You are in a battle trying to hold off an overwhelming force, say, defending a breach in a wall or holding an archway against superior forces.

   You are making a pretty good fight out of it, moving into and out of LoS of the enemy forces, raining death and destruction on their heads as best you can.

  The enemy is gaining ground and about to push through.

   A couple of loot bags drop right in the line of fire of the enemy as you were kiting.

   Do you go for self preservation, or do you go for the loot bags, which will bring certain death?

  Secondary question....

   If you go for the loot bags....do you really care what's in them? Why?

   The problem is, I am personally compelled to go for the loot, even though I know it is going to be some crap I don't need and not worth that much. Inevitably, I will go for the loot.

   It's not that I need anything from the loot bags...even badges. But, for some reason, I just can't stand leaving loot laying around.

  My movement in PVP is oftentimes dictated by the placement of loot bags and not what would be the best maneuver for combat. I'm not sure why that is, since only about 1 in a thousand will have anything that's worthwhile.

   It's kind of like diving for a lottery ticket in the middle of an interstate highway...but I can't help it.

Yeah I always go for loot bags asap because they will disappear after some time. Usually a suicide run but oh well.

I go for the loot bag especially if there are a few that drop at the same time. Its not even whats in it, its addicting killing people and picking up stuff for it. I have no idea why

I only grab loot bags during combat if I happen to run by them for whatever reason. I don't go out of my way to pick them up and I don't risk death just for a loot bag or 4.

Still a proper auto-loot in WvW would be so *ing nice.

I roll into the area where said loot bags are, mash my F key, and roll back to safety. Works sometimes, other times I become swiss cheese.

I often turn around for loot bags that I miss, but more often than not I am too busy running around trying not to die to get all of my bags. I am sure I only grab about 20% of them

This is when stealth is your best friend . I always get the loot and rarely am seen doing so.

It takes 3 minutes for a loot bag to dissappear which is typically enough time to turn around and grab them after you've wiped your enemy. In most cases if you're working with a good commander they'll instruct you to snag up your loot before moving on.

If you're kills are overshadowed by your deaths then the rarity of the bag is increased and you should probably snatch it up while you can.

Probably would not go for the bags unless something I was going to do anyway puts me in arms reach.   I have too much of an old-school, CS-trained hatred of dying.  Not that I don't die a lot like most everyone else, I just hate it enough that I wouldn't throw myself off the cliff for a couple bags (especially since they will probably contain 2 horse hooves or something...)

to be honest the way my keybinds are set Im able to mash my loot button at the same time that Im fighting. I usually dont need to run back to get loot when I think about it.

If you're in wvw for the loot, you're in wvw for the wrong reason, though I am not saying OP nor the other people here wvw for loot.

Just leave the loot alone. Loot bags take a really long time to disappear and chances are you can slip out the back behind the enemy force later and grab the bags. At that point you might even have an opportunity to wreak some havoc on their backlines, if only to distract them long enough for your allies to make a recovery.

I usually pick up my loot when I'm in mist form (either in mist form busy healing, or in mist form from downed state). But yeah I also have this urge to get loot bags when it's not the best move. It does make you unpredictable however, which is sometimes beneficial. When our party leader announces it is time to move on, I leave them behind though.
