As of right now there are a few problems with town clothings and it would be a waste of money to even spend a copper on them atm.
-You can`t use them in combat
-Must be in town to wear them
-Designs are ugly and unattractive

Honestly, I find town clothes annoying. In Guild Wars 1 and in Guild Wars 2, I designed my main to look like the character on my avatar. A primary feature of the character is his large glasses. In Guild Wars 1, the character could wear his glasses anywhere, but in Guild Wars 2 he can only wear them in town. It's really frusterating, to be honest. "In Town" is such a puny part of the game, it's pointless to have something just for "In Town" wear. I would love for my character to have his glasses all the time. I think Arena Net should add a costume slot, like they had in Guild Wars 1, so town clothing can be worn over armor into battle. It's fantasy, after all, so why not?

i would care about it if it was more seamless, but as it is, it just gets in the way. i don't want to have to bring up my hero tab to change clothes every time i go to a city. somebody mentioned having a feature where you automatically are wearing city clothes, which would be cool except that you lose your weapons and thus can't cast swiftness on yourself whenever you want. and nobody wants to hunt down the Swiftness NPCs every time they enter a city.
I would like to point out that:
a)
you CAN wear town clothes outside of towns. I do so regularly. You simply cannot wear them in combat (which would be moronic. fighting a dragon in a pair of trousers and a cloth shirt? That might be ok for classes with magical shields but if I'm fighting some gnarly great behemoth up close I want something a bit more sturdy. Glasses I agree, could be worn with most armors. Its a fantasy game, not a 'what would happen if I took on a fire-breathing colossus with a near-impenetrable hide whilst wearing my dinner jacket' simulator)
you do not have to open your hero panel every time you wish to swap. So long as you are not in combat, you can swap at any time by assigning town clothes to a key (I chose the ; key because its right beside weapon swapping, so all my swaps keys are in the same place). Just go into the options menu by hitting ESC>options. Then click on keybinds and scroll down until you find the correct feature. Hopefully this is helpful.
I can see how people who do not rp would say town clothes are useless, but I think it adds another dimension to the game. There is room for improvement (specifically we could use more varied town clothes such as queen jennah's dress or some of the npc outfits), but its a bit unfair to call it completely useless. After all, this is ANet. They play too (as I'm sure anyone can tell if they look at Gaile Grey's wiki page with all those minis/bows >_< The woman is a legend. I would love some of her those!) and I'm quite sure they have plans for cosmetic items. A lot of players like the whole character aesthetics part of things.
