I figured I'd look for some MF gear on the TP and now I have no idea how to actually search for it. As far as I understand, I should be looking at lvl 80 rare gear (or should I be looking at sub-80 gear also?) to get all the MF benefits at only a fraction of the price of exotics. I am looking at MF gear for all 3 class groups - soldiers, adventurers and scholars.

Any tips on what I should be looking at?

high level gear with magic find will have the prefix "explorer's".  Subsequently, explorer's insignias can be used to craft MF gear.  Dunno if there are any karma vendors that sell the +3% MF gear.

also, Traveller runes and, consequently,  the Traveller suffix on armor.

Pirate runes give Magic Find as well, they are also cheaper than Traveler's because they can be crafted with gossamer & platinum doubloons
5 Superior Pirate's and 1 Superior Traveler's rune gives you the max Magic Find from runes.

Opal accessories also give good magic find. The armor pieces themselves actually don't give all that much MF (only 3% per piece), so it might be beneficial to use a set with regular attributes of your liking + the MF runes, unless you really want absolute max MF.

Finally, the sigil of luck also gives 15% MF when fully charged.
