So, i was looking into getting my ranger a 50% crit chance, and use the "bleed on crit" trait plus a crit proc sigil.

Precision is of course at the core of the build, but i was wondering if anyone did the math on how does crit damage scale compared to condition or power, and if there is a "perfect spot" to maximize dps in that regard, assuming:

-1 every 2 hits is a crit
-all hits are flanking hits
-all crits bleed

I was also considering a more tanky build, with low power and crit damage, but stacked toughness, condition damage, and of course enough precision to get to that 50%....as pow and crit dmg work together,  i'm not sure how much sense would do cutting one of them for toughness.
In this later case i might even go for an earth sigil, which is kinda useless if you're counting on crits to actually do most of the damage.

Ignore critical damage. Go for Power and Precision and make sure you get a good "chance on critical" sigil for your weapon. Condition damage as minor.

With the fire rate of the short bow you can get a large amount of procs for any "chance on critical" effect.

Im also using all zerker gear. I run 20/20/15/0/15 right now and it has been working for me very very well. I use cond dmg runes on my gear though. I notice it did bring up my cond dmg ticks. I feel zerker gear is your best option then you can have cond dmg rings, runes, ect Since the rate of fire is pretty good on the SB right now crit dmg does seem to matter. I was testing side by side with another ranger that has full cond gear, pow/pre/cond and I was taking down the same mob a bit faster. Power is our number one stat for sure so thats another good thing about zerker gear, you get a good amount of it. Anyway all I can say is im loving my ranger right now and the traits im running work very well for just about anything. Another thing I notice is if your in a group with a cond necro and your running a full cond build its pointless. Finding that sweet spot is what its about and I feel im there as my dmg is great either way.

So I would say go for both crit and cond. I really wouldnt go with all cond gear/runes/rings,ect. Big crits make all the difference in this game, in all aspects of it. But I will say for each his own and play what you like and find fun. I just went with what I thought would come to be a good spec/gear mix and it works great for me, but others may play different. As long as you have fun and can do enough dmg then your set. Also if you want to see a difference in your cond dmg and the difference it makes spec 15 into surv if you havent before and that alone will show you what 150 cond dmg will do and the toughness increase is also great if you dont want to gear it. But one of the things I feel is another great reason to go 15 into survival is the 2 seconds of protection when you dodge roll. It has saved me many times. Anyway have fun!

"-1 every 2 hits is a crit"

I have to say that this is not a legit guess. If you get 50% crit rate, that means every shot you make will have 50%. You could possibly have 10 non-crit shots, or could also have 10 crits. I believe this will greatly effect your hope.

Although Sharpened Edges seems like a nice trait, it only procs 1 second of bleeding. Granted, if you're using a weapon without an on-crit effect, then it would be pointless to not get Sharpened Edges. But for it to be meaningful, you need both Precision and Cond Dmg for it to matter, as you'll only get one tick out of it. I went for a mix of Precision and Cond Dmg, but I'm still having trouble deciding which sigil to get.

I'd say a sigil of earth sounds like your best bet if you're going prec/cond. With a decently high crit chance, and if you have a source of fury, then the shortbow's firing rate combined with the sigil of earth could make for some nasty bleeds. According to the wiki it has a cooldown of 2 seconds, but the bleed is 5 seconds, so it shouldn't be hard to keep 2-3 stacks of bleed on your target with the sigil alone. Assuming all shots are flanking, you'll be doing some nasty bleeds.

It's also going to depend on your playstyle. I do about 50/50 PvE/WvW, and in WvW, I prefer Power over Prec/Cond since I'm usually stomping on gates... lol I can't go roflstomping on people like a Thief. If you do a lot of sPvP, you want control over all else, which SB contributes with 4 and 5, which do not scale with any stat.

Back to the OP - You will want Cond Dmg if: 1) you solo a lot in PvE, 2) you do a lot of dungeons, or 3) you're in a WvW zerg and are battling another zerg. If you do a lot of PvE, you want more power to get credit for kills in events or bosses, since Warriors will stack more bleeds than you. If you're in WvW, Cond Dmg won't help if you stomp on gates a lot rather than opposing zergs.
