Why don't Ranger's spirits lay down combo fields?

Adding combo field component to the spirit skills would add more interesting gameplay for rangers and since their arrows are projectiles they can benefit from them anyway

I both like and dislike this. I like it because combo fields are always nice and will make many of the spirit actives much more appealing than they are currently.
Now why I dislike. They will have to do something to increase spirit survivability. I tell all the groups I run dungeons with to not stand by my spirits. I'll drop them toward the back and use them primarily for the passives which are pretty nice, but standing near them is just asking for your spirits to get nuked. laying combo fields would encourage this. They would need to up the toughness vitality, give them permanent protection, anything to increase survivability really before this would be a truly useful thing.

Yes! I agree with you completely. Ether increase their range of prot (like in gw1) to maybe 2000/2500 range or add more toughness/vitality even thought this might not happen because I actually find spirits to be weak versions of minions (and those are bad aswell) since you can trait them to follow you.

Having spirits always follow you would also let you guide them where they could be useful to your team and back off in danger.

I've actually come to be really wary of the spirits following everywhere. Especially since I melee. I don't wan't them breathing down my back, I would rather them be hugging a wall. Being on top of me constantly leaves them vulnerable to AoE which was originally being flung my way.
If there was a way to make them follow me and then another command to let me park them, I'd be all over that. The passive range is epic, it covers most dungeons rooms with ease. the active... not so much. If it could lay down that epic of a field without having to be on top of me... everybody would love me.

That way we can still park our spirits for the passive, gain combo fields for our bros and have some sort of melee-range aoe type effect based on w/e we would want it for as well as having a little baby spirit field trip following us around on our merry adventures.
