Hello Guys! I'm new here. I never played GW but my boyfriend played GW1 and he loved it. In the meantime i was playing WOW. Now i'm wondering what should i buy him as a chrismas gift. Is GW2 as good as GW1? And would someone who plays only wow will like it? I want to find a game which we both can play.

That's a hard question to answer. For your boyfriend you should ask for which reasons he loved GW1. GW2 didn't import nearly anything from GW1. The only things may be itemsystem (max stats are fast to get and from that on there is only skins to work towards) which is not really the case anymore in GW2. The lore is imported. The graphic is GW-esque but updated. And that's for it.

If he loved GW1 because of the story, skillsystem, pvp, low level and item cap (which never increased) than don't buy it. Especially if your friend is nostalgic.

For you, you have to ask why you played wow. GW2 is not about making instances and powering up your gear. It's more about the lore/story and the world and further the styling of your character(s). Don't expect pvp to be good (even when it was great in GW1, in GW2 it's simply not).

One new thing that neither wow nor gw1 had is World vs World, which I find really fun when played organised (the only thing left that I really really love about GW2) but it gets not a lot of love from anet so I don't know how it will develop in the future.

Hope I could help you with your decision.

Pretty much what you like from GW1 are not gonna be in GW2 and what you like in WOW are not gonna be in gw2 either. Gw2 is supposed to be the middle ground. Combined the mediocre things from GW1 and WOW you get gw2 :D it totally worth 60$ though i must say and it can be a very thoughtful gift.

Yeah, about the only thing GW2 has from GW1 is the lore. I love both games, but whether or not a person will like GW2 really depends on the person. We can't tell you whether you and your boyfriend will like it or not.
You will just have to try it and see. There is no subscription fee, so it might be worth it for you to give it a try.

I played GW1 to death over 6 years play and 14 characters I pretty much loved every minute, never played WOW so cannot compare them.
GW2 the PVE part of the game is fantastic as long as your not one of those that insists on getting elite gear as that is a bit of a slog.
You can get max damage and max protection gear easily its just the fancy exotic and Legendary gear that needs loads of time and money.

Basic story lines of the characters also enjoyable, and depending on how you create your character these are different from other characters storylines though eventually they all come together with the main storyline.
Playing with other players is mostly casual and events scale up depending on number of characters so you actually welcome other players, loot too is available for all participating players not just the first one to grab it.

Dungeons are the place for more organised teams of players and these are enjoyable if you can get accepted on a team to do them.

pvp has problems esp wvw but they are working on them.

Check out some of the videos on youtube to get a feel of the game.

The Tales of Tyria Podcasts made by Bridger and guests have pretty much covered everything in the game

I've played both GW and WoW and GW2 has mixed what I love from both games: A more traditional MMO feel but with more active combat with the GW system of low-required grind and not being locked out of content because of gear level.

The personal story is a bit meh in some places, wonderful in others. The world is beautiful, amazing and huge etc. and yeah. As a wow player you might like it (unless the gear treadmill is what keeps you playing wow), unsure about your boyfriend though as there's pretty much a 50% chance he will or won't like it. (around 75% of my GW friends love it but many other gw players don't).

As this is an opinion based question it has no place in Q&A. You can find plenty of players thoughts/opinions by using our search function, after a quick search I found two threads which would probably be of interest to you. That being said, this thread will be closed.
Quick Note: Please use a more concise title in future Q&A threads.
