Maybe a month ago I overheard a convo on map chat someone saying how they've been collecting gems and have 22k of it. Is it even possible to get this much without exploiting stuff or having friends/guildies sending all their money so that they could all get insta rich in 6 months or something like that? How does ANet feel about all the manipulations in game's economy?

Gems used to be around 30s per 100. Which means that's around 7000s or 70g.
That's less than a set of T3 gear.

Well since you can buy gems with real money, I'd say yes. It's entirely possible that they might be some super rich person and spent all their gold on gems early on before they went up.

Or they were just lying.

It's certainly possible. It's also quite possible that person was lying and throwing out a large number for e-peen's sake.

I have a feeling at the current rate at which gem prices becoming more and more expensive i can see anet putting a cap on 100 gems to (x)gold...so you essentially cant have some wild rate like 20gems = 1 gold ..inflation is a killer

Gems were 20s/100 shortly after launch. I saved arround 5k and sold them at Halloween (too early!). A mate of mine saved 15k gems and resold them aswell on Halloween. I can imagine that some people expected the gems to rise even higher so they kept hoarding them. Oh btw, some pvp'ers win loads of paid tournaments and have a crazy amount of gems aswell.

Gems used to be ~1g for 200gems for a very long time (they were even cheaper before that but that lasted only a very short time) so 22k gems would have been around 110g which is nothing too special really. I'd imagine some of the more hardcore farmers or simply lucky guys could have gotten over 100k gems easily if they wanted to. Nothing gamebreaking here.

Just like the map convo I witnessed where one person had in excess of 4,000 gold in the bank and another in excess of 3,500. Either my eyes were playing tricks on me, or it's actually true and I have no idea how that much in-game coin was amassed. In real life or otherwise, there will always be a few folk who are way ahead of the curve though.

Gems are currently like gold in the real world. Best to invest your actual gold into them, they will only keep rising from now on.

TP playing :)
I only started recently with doing it seriously (logging in twice per day to collect & invest everything again) and I take an average of 20% profit every transaction.
Your capital rises quickly when you re-invest everything you earn every time. :)

~I bought the game 2 weeks after the release. 1 week after that i started merching stuff on the AH(flipping greens, mostly).
1 week later i turne din my profits for 10k gems, still got 5k left atm.
So yes, its very much possible if I, a player that started 2 weeks after launch, got 10k gems with not alot of effort.

If you bought 800 gems for $10 it'd cost you $275 to have 22,000 if my math is correct.

Hmm that's nice I must admit. Gratz, I only wish I was more aware of the economy here.

Yeah that's true. I was more refering to transfering 22k from gold. But yea when you put it that way it doesn't seem too hard to get.

Well, $275 is not a lot for some people. I know more than a handful of people who could make easily that much after tax on a standard day of work.

While true I'm going to guess that people making 100K+ a year are in quite the minority in GW :P Course, you don't need to make that in a day to spend that much anyhow :D

That would be about $40/hour in U.S. dollars.

Well, months ago when someone was showing off their legendary people noticed in the screen shots they had over 80,000 gems.  I suppose it's possible they blew it down to 22,000 by now, but I doubt it.  :)

You have to understand:  there is a tiny fraction of the playerbase that are playing an entirely different game than you.  For these people, 22,000 gems is chump change.  1000g is chump change.  That's how pure capitalism works:  the super rich get super richer.  And honestly, gems is still a good long-term investment as there is nearly no risk and the effort is next to zero.
