How can we know that Side Strike (trait) works?

How can we know that Side Strike (trait) works? Does it really grant +7% critical chance while flanking? Could arenanet be making a fool of us once more?

Maybe you could try going into the mists where the dummy golems are, hit one from the front a few couple o thousand times, then compare with another couple o thousand times from the side.
