I think the writers have taken in consideration the amount of effort ArenaNet has put in to try and make GW2 standout among the other MMOs without losing too much of what is expected of the genre. I believe despite it's flaws, GW2 has pushed the genre forward. jumping puzzles, restructured skill bar, shared loot, and dynamic events in one game is a lot. I know we've seen these mechanics in other games, but not in one game. ArenaNet is pulling in ideas from other genres to make GW2 more appealing to a wider audience. I think they done that very well and deserve the praise they get for it.

As long as we're talking PC exclusives, I think GW2 handily has it. It's basically that, panda-land, diablo 3, and a bunch of decent indie titles that won't even be considered. Everything else is console port city.

Congrats to Arena Net.  In terms of value, Guild Wars 2 is the best $60 I spent in all of 2012.

Congratz to Anet!

And yes for me personal it's the best game of the year too, even with all the bugs and minor stuff I don't like. :)

 I completely disagree. It looks different... yeah. But the few pros it has are heavily outweighed by its many major flaws. GW2 doesn't deserve GOTY, instead it should be awarded... greatest "disappointment of the year."

Straight-up biased GOTY.. no doubt about it.

EDIT: I still play the game, but there's no reason it should top the other four. Err.. well I haven't played the Walking Dead series, but the other three were excellent at release..except for Mass Effect 3's use of the Origin client.

Unexpected, but well deserved in my opinion. Congratulations, Arenanet :)

Both this and Time magazine's game of the year? Not bad publicity ;)

Well deserved, for me it IS Game of the Year any way for the simple fact that it's been my most anticipated, the one I had most fun with and the one I played the most. That still counts for something in my book. ;)

I hope it gets a lot more credit, as for all the praise it gets - other developers will crane their necks around and try to snatch little tidbits of it to improve their own game which can only be a good thing. If the next MMO builds upon the great ideas and implementions of Guild Wars 2, pouring their own ones in it as well - it can only be for the better.

Congrats, ANet!

as much as i dislike some of Anet's doing and their direction of the game now, this is the only mmo that actually engaged me. never seen an mmo like this before(previously i played mmos like those korean grindfest, bore as hell!)
I dare say this game beat some of my single player and jrpgs too.

Toast to arena net because it is a success
