Meh. It did very little to distract from the huge glaring issues the base game has. I couldn't even get a single person I knew that previously played to come back and try out Wintersday. Not sure what kind of future GW2 has at this rate.

'Meh' is a good summary for me.

I can't really put my finger on it... I just remember having so much more fun with events in GW1 than in GW2... I certainly appreciate all the content they added for the event: the bell choir, PvP, jumping puzzles, etc, but there is just a dull feeling to all of it. I had put the game down for a little over a month because of school and because I was one of those "bored" people, but I came back just for Wintersday to try it out... My excitement to try it out was short lived. I tried everything; got all the Wintersday titles, have all the new minis, several of each skin, endless tonics, etc, etc, but I remember in GW1 just wanting more than just that, but here I have no desire to do any more.

I dunno, oh well. I'll keep coming back for events and such and poke my head around a little here and there just so I am up to date and have everything I can in the game (I'm one of those collectors/completionists) but that's really it.

I've seen a lot of new players starting the game in the last few days, a lot of people getting it as a Christmas present (B2P MMO, it's a great gift).

I think starting out with Wintersday could be a little bit "late to the party" feeling, but I enjoyed the events.   The flying workshop and all that, well thought out and fun.

It's not a "blow your mind with awesomeness" kind of thing, but I don't think we'll see that kind of thing until the first expansion(s).  Right now, I'm hoping the brunt force of their creative juices are now being turned towards WvW changes in February.

No.
Art: i saw way better. No doubt they are good artists, and the game is pretty well done about graphic, but honestly far miles from the best in the entire game industry.

Winters wonderland: if even me can manage a daily farm of the chest, i guess is quite easier than halloween and pretty doable yes.
If wasn't for the minimal interest on the chest to get some random boosters for free, i wouldn't repeat it anymore at all, for sure.

Bell choir: not bad, pretty manageable. Not everyone is able to stand the speed at the end, expecially who never played guitar hero , nor so much coordinated for this kind of gameplay. Not exactly the best idea ever but ye, ach is doable after all. Ach done, moved out.

Sownball mayhem: i guess you didn't experienced lots parties where other players attempting to get the achievement, was running near you waiting you die killed by enemies, and steal your box to run to the base. Fun? I doubt.

Rest, as you wrote, not that much great.

To be honest, i didn't find this wintersday fun at all, just a task for achivements and when done, log off.

I really don't know where you saw "so many new players". Did you do a live survey maybe?
Or maybe you're right, could be the reason during this festivity i met so much junk online with disturbed attitude. Or maybe was the same junk back for wintersday and logoff, and you assumed they was new?

The good:
I absolutely love the griffon tonic/mini.
I enjoyed some of the Tixx's dungeon's writing - it wasn't OMD! funny, but it's still stupid enough to be enjoyable.
2 15-slot bags!

The bad:
The mini-games didn't interest me enough to get over my dislike of them to even try them.
The rewards are absolutely appalling. It's very D3-before-1.0.5. And there's a reason why I stopped playing D3 and only came back after 1.0.5 happened. And it's not just the dropped ones - I did a repeat of Tixx's dungeon, helping a friend, and there was no XP reward at the end.
Unwrapping the presents was an exercise in frustration. You don't get a gift or you get swarmed by foes that are obscenely hard to deal with as a character of equal level.
Tixx's dungeon was shitty.
Used the Mystic Forge for the first time (since I needed to craft the mini/tonic in it) and the RNG connected with it is one of the most dumb things in the game. Seriously, * you.

Basically, A.Net did the flavour very nicely (as they always do!), but the gameplay of Wintersday, the same as the rest of the game, is lacking to being downright unappealing.
A Wintersday fitting of GW2.

When I read the words "tower defense", I immediately remember why I don't play GW2.

They lied about being different...

With that said, it sounds like everything was enjoyable, but needed a hug and some chicken soup to feel all warm and fuzzy again.

