Can eles be good at countering these classes? In such case, which weapon choice/build would you say would be best at countering those?

What I've found is dagger off hand is key.

Make sure your RTL is off cooldown before engaging, and lightning flash also helps. Once that mez or thief is about to deliver the finishing blow or disappears in stealth (as that is inevitable), smack that air 4 button and WHOOSH! your in the clear! that'll teach em!

With D/D I've never been beaten in a fair 1v1 by a thief (fair = I don't start at 20% health). Just use shocking aura and watch them weep.

Thieves are actually our easiest matchup with D/D. They go down quick to shocking auras and they can't dance around you due to your PBAoEs. Mesmers with boon stripping and condintion spamming should prove to be a challenge. Be careful of your dodges and cleanses and be sure to carry armor of earth to ensure Ether Renewals.

With DD thieves are easy and mesmers a pain in the ass. With scepter it's the other way around. :(

I actually still have an okay time with thieves using S/D. I have an equally hard time with Mesmers using S/D since good ones move around often and block LoS with their clones. It's also harder for me to focus while using S/D so I take more shatters than I should. Both classes are equally annoying when they stealth since stealthing drops target :/

What the heck! Am I reading this right? Elementalists having an easy time with thieves! Wow!
GW2 certainly is not the type of MMOs I'm used to haha. Something revolutionary for me~

Thieves got nerfed to hell and back again so the meta's changed. The nerfs pigeonholed them into BS builds and even that build lost a bit of burst damage. It's good thing for us too since the builds that actually gave us a lot of trouble and still do in the right hands is the S/D daze builds. No one runs that build anymore because instead of permadazing they actually need to time it now :U.

Not sure how thieves lost burst damage Featherman,  my engi just got wiped by a thief that did 24k damage in about 5 1/2 seconds in wvw about 10 minutes ago.  Arena Net didnt tone down anything to that class.

If there was someone with you while the Thief was bursting you down, your partner would have likely wiped him out just as fast! Or so I suspect the game design to be. Its the usual facade for Assassin classes in almost every game :o. "OMG that thief pwned me like i was a noob in secs flat" Reply to that would usually be: "Dont roam solo as a clothie toy nab~ We are the gods of 1v1!!!1one"

From my limited MMO experience.

They nerfed CnD damage by 33% so as to allow players to not be instagibbed by the ridiculous mug+CnD combo. You probably got unlucky with critical hits :/ That's the inherent problem with the thief class. It's instagibb based on chance and super reflexes.

Countering Thieves is very easy, Mesmers on the other hand....I still haven't figured that out unfortunately. If you're running a D/D build, I suggest staying in/switching back to Fire for the duration of the fight. It has solid AoE and constant conditions, so it's pretty good in both Thief and Mesmer duels.
