I'd just assume that you two happened to be going to same way for some reason.
Was this in WvW, PvP, or Snowball Arena?

Try running in a certain direction, stealth and then directly go opposite way, you'll escape 95% of the time.

that is what i did. he might have followed any potential dots on me, however i didn't notice any dots on me when it happened. should have screen-capped it to be sure next time.

I don't suppose you had Thieves Guild up or Runes of the Ogre giving you a NPC ally? I've been followed before by NPC's allied to me following me even when in Stealth giving away my route.

i didn't have it up and indeed this is also an easy way to know which way a stealthed thief is heading.

I think thieves can stay stealthed almost 100% ( maybe Im wrong on that ).
So to counter thieves as soon as you are hit CHANGE DIRECTIONS. They will not kill most people from a distance need to backstab to be really effective.
Next drop some aoe. If you dont have that LEAVE.
Best strategy is always travel in at least 3. If a thief downs one protect and rez. Fight with numbers.
Lastly did mention if you have no aoe then leave?
Thieves are nuisance but not op. The problem is it is hard to fight someone that has alot of closing options while invisible almost 100% of the time. Most are very fragile and you need to ding them.

It wouldn't be that bad if they actually had some risk involved, but giving near perma-invis, outrageous burst and closers to a class which also has some of (if not the) best escape is absurd. Not only can they pick and choose their fights and kill easy targets before they can even react, but they can easy just pull off, vanish and run away again if the fight turns against them. It's too much in one class, especially since ANet specifically stated that they were aiming to address the balance issues which always surround stealth classes.

I am a thief. But I don't like the fragility of the backstab build so I run S/D. No I can't drop someone in three seconds but the same time a BS thief can't drop me. Roll for Initiative is the thief "get out of jail free" move. When something hits me that I can't see I roll. Then lock down the now visible thief (because he attacked to start chain) and down them in three shots because BS thieves have no health or armor.
So find your classes stun breaker and use it. And you too will laugh at BS thieves.

if you need 3 players to be safe from 1, i hardly see that as balanced.
not every class should go 1 on 1, but i should at least be allowed to react to a thief instead of being bursted down instantly.

You can go walk alone, but chances are that you will get jumped by a thief without noticing him if you do so. And if you fail to notice him, then the glasscannon(thief, probably other glasscannons as well) has a huge advantage over you and will probably kill you.

Nah bro, they will find the nearest NPC animal or white creature and start their perma invis run cycle once they can't get you.

The whole design of stealth+burst+escape is misplaced in a PvP game. It's awesome in PvE content, but it's totally out of place in PvP.

I can understand not being able do see stealth players, but when my sword meet their face, i should know that i'm hitting something because my avatar get this direct feedback from the weapon in his hands...
This could balance stealth without nerfing it.

Pets, turrets, phantasm....stuff like that.
My guess is that something was on you giving away the direction you were in.
