This is how my fights mainly go : I let my pet run in and i stand back with my short bow and auto attack. The short bow also has a lack of skills that hit mobs, most attack single targets. And if i run in with my Greatsword/ Sword i die because i'm too squishy, Even when i let my pet tank it. Help appreciated!

Try using an Axe or a Sigil of Fire on the Shortbow and the Piercing Arrows trait. Traps help a lot too with groups of mobs.

I understand.  A change of weapons or pets may help break the monotony.  Personally I run longbow and axe/horn with bear, but I recently switched to longbow/greatsword with birds to change the pace.  I'm not one to min/max; I just go with what's fun for me to keep the game interesting.  If nothing else, you can level an alt with a different profession and maybe a different race.

Maybe try using traps at melee? I use sword/torch and 2 trap utilities. That gives me up to 3 AOEs to use. Plus I drop healing spring to help keep me alive.

I am finding my Ranger rather lackluster too. She doesn't do the damage my Warrior can put out, she doesn't have the healing and buffing of my Guardian or the cool utility that my Mesmer packs. It's quite frustrating and so I am happy that ArenaNet will revisit the class in the future!

My main is a ranger and the class is not boring, you just need to learn how to play the class, mix things up a bit and have fun.

I agree. If you are doing just normal PvE you need to keep a warhorn on you. The speed boost is crazy nice. I only usually run bears whilst doing dungeons. Other than that I like the snow owl, and the wolf..fear is nice. Stalker gives you might so thats nice as well. I ran shortbow/axe+horn for the majority of my time. Axe had fire rune so aoe was pretty nice. GS is really really fun to play with it just doesnt do too much damage. But when you're playing alone if you wanna go and map things fast. GS/Axe+Horn is a nice combo. Lots of getting around from place to place faster.

It's fun. just give it some time.

for one if you go in with the sword I highly suggest building heavier into tank and going BM. Your pet will put out amazing damage numbers and can sustain the assault while you focus on healing and buffing your "two" man team. And yes it isn't going to be the amazing uber leet numbers of warrior and thief... but I spend far more time rezzing said "super l33t" warriors and thievies.

I'll take my longer slug fests as I take on 7+ mobs at a go and champs single handidly any day over "woooh yay a big number... awww I died... again"

The more you play the ranger like you are playing two characters (we have 4 controls for pet) and the more you focus on keeping "both" characters alive, the more interesting the class becomes. I am constantly testing the limits of my build to see just how much trouble I can get into and back out of.. and the key, without stealthing.

The axe/torch combo is a nice ranged aoe attack.  The #1 and #2 attacks are aoe.  The torch #5 skill is a pbaoe (point blank area of effect)  but even if you're fighting the mobs at ranged... you do the torch #5, you're standing in the fire, it's a fire combo field, and now all the axes you throw also have a chance to do burning damage.

All the suggestions from posters here are good ones.  Mixing up your build, trying different builds, keeps it exciting and you learn a lot more about the class doing that.  I realize this is a pve section of the forum, but let me suggest two things

1.  try taking your ranger to heart of the mists, even if you don't actually do any pvp, you can try many different builds and weapons just against the dummies/robots that are there to beat up.

and

2.  My ranger could never be boring since I go out to WvW pretty often.  Even solo... there is nothing more exhilarating than a one on one fight against an enemy.  Yeah you won't find that every 10 minutes or anything.  I was out there this morning working on world completion, so I was avoiding enemies and fights.... yet an enemy ranger decided to chase me.  I ran till we were well out of range of his keep.  Turned around and we bore down on each other, and went at it.  It was very fun and exciting.

I've gone from a Beastmaster Traited Ranger to a trap AOE ranger for farming....Stopped using bears....and focusing on drakes....very fun to take down groups of Orrian Risen....

I doubt i'll play anything other than axe /warhorn for a while.....but for bows I use long bow for aoe....shortbow when i want more flanking...

And how's that working out? I was actually thinking of switching from a trap spec to more of a bunker setup with 30 wilderness survival and 30 beast mastery, for bark skin and natural healing respectively. Throw in signet of the wild for more passive regeneration, and use cats and/or birds for damage. Maybe top off the regeneration with runes of dwayna.I'd probably miss the ability to decimate packs of trash mobs though.

It's really good for what is intended for...fast aoe damage to tag and loot mobs before every other farmer kills them.....works very well in the Tixx events....so I'm thinking I'll do better in dungeons..(I've waited to do dungeons as my pets die too fast..)
