wise. I know they said they'll look into it, but I wonder how much it will lower... Especially since they'll probably put in ascended weapons or armor next.

A little info to compliment the op post ArenaNet won't be doing expansions for #GW2 as often as GW1, but there will always be the monthly live updates. http://bit.ly/YEE3Hv

So, is that a monthly live update as in... an update each month, or will it be like the GW1 monthly updates?

From the sounds of the interview, there will be an update of some kind every month, as he says there will be a Wintersday update, then one in January and February where apparently they are addressing WvW.

COLIN!  *throws myself at him*

Jokes aside, something about him saying this re-assures me.  I hope he's adding some really good stuff around there.

I'm truly starting to think that this game wasn't ready when it came out and they are giving us this content as something super cool and new when it had to be in the game at release on the first place. Really don't care anymore as long as the game gets better, but I'm a bit fed up of this "carrots". And no more new bugs please.

I would say it's a good thing that they're adding to the game.  Isn't that a lot better than them NOT adding stuff?  I don't understand how people can be upset that they're adding stuff.  Most people are upset because there's nothing to do in these games and if ANet adds stuff it's a carrot?

Granted, adding in gear tiers and grinds that go completely against their supposed design philosophies is pretty lame, and updates that feature big glowing signs that nudge people towards the gem store are kind of iffy too even if they do need to make some cash.

I don't care for the "one time event" thing since many players have variable schedules and/or timezones and that's just not a way to do MMORPG content, IMO.

But overall, I'd rather see the game growing rather than stagnating. If they add something new or do something every month, there's bound to be something for one to like at some point.

I was just commenting on this technique of announcing something as vage as an 'even bigger' update for february, the 3rd of December. A good game is one that can stand by itself, not one that needs a constant stream of additions each month, because then the month they stop adding them the game is dead. And we all know they won't be able to keep that speed up for very long, at least not for free.

I'm all for free added content don't get me wrong (well, if it does not include a gear threadmill), but I'd rather have them just naturally introducing it instead of start hyping it up 3 months upfront.

Ah, the classic "I'm all for ____, but I'd rather ___" statement.

You're not really all for it when you do that.

I'm glad you appreciate the subtelties of the language. I'm all for discussing grammar, but I'd rather not derail the op.

I was thinking along the lines of the Sorrow's Furnace update for GW1, where they introduced a whole new dungeon and even a new type of loot (greens were introduced there), but that was not hyped 3 months in advance, and green loot only had aesthetic and convenience advantages, rather than being 3% more powerful than anything else before. I was really impressed by that addition, and I (naively) thought that this would be their way of expanding GW2 as well. They could just add more storylines, more events, and shinier loot at the end, and you could go play there or go play somewhere else instead and not be at a disadvantage. Where you play for fun and not for a bigger carrot.

That's the problem. They're just adding new content to make us happy.

Can't you see how sinister that is?
