*************** Explanation if you care to read, questions further below ********************

A few preliminaries: after having a tumor removed from my spinal cord, my left hand is largely disabled which makes complex movement etc very challenging. Since agility and solid movement seem to be the key to a thief's survival, I was reluctant to start playing the class despite liking its potential. Since, however, I do now already have all other classes, I have decided to complete the group.

Currently, my roster looks like this:

Human: Warrior (80), Necro (80), Guardian (74)
Norn: Ranger (80)
Asura: Engineer (80)
Charr: Elementalist (80)
Sylvari: Mesmer (27)

I'm (by now) well aware that the Charr Ele is a huge lore break already, but I'd like to avoid this with this last class.

*************** Questions here ********************

Which race is a good pick for a thief in terms of
1. lore
2. animations
3. armor (is there even any good-looking medium armor in the game?)
4. racial skills that might support the class

I'd like to avoid Sylvari, since tbh I'm simply not warming up to the race.

Any helpful input is appreciated.

Human Female.  Human Female.  Human Female.  Human Male.

In that order.

I am not a fan of story/history, etc., so that never impacts my choices.  I go with animations and appearance.  When I log in to the game, I have this Trophy Case of characters.  What do I like to see on that screen?  Women.  Lots of them.

Human Male is okay, I was ust playing one as an alt.  Not bad, however I discovered something odd.  I use d/d and shortbow on my Human Female Thief.  D/D is my preferred choice, when travelling I spam heartseeker to travel faster.  I can spam this on Human Female.  On Human Male there is an animation tendency to interrupt the spam with an attack, which slows you down.  Odd, not good.

Asura if you wvw a lot. Any advantage to hiding always good.

This is all 100% subjective and nothing is a "proof of concept".

Like guy above me said, human is also my preference for thief.
The female medium armor definitely has a wider selection of good looking armors, where the male versions are a little more...... bland i suppose. Lots of trench coats.

Human Female Tier 3 cultural armor aka the epic underboob....other than that the medium armor that has shurikens on it's legs are perfect for the lithe ninja gamestyle.

Charr Ele? A huge lore break? Flame Legion Shaman would like a word with you.

Besides, you'll win points from me if you try to get your Thief out of the culture-destroying Assassin's Creed fashion. That's all.

Yes, that would be pretty much where magic in the legions became an issue, no?

Lol, I'll try to. Not usually displaying helmets anyways.

Thanks for the input everyone. Human female it is then.

Wow, you hot to lvl 80 way too fast.
For Thief... A Charr in the Ash legion would be good. Humans can be good thieves too if born on the streets.
I say Charr personally.

My vote is for human because it fits the lore well in my humble opinion.

That is a flippin' awesome looking sylvari. What armor? Cultural something or other? Tier 1 and 2 mixed? Dang. Makes me wish I'd rolled a sylvari now.

Be unique: Human female, it'd be groundbreaking. You get the underboob armor which you probably haven't heard of because it's really obscure, I haven't seen a single person wearing it *implodes from excess of sarcasm*

I'll just use this thread instead of making a new one.
I am currently stuck between an asura and a norn. I have a dedicated PvP thief (asura, naturally) and I will not be deleting him regardless of my choice (he's also one of my storage characters), so that does not need to be a factor in this.
The problem here is the whole instant vs. delayed gratification.  I think that a norn is appallingly bad as an agile class - he takes so much space on your screen, making it much harder to asses distances or simply see what's happening around you. Which means levelling as an asura is the way a thief should be played.
But then we get to the idea of hunting down pretty, and the norn's size is his advantage - you can actually see the pretty you obtain. The asura is just a blip on your screen.

So for the folks that went with these two options - any regrets?

Here's how I sorted out my profession/race/gender combinations;

Human: Necromancer (male), Guardian (female)
Norn: Elementalist (male)
Asura: Engineer (male), Warrior (female)
Charr: Thief (female), Mesmer (male)
Sylvari: Ranger (male)

I would like to think this is fairly balanced approach by only allowing maximum of two characters per race and making sure they are not the same gender. I have also tried to make my characters ages very different, so that I have both old and young looking characters. Some professions tend to be easier to make them look older. I'm pretty happy with my choices, and I'm curious to find out what profession and gender I'll use for the Tengu.
