I know there's a Find Magic percentage stat that supposedly increases the magic item (rare, masterwork, etc) drop rate.  And I've read that continually farming the same area/mobs supposedly reduces one's chances of seeing a magic item drop after a certain amount of time.  Though nothing has been confirmed officially that I've read.

But beyond these things?

Here are a few personal anecdotal theories of influences listed in decreasing confidence:

• Champion and Veteran mobs have a higher drop rate of magic items when killed
  
• Killing a mob that is of higher level than the player increases the magic item drop rate.
  
• Killing a mob that hasn't been killed (by anyone) for a long time possibly increases the magic item drop rate.

Anyone care to weigh in on these or other factors?  Or is there an actual definitive list of factors somewhere?

I'll keep it short, it's just random (RNG), and "luck". That's all from my observation.
I got my first rare from a normal Son of Svanir, despite getting junk from Vet Sons of Svanir.
Got my first exotic 2 weeks ago as a drop, from a risen spider in Orr, and nothing from countless Vets and champions killed. Infact Vets and Champ mobs hardly ever dropped loot earlier, recently they said they've patched it to give better drops, I still get only blues or greens or Nothing. I run with full exotic MF gear, MF accessories with MF sigils/runes & MF food & banner buffs, etc.
Sorry, but at the moment, there's no point in even discussing MF since the Nov. 15 patch. I get nothing other than Porous bones with the above said gear (even from the final chest in Balthazar event, from the champion abomination and risen priest of Balth, all just blues and greens).

My solution was skill all of the crafters up to 400.  Then...for things like Armor/Weapons/Jewelry, use the AC, JC or WS to create the exotics from the karma recipes.  All of my level 80s are decked out with exotic everything - weapons, armor, jewelry...all because I took the time to level crafting.

No need for the pursuit of the actual exotic...now the pursuit is for the 'skin'...

And sometimes the skin is only found as exotic. I don't think he's looking to farm specifically exotics...personally I'd like a few more rares, as they always get salvaged for ectos. Once the characters are "decked out" with crafter exotics, what's left? Grinding for better skins. So you want rarer items/materials to drop so you have a better chance at salvaging ectos, high dollar runes/sigils, high demand exotic skins, or legendary precursors.

I noticed an immediate increase in powerful blood drops while troll farming in frostgorge once I switched from my exotic fighting armor to my rare magic find armor, with and without MF food. I don't even use MF food outside of dungeons where I have predictable drops of 10s from known bosses, when that 30-40% more coin from monsters really shines. Getting 60 copper vs 45 copper doesn't really entice me to drop 4s for the food. But having that full-time MF bonus from the gear DOES show definite improvement in drop rates. And it's mostly from trash mobs I've noticed. I think I've gotten one rare from a champion, and I've gotten a couple of exotics from veterans. Most of my rare drops are from normal trash mobs.

Of course, that doesn't mean that the rate of rares from trash mobs is higher...because I kill more trash mobs than veterans/champions of course.

The more I play the most I think killing mobs of much higher level (3+) increases drop rates of rare items.  Recently I went back and cleared some low levels to level up some characters and I saw a dramatic decrease of masterwork or higher drops.  This is across 8 characters.  I move back to higher level zones and I see an immediate spike up in rare weapon and armor drops.

This is around level 40-50.
