Or conversely what are you saving your gold for?
I ask because I'm about to buy more gems to purchase more bank slots and I'm not sure if that's the best way to spend my gold.

And I'd really like to have a Weapon with cool particle effects for one of my characters. Eye of Rodgort for my necro? Aether for my thief? There are lots of possibilities. Having more character slots would be nice too, so I could get characters with all professions.
It's really up to you, what you want to spend your money on.

^This. I won't share what they are, but the new announcement should start giving a few hints. Will be interesting to see what hits the gem store.

On another note, what I want to know is just how much value-adding they're doing to coins so that a gold coin is worth so much more than a full ingot...

I have no intention of playing my other alts at the moment as I wasn't a huge fan of the professions.
Now I need a goal. Not sure what to shoot for as I hate the legendaries, I have no urge to go for ascended stats items (although I might go for a quiver) as I don't run fractals or WvW that often, etc. Might start saving for a quiver for my ranger and possibly thief, or a foefire's essence for my guardian. Also might start learning how to be an evil capitalist pigdog and start running some TP games if I can farm up enough capital to meet my needs.

I was pondering on this just the other day while crafting. Given how many ingots you need to make trinket items, I'd say the jewellery ingots are about the size of a fingernail. How the unencumbered mind wanders

I push the envelope on some of them to see the threshold of gaining and loosing a little of money towards a lot of money to give me a good idea on my limits.
I've also tested how T6 salvaging works and Ecto salvaging works. I know people have posted their own data, but I wanted to confirm or reject it myself.
I actually blew a lot more money then I needed too; however, I always treat time as the biggest commodity. So in order to save time I had to waste more money. I'm happy with my results and hopefully this will help me stay fluid in the trading post economy.

But once you hit 80, and buy your exotics, maybe 2 or 3 sets even. Then what? Choose a look for your gear set?
Unless you want to look like a Harden-using Metapod, or a circus whore, cultural armour is out. And none of the other looks require gold to buy.
You could save for a legendary if you've recently been made unemployed and fancy working 24/7 til the monotony drives you to suicide.
Or you could get mats for ascended items if your idea of fun is running 3 of 9 instances upwards of 30 times. Mine isn't.
Ultimately gold is easy to come by. I do nothing to earn it and make around 4-5 gold a day just listing things I find on the TP or crafting something when I stumble upon 5 ectos. Finding things to use that gold on? Not easy to come by at all...

This right here is why I'm stopping for a while. Seriously, did you read this before you posted?
This is what you do in GW2?
To each their own, and if some people choose to play this game this way then more power to them. But the fact that this is even a viable way of playing at the moment is why I've uninstalled it for a month or so.

Your response is a little harsh. I'm sorry if you do not approve one of the ways I play the game. I'm big into statistics. I apply it a lot of things in life outside of games such as investing real money. Playing the trading post game is a way for me to apply statistics. I also apply it to other parts of the gameplay.
So please forgive me on how I play the game.

I've been buying a variety of items I predict will rise in price. I spend lots of time reading the official forums and recently there's talk about underwater bots, that they're farming in southsun for scales and blood which is a possible explaination to the sudden price drop of those two. That includes T5 and T6. I also bought some exotics when the market was flooded with goods again from the karka chests people got in their mail.
So now I'm doing the buy low and hold strategy. I'm waiting for the prices to go up then I'll slowly list em on the TP. I did make some bad investments. I bought 200 armored scales at 9s but they continued to drop to 6-7s each, how could I have known? Hopefully they'll go back to 10s+ so I can get some profit from it. I stocked up on several T5 mats as well.
I have been searching for a cool staff for my elementalist (my only char), had my eyes on bifrost but it's so much work for it and getting the precursor alone is really costly. Right now I plan to make either the anomaly focus or abyssal scepter, unless I find a nice staff skin I want.
