I recently got my main guardian to level 80 and am starting an alt with my best friend. I'm between elementalist and mesmer. He plays a necromancer. I played mesmer to 15 with him but since he's gone for the vacation idk whether to make a new elementalist to 15 and then farm gold on my main, or just farm gold until he gets back to play my mesmer. Any suggestions?

Hmm, Mesmer is not really fun until you unlock traits and get decently gear. Ele is fun in the beginning and can be quite a struggle later if you are new to the profession because of the squishiness and difficulty (mob gets faster -> harder to land skills, mob get more hp and cannot be burst downed easily).

I would recommend sticking with mesmer for now since if you play ele you might get a false sense of excitement and probably dissapointed later. You can always make a third toon :P

As in PvP, both are fun but Mesmer is a little easier to be effective

If you are like me and can't stand minion-bombing mechanic, go elementalist.
If you hate stance dancing, I'd suggest going mesmer.

I have an 80 mesmer and a 20 ele (i mostly play pvp on this char)

ele is more fun because the gameplay is very "fast and furious", reminds me of fire mage in WoW. you do decent damage and have good survivabilty, but if you mess up at any time, then you are pretty much dead. this class has quite a steep learning curve though, but once you learn it becomes incredibly fun.

mesmer is also quite fun to play although it does not take as much skill as ele. you are quite tanky, so it is much more forgiving if you mess up since you can just stealth away from danger, or shatter F4 to become immune. i quite liked how there were soooo many viable builds for the mesmer, so it can be quite fun exploring all the options and finding a build that suits your playstyle.

they are both amazing & fun classes, but its just whatever 'style' you prefer, because they both have the same level of DPS

exciting ADHD caffeine frenzy 'edge of your seat' style = elementalist
slower, tankier and extremely disruptive/annoying for your enemies = mesmer

also, ele has more healing spells, whereas the mesmer has more stun/daze spells. both can give good support to your team.

I had a blast leveling both of them. Mesmers can be boring from 20-40 because not much action there but once you get that master trait book it gets more fun.
My main is Ele so I don't actually remember leveling him as I played him all though BWE's and from release.

I will never like Mesmers as much as I like Elementalists, but both are very fun in a unique way. And Ele's aren't squishy, contrary to people's opinion, You just need to set it up properly while all you gotta do for Mesmers is to go full Berserk because their auto doesn't dealmuch damage and main source of damage is though phantasms or shatter.

IMO I'd go for Ele but I can see the appeal mesmers have.

My main is an Elementalist while I have a Mesmer at 65 currently (and a few other 80s too.) As this is in the PVP section and you're talking about levelling I assume this is a WvW related question. The answer is probably: Elementalist is better for a solo player, Mesmer brings awesome group utility if you're running with a guild. Mesmers in WvW really revolve around stealth based tricks and portal based tricks, both of which are very useful but in terms of straight damage in zerg-on-zerg they can be a bit lacking (as illusions can die to AOEs before getting to do anything.) At level 15, in particular, Mesmers are close to useless in WvW as you need to be 30-50 before you can start doing the fun stuff with them. In contrast, an Elementalist at 15 can run staff quite effectively in a zerg and then can use Air Focus for lots of great tricks. At higher levels Elementalists can make great zerg breakers but I think you'd want to be at least 60 before trying that...
