So GW2 is completely dead eh? You can see it in these forums, remember how active Guildwarsguru still was 7 years after release of GuildWars?

Rather unfair comparison.

1: GW1 didn't have an official forum.
2: Reddit wasn't big back then.
3: GW2guru is more or less flooded with people disliking the game, so those of us that likes it have moved to other places instead.

To be fair, the amount of sPvP players ingame give a better picture then forums. And anets reactions of course.

One good thing about the lack of competitive PvP.
I bought the game for a cheap two month after release from a PvP kind of player that was disappointed with the PvP :D

By the way: custom games were added some time ago, and passwords can be added.

It became worse...

On the plus side we got;
  • Ready checker before the match
  • Map preference pick (3 maps per round)
  • Gold rewards for those who care about it
  • Vanity rewards that you would otherwise do stuff like Silverwastes for if you care about it

Downsides:
  • Leaderboard went from bad, to awful to literally garbage. It is disabled now
  • SoloQ has been removed
  • Relating to the previous note; this leads to Solo players facing multiple grouped people (also due to a small community)
  • Ranks got made obsolete because it "was too hard to get to 80"
  • No prestige in titles
  • Unlike the previous system (pre april 15th 2014) skins do not indicate skill
  • Need to stay in Heart of the Mists looking at a counter for almost 10 minutes (on average) if you que up
  • The new conquest maps that have been introduced are not considered skill based as gimmicky builds prevail
  • Immobilize bug kills more than people do
  • Ingame generated tournaments are gone
  • To actually participate in a tournament means going to ESL/Academy Gaming and is barely to never promoted within the game
  • AFK-ing is not punished
  • Because of the small community, MMR might feel like it is not working
  • No spectator in non-existant tournament matches because putting a delay on the broadcast is impossible (avoiding cheating)
Basically, if you are going to PvP for the first time - you are gonna have a blast. You are going to earn ranks, get some gold while mastering your favourite profession(s), get titles... and after that you are done. Unless you are willing to dedicate yourself to put enough time in the game to get as good as people who mastered the game 3 years ago, there is no reason to stay as there is no competitive progression.

So though it pains me to say, because I really quite enjoy(ed) PvP for what it is; stay away from it if you are competitive. I started late, but not late enough to realize the so called "Tip of the Iceberg" was not a reference to the iceberg in the Titanic, but a complete retelling of the tale of a sinking ship. That'll break in two as well. I so wish that there was a similar game with an actual competitive progression system so that Anet would finally get their heads out of the dirt and get the praise they (rightfully) deserve for their combat system within an MMO.

It is a shame that a company that did PvP so well at one time has fallen so far. RIP Guild Wars.

New keep assault styled game mode similar to old school GvG (I'd say on a smaller scale, but people like to forget that GvG in GW1 was only an 8v8 game mode, so its not on a smaller scale) coming soon, as well as team death-match style arenas with custom built battle fields coming as part of the Guild Hall system in the expansion.

Do not take my comment wrong though, I think Conquest could be really popular amongst other gamemodes when they are implemented. It does invite to a decent amount of strategy, and the combat is absolutely stunning and arguably the best I have seen and played to this day. Hereis a good video from Helseth breaking down a match from his PoV as a top-tier player. You can clearly hear and see there is an extreme amount of competitive experience, and really interesting plays that are being brought out. It is way faster paced than the previous itteration of Guild Wars PvP, sure, but the level of strategic gameplay is stunning.

However, within the game itself, you are not challenged to be competitive. You have no in game representation of you getting better (if you lose, you still get your rewards) and this is ruining the experience for those competitively minded but not seasoned professionals.
This is also why I said a new player would have a blast - if you are new you got things to work for such as Ranks or the abysmally easy to obtain Glorious Armour set - but after that you have literally nothing. Without a competitive infrastructure ingame to measure your skills, this game will sadly never become truly a good competitive game. Combine it with the fact that queing up is literally a drag since you need to stay in Heart of the Mists if you qued up, well, why would you even bother?

It is however very personal to me. I rushed quite hard to become better on every profession possible (because I like it, and it avoids crying about said professions), but as if I reached a cliff, I am staring in an abyss of nothingness since there is no progression for me personally anymore, despite me hungering for more competition. Anet's system is a blessing and a sin, for it is the best I played. And thanks to it being the best, I cannot find myself to enjoy other competitive games as much.

Maybe Stronghold or the guild Arenas will change things. Who knows if the Leaderboards will work again. I hope so, but for now it is at an all time low, and I do not say this to spite Arenanet - I say this because I feel this way after being disappointed for the lack of a competitive infrastructure.
