Or crafting? I figured they'd be incorporated into crafting somewhat. That was a little disappointing. Love the idea though. My Charr rocks a gangsta look with the pre release cap.
Agree. I swear i was sure( illuded) to craft town clothes with tailoring. Such a disappointment.

Haven't used it. Ever.

Can't wear costumes in combat a la Guild Wars.

It's nice for role-players and that's all it's useful for.

Kinda was a dumb idea to have town clothes, I see no point in them (unless its the seasonal costumes). Why would I want to wear some shoddy clothes in town when I just spent 100g+ on armor?

Bought 1 costume during Halloween. It looks pretty nice, but it's pointless because I have to manually switch between sets when I visit a town. I can't wear it in combat. And it doesn't help it's for 1 character only.

As of right now there are a few problems with town clothings and it would be a waste of money to even spend a copper on them atm.

-You can`t use them in combat
-Must be in town to wear them
-Designs are ugly and unattractive

I purchased several outfits in GW1 and absolutely loved them (my R/Rit in a Grenth costume... ^_^ ) I loved that they were account bound and, barring wanting to save outfits I'd spent dye on, I could delete pieces I didn't like or wasn't using and get them again later off an NPC.

I have yet to purchase any costumes, town clothes or novelty items in GW2 and I won't until the system drastically changes. Something more like GW1 would be great - clothes are wearable over armour, have special storage slots or can be stored / re-obtained from an NPC. The current system is too restrictive and inconvenient IMO.

Not at the moment, but that's more because of implementation than anything else.  There's still a serious lack of options available, and since you can't use them in combat and have to manually switch to them in towns, there is very little incentive to try the few that do exist.  It's a real shame, because I loved some of of the costumes and masks from GW1 and would love to mess with some in GW2.  Oh well...

In GW1, players asked to be able to acquire NPCs clothes.

Anet said we would be able to get them, hence town clothes. But just like mini games, it got more than partially taken out until one day they find the desire and time to fully complete this task.

The town clothes we have right now are either incredibly ugly, or too costume like.

Honestly, I find town clothes annoying. In Guild Wars 1 and in Guild Wars 2, I designed my main to look like the character on my avatar. A primary feature of the character is his large glasses. In Guild Wars 1, the character could wear his glasses anywhere, but in Guild Wars 2 he can only wear them in town. It's really frusterating, to be honest. "In Town" is such a puny part of the game, it's pointless to have something just for "In Town" wear. I would love for my character to have his glasses all the time. I think Arena Net should add a costume slot, like they had in Guild Wars 1, so town clothing can be worn over armor into battle. It's fantasy, after all, so why not?

i would care about it if it was more seamless, but as it is, it just gets in the way. i don't want to have to bring up my hero tab to change clothes every time i go to a city. somebody mentioned having a feature where you automatically are wearing city clothes, which would be cool except that you lose your weapons and thus can't cast swiftness on yourself whenever you want. and nobody wants to hunt down the Swiftness NPCs every time they enter a city.

I would like to point out that:

a) you CAN wear town clothes outside of towns. I do so regularly. You simply cannot wear them in combat (which would be moronic. fighting a dragon in a pair of trousers and a cloth shirt? That might be ok for classes with magical shields but if I'm fighting some gnarly great behemoth up close I want something a bit more sturdy. Glasses I agree, could be worn with most armors. Its a fantasy game, not a 'what would happen if I took on a fire-breathing colossus with a near-impenetrable hide whilst wearing my dinner jacket' simulator)

B) you do not have to open your hero panel every time you wish to swap. So long as you are not in combat, you can swap at any time by assigning town clothes to a key (I chose the ; key because its right beside weapon swapping, so all my swaps keys are in the same place). Just go into the options menu by hitting ESC>options. Then click on keybinds and scroll down until you find the correct feature. Hopefully this is helpful.

I can see how people who do not rp would say town clothes are useless, but I think it adds another dimension to the game. There is room for improvement (specifically we could use more varied town clothes such as queen jennah's dress or some of the npc outfits), but its a bit unfair to call it completely useless. After all, this is ANet. They play too (as I'm sure anyone can tell if they look at Gaile Grey's wiki page with all those minis/bows >_< The woman is a legend. I would love some of her those!) and I'm quite sure they have plans for cosmetic items. A lot of players like the whole character aesthetics part of things.

Just one quick note - there is a way you can wear town clothes in combat.  If you pick up a conjured weapon, you can fight with all of its skills and take damage and you town clothes will not switch to your armor.  Of course, you don't want to be in a very high area when you do this.

1)  There is no bank tab for unlocked town clothes.  If I have no place to store it, then I won't use it.

2)  There is no reasonable PvE method of acquisition.  There should be a crafting line for this, drops from the hidden chests around the world, and karma merchants scattered through the world.

3)  There isn't nearly enough selection.

4)  I'd love to see town-clothes with associated cantrip skills.  Extra dance animations, or emotes would be great.

I'll buy them when I can use them in combat, it would defeat the whole meaning of "town clothes" true, but they'll also sell more it would kinda be a win-win for both Anet and players.

I bought every costume in Guild Wars 1 and none of Guild Wars 2. Plus I have no plans to ever buy any unless they change how they are implemented. 1) can wear in combat. I am rarely in town except for the end of a session when I am doing inventory or some crafting. For that reason town only clothes are useless for me. 2) INVENTORY! A NPC needs to be able to hold our costumes for us rather than either keeping it on a toon. When you buy costumes you have to remove the town clothes it came with and then either delete them or put them in the bank or on a mule. 3) only one toon at a time can wear a costume. Again, an NPC needs to hold them so multiple toons can wear the same costume. In Guild Wars 1, for the equivalent price you could use the same outfit on all your toons at the same time. Here only one at a time can use a costume.  4) ease of use. In Guild Wars 1, you could set the costume to auto display in town or not as you wished. Set it and forget it, it automatically toggled on or off. I never use even the default town clothes because I don't even remember them. Plus, imo, the default ones are ugly.

TL:DR
The only positive thing about town clothes in this game is that it has saved me money since I won't buy them.
