Yesterday, I ran AC story for the first time (1st dungeon ever on a mesmer, 2nd time overall), and I was dying like crazy. There were 2 guardians and a warrior along for the ride, and everyone was new as far as I knew (a warrior and guardian were only level 37 and 51, I and my guardian buddy, who never ran a dungeon before, were 80). The entire dungeon was actually ok until the lovers. Then everything just fell apart. I couldn't stay alive longer than approximately 45 seconds. If it weren't for my guardian friend rezzing me all the time, I swear I would have broken every piece of my armor.

Now, it doesn't concern me that I died a lot, as there were only 4 of us, and it was pretty clear that everyone was new at this (the warrior and guardian actually went down more than I did before we got to the lovers, probably because of lack of traits and level 80 armor). I'm disturbed mainly by the fact that I went down twice as much as everyone else did. I know the lovers are not the hardest bosses ever, so what can I do to improve myself as a mesmer? I know it is not a class but a player deficiency.

I run a hybrid support/shatter build 0/20/0/20/30 with staff and sword/focus. I tried a bit of mantra support, phantasmal defender, null field, etc. Feedback didn't seem to do anything at all. I saw a few videos on youtube where there was a lot of hiding behind the torch sconces, but the guys I played with didn't have to do that to stay alive, even when the lovers were bunched together. I ran out of dodges when those little illusions kept attacking me, and my illusions didn't stay alive long enough to distort, and 1 sec with illusionary persona was often not long enough when chaos storms and lightning balls were cast on me several times in a row. It seemed every time I picked up a boulder they cast chaos storm on me in the middle of my throw. Three ticks of chaos storm, and I was at 300-400 health.

Any advice?

Just a quick note that might help you. Chaos shield really is a big boon (pun intened) when it comes to living, and you can have huge up time in in. The #2 staff skill and the #2 sword skill both trigger it when you are in chaos field (#5 staff skill), Null Field or Time warp. Also Chaos shield itself can be cast pretty much any time, even when you are on your back. The #2 staff skill can be used alot more ofthen then other skills as well.

Maximising the uptime of chaos shield when you are getting hit will help you live alot longer. (Yes not getting hit helps alot too :) )

When it come to dungeon (including low level fractal, but not the high level), your build don't make a lot of difference. I don't say that some build won't help you, its just that knowing the dungeon, the trick to go around some bad situation, the bosses attack animation, etc will give you such a boost in your overal performance vs a good build.

I don't know enough the Mesmer (mine is only level 42) to say that your build is good, ok or bad. But, don't really worry about the story. You can never do it if you want, and a motivated person will probably never do it more that 5-8 times (if he do 8 characters). Focus more on the explorable mode to learn how to do it easily. My first time on AC path 1, my party (which was a guild one with voice chat) was wipe all several times and it took use like 1-2 hours. We didn't even finished the third path. But now, we do all the three path in 45min even with low level character and incomplete build. Dungeon are all about knowledge.

Knowledge of dungeon always helps. If your a fresh 80 working on gear its good to bias your traits to increase you phantasm damage. Later when your gear is good you cab bias traits for better shatters. I run 20/20/0/0/30. In tougher content youll likely keep your distance more since bosses can put you down quick. And I think some toughness and vitality helps. Nothing worse than a group of glass cannons and you constant resing

AC Story - Stones are you best friend (nearly perma KD on enemies, especially bosses).

in the Lovers' Crypt, KD one of them and take down the other, then finish up the one you were stoning.

Other than this, what the guys before me said. Knowledge (of dungeons) is power.

the lovers?

bring 4 boulders, 2 people stand on opposite sides of each other with the boss(es) in the middle, chain knockdowns with boulders

repeat for Adelbern

have fun

you're probably having trouble because their phantasms do a ton of damage and the confusion is especially hurtful, just chain boulder them, any other way is just self-torture
