NCSoft has done exactly the same thing in the past.  When GW1 was released, there was a collector's edition which was super hard to find and came with an extra in game animation that you couldn't get anywhere else.  Later, after GW1 was named Game of the Year, there was a GotY edition that came with a wealth of free max weapons THAT COULD BE CREATED AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANTED.   Even later, they released another edition that came with all these and a summoning stone for a reasonably powerful ally that could only be used before hitting the max level (it was a pretty nice addition).  Despite many complaints, the purchasers of the original were never given the bonus weapons, and the purchasers of the edition that came with the bonus weapons were never given the extra summoning stone later.  Although, they did eventually implement a digital upgrade that could be bought through the store for something like 5 dollars that would grant these bonuses.  I can certainly understand being P.O.ed by things like this, but A-net usually has very little to do with decisions like that... its mostly coming from the publisher.  

Now, the real travesty is that anyone who bought the original digital deluxe edition ended up paying an extra 20 dollars for shit that is worthless after level 5 or so.  Honestly, other than the one-time guild influence and the one time glory, the best item was the hero's band, which gives a wonderful +2 to all your attributes!  No, I didn't type that wrong... +2 (even a lvl 10 crafted ring typically gives +10 to single chosen attribute).  So, for all those complaining, rest assured that this witch's hat will almost certainly be pointless to use for its stats from a very early point in the game (though I will admit the skin is somewhat nice).

Didn't take long for the hate mob to catch on.  It's a hat, for Abbadon's sake.  

In GW1, you'd get everlasting imps, new armor, handy weapons with stats, etcetera.

What makes you think that the Witch hat will have any stats at all?
It is most likely (as in about 99,9 %) that it will be townclothes. Just like the hat we could get at release.

I got the DDE to support areana net as I heard a lot of great things about them in GW1 but after about a month of playing I regretted that decision, though I still play till this day. maybe 1-2hrs/week.

Yea it's a slap int he fast to people who already own the game but oh well. I mean why did they have to give them a special item? Why not gems or something so they can pick an item for free that we already have access to. Not to mention maybe they will like what they purchase in the gem store and buy more of that item on their own thus A.Net would make even more money.. doh!

Haha, even if it was, people hate the fact that new players who didn't pre-purchase are getting it for free. There is just something about the tradition of exclusive in-game gear such as holiday hats and such that has a place in the hearts of many gw1 fans. I missed wintersdays 1-2 since i didnt have prophecies and didn't get those hats till this year. So for those who have been playing since the beginning, its like someone giving away one of your toes and knowing that the operation to put a new toe is thousands of dollars.

Seems to me they are not seeing the returns from cash shop they wanted so they are trying to lure more people into buying a game that is pretty meh in comparison to other games I have played. Don't get me wrong I love this game and play a lot but its probably a 6/10 at best...but this isn't the place to discuss this...

My two cents, low returns from shop, they are trying to create a new revenue source(or rather make an old one seem better)

I think you missed the point.

If they did the following things I don't think anyone would mind.

1. Upgrade all basic users that are registered now to the DDE version they are offering.
2. Give anyone with a DDE/Collectors version now 20$ in gems.

I have the collectors edition now. I'm not really bothered by it, but I do think it's a rip off to people playing now. Those people were willing to put their faith in Anet from the start. They were willing to put their money into something that might go horribly wrong (arguably has).

If they did the above two things they would get so much credit. They would lose nothing because the items are all digital. They could call it customer appreciation, and everyone wins. More people tell their friends about how great Anet is for doing it, and hopefully get their friends interested in playing.

I don't think it will happen. Anet is a company, and a very different one from the company that made GW1 so wonderful. I know they only care about money, so I'm not shocked by it. I suggest people just realize that Anet cares about money more than anything, and when they do they will start to expect things like this.

Sure they are milking the gem shop and squeezing our money but if you do not buy from the gem shop with real money the game is still enjoyable.

How dare A.net do a sale during the Christmas season, you almost think they were trying to get people to buy it as a gift for Christmas!

On a serious note though the rage here is quite ridiculous, the fact is the hat for all we know is just a repeat of the one from Halloween, yet people are acting like anet gave each sold copy 10000 free gems. Grow the * up. Games do sales like this all the time, expecially during Christmas. This is akin to complaining about someone buying the Game of the Year edition of say Oblivion for 20 bucks off steam, and going OMG RAGE THEY SAVED 40 DOLLARS WHERES MY 40 BACK! Like please, if you didnt expect them to have a Christmas season discount, you're a moron. And for those trying to compare it both here and on the official forums to the collectors edition, you have no idea what your talking about.

P.S. If your going to rage about a simple hat, can I ask are you raging about people having gotten stuff from the Hall of Monuments as well? I'm actually curious if you have that much of an entitlement complex.

Idk about you, but having my Deluxe Edition for 3 months prior to anyone joining the game is worth it for me. I don't want a refund, I just want my hat. And do you actually think people will praise ANet for doing the right thing. NOPE. I would bet my life that people would just complain they weren't compensated enough.

I havent seen it posted anywhere so I was wondering if anyone knew how limited this "limited time" is going to be. Like is the sale going to be until the end of December or is it only going to last a week. Thanks for any help provided and I apologize if it has been stated somewhere.

It wasn't that bad at all, in my experience at least. True, nobody hung out in the outposts which were almost always desserted, but LA always had several EU districts going and ofc Spamadan was always a nonstop spam n dance fest. I joined a laid back guild about 2 weeks after starting and stayed with them for a bit over a year. In spite of my aversion to dungeons, I even did a few CoF and UW runs with them. I played maybe 60% - 70% solo with H/H, but still, overall, it was a good and enoyable time in GW.

I never got the Digital Deluxe before the game released because the stuff sucked and it wasn't worth the money. Why does it matter that it's given away now? I haven't found a single class that I'd replace my elite with a Mistfire Wolf and I sure as hell don't roam around in town clothes.

I don't recall saying I wanted a refund. To answer your question though, yes. I think people would praise them. Why? Because anet has lost most of the goodwill they had. I know I've lost all faith in them. Keep in mind my original post. I'm not one of those raging about this. I don't really care one way or another. I think it would be nice if they upgraded their current players. I don't expect it though. I don't really expect them to do anything at this point that will not make them money.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I can't understand how other people feel. It also doesn't mean I should put down on their opinions like some of the posters here. In the end it's just a few items in a game that most of us won't care about in a few months anyway. Is that really worth the anger? To me it isn't.