I enjoyed Wintersday, was in a guild team every night for the Tixx' event, spent 3+ hours trying to do the jumping puzzle :surprised:
had never played guitar hero.. so the bell choir were interesting! AND I hardly saw any bugs!

There will always be complainers about anything Anet does, but I think they pulled Wintersday off fantastically.

Art
Very nice, especially the snow covered LA. I just like snow covered areas, like the Shiverpeaks! If Hoelbrak wasn't so unhomely and uncozy I'd definitely make it my home capital.

Winter Wonderland
The jumping puzzle was fun, I'm really bad at it but after 100 tries I managed to do it. After that it was easier and finished it a few more times. It was fun, for me it was a nice challenge.

Bell Choir
Haven't really tried it. It wasn't very intuitive.

Snowball Mayhem
Haven't tried it.

Open-world content
Well, in the past ANet did better than presents with - basically - tokens to get some candy weapons. I don't really see the need to let them spawn a big group of deadly toys that are impossible to kill for an equal level character. Very poorly done, perhaps the worst part of Wintersday. And also: the new exotic "giver" gear really has worthless stats. +1% boon when you have food that gives +20%? But I absolutely love the wand.

Toymaker Tixx dungeons
Not really challenging but the mini-pets were very nice! I found them quite enjoyable. Especially as the skirtt were more annoying than really dangerous and you could paint them into dolls ^_^

Toypocalypse
Tried once and got it, not very exciting.

All in all
I thought it was an ok Wintersday event. A fun jumping puzzle, free minipets and a few wand skins for free, who am I to complain?

ART
Very beautiful. Wish there were more snow in other major cities but Lion's Arch was done perfectly.

Winter Wonderland
Was very good jumping puzzle. Almost no stress like we ahd in Mad King's Clocktower. Also love the part of having daily rewards so people can do it every day and still get nice rewards.

Bell Choir
This was the best part for me. Reminded me of an old game I used to play as a kid before all of these mmo's came to life. Very cool game.

Snowball Mayhem
Mayhem in the Market, anyone?
I liked this one. Didn't play much after I got the achievements but with a good team it was fun. I also with these pvp stuff would be grouped with different people, Inexperienced and Experienced because there were quite a few times people started raging on someone who played it for the first time. Which is uncool but I do understand.

Open-world Content
I didn't  like this mostly from those Evil Princess Dolls! They were a bit OP on characters who aren't build up hard. I died every time when I went with a low-lvl characters. I do kill them because they have a greater chance in dropping more presents, but after few lessons learned I just stopped trying to kill any Evil Dolls and just go get the present and run away. Aside from them, presents were quite cool stuff (liked the beginning where there were only Skritts :D)

Toymaker Tixx dungeons
They were fun and great. They were very similar so I couldn't farm them long. Farmed the first 2 dungeons 5+ times but later I just figured out not worth it except doing it for the frame and the 5 small gifts.

Toypocalypse
Before they changed it was very terrible. Couldn't even get to a party would could survive wave 5. After they changed it to 1 Dolyak is enough I actually found a party where all the Dolyaks survived... the irony right?

End-chest rewards
Very cool rewards. Backpack not as cool as the Flaming Book but still cool. Not sure if many precursors dropped. I was only down because I didn't get one, hehe but still very cool rewards. Not sure where to pace those pvp banners but hey, free pvp backpack is cool too ^^

Gem store content
I just loved it. If I had won the lottery or something I would've spent it all there which is unfair since the skins are great. Staff skin is one of the best non-legendary ones and the GS is cool too. Wintersday gifts were kinda uncool for me because I had to spend like 3200 gems just to get the Festivooo spending over 40G just to convert to gemsat their most highest rate. I know bad decision but I just had to have that QUAGGAN! :D
Adding the minis for 350gems seem ok for m, for those who want them all. Not me, I'll probably burn that Princess Doll Frame to ashes.
Wintersday town-clothing are amasing! I loved every piece of it!

All in all
Was very fun but it kinda lasts too long and nothing to farm except the open-world presents. If only there was a way to farm those stuffings for a 3rd mini because paying 3G+ for a  green mini... meeeh.

  • I also love the Griffon Tonic/Mini as early mentioned.
  • I found the Jumping Puzzle amusing.
  • I used the Mystic Forge more than ever to gain the Griffon tonic/mini. It was fun but I guess too expensive for my liking.
  • I liked the concept of random presents at world but players who opent and kept going to next while leaving foes of previous present behind for other players was a bit..... naughty.
  • I liked the first impression of Tixx's dungeon but then the "recycling" on other daily Tixx's dungeons started so that left me a bit cold. It was fun and different tho don't get me wrong.
  • The achievements of special event's tab left me a bit cold too when I am thinking back to Halloween achievements where all the action could be done fast and easy I find Wintersday achievements a bit more challenging and therefore maybe not too "arsed" to do those this time even I like having all done.
All in all I like how Anet puts effort to this kind of things. Of course you can assume there's couple bugs included always when new content arrives but as far as I have heard nothing was game breaking and no one couldn't sleep cause of couple bugs. The game has no monthly fees and I think Anet is putting a lot of their time to Events like these when no one forces them to do so I appreacite all the effort what's been put in all of this. Thank you Anet.

I think my only problem with Wintersday is the non-Tixx minis. I really wish ANet would just sell them in the Gem Shop, like they did the Halloween ones. I'll pay, hmm maybe, $10 or so for the set. I might even buy it twice to get Foostivoo. But having it as a RNG? Pfft, my mama didn't raise no fool! However, she did raise someone who really wanted those minis.

I enjoyed the art style more than Halloween's but I felt that Halloween was the better of the two. It wasn't a bad update and the rewards were quite nice but I preferred the Halloween minigames and JP.

Art: Great, really. They have shown lately that their game is able to support an amazing scenery (FotM and Southsun Cove look great as well). Too bad we will just return to our niches as there is no point visiting 98% of it.

Bell Choir: Fun, especially if you don't do it alone. Seriously, try it.

The rest: Decent. Open world content should have been more interesting, the dungeon shouldn't have been the same stuff every day, but it was an improvement compared to halloween.

Don't get your hopes up; a little noticed interview (anet dev was the one to even point it out on the official forums) covered what they're looking to tackle as far as WvW changes. The list was short, and worse, was dominated by several issues they're openly not addressing. Something about the scoring system was the most noteworthy change, but they stated one week matches will continue, transfers will no longer be free, and promised yet again that culling will be fixed.

Basically, lower your expectations now or prepared to be disappointed.

At this point I think they should just stop with these holiday events and bring out some real content that addresses issues in the game. While they are nice, I'd rather get some core gameplay fixes, the things that keep you playing for more than just a week.

sPvP and WvW need some attention asap.

There should be no more holiday stuff for a while; unless they are going to find excuses to bring Canthan New Year's into things (Chinese New Year).

We have had the two big holidays, and we've had a kinda "test bed" for expanded content (that has been a modest failure).

PvE expansions are going to have to be more comprehensive and more than EVEN MORE aquatic-themed level 80 areas.

The best thing they can do right now is address WvW (I can't speak to SPvP, but they seem unsatisfied as well).

I liked Halloween better. Having a centralized hub where you could enter the Labyrinth, the Tower and the PvP arenas was much much better than just cramming it into Lion's Arch. The story evolved much better throughout Halloween too in my opinion.

Never been interested in these kind of events in any MMO, there is nothing to make me change my mind here.

Not enough to bring me back to the game.

I already quit the game and came back to take a look at the second day of the event.
Nice artwork, but it's the usual big checklist of to-do things before going back to the same old, trite content.

So once again, nothing new. Nothing remotely close to the revolutionary, groundbreaking content we've been promised.
Also, many technical flaws are still there, plaguing the game from the foundations.

I'd like to see more bug-fixing and less pretty holiday packages.

To be honest WD was not only sort of a disappointment for me (Halloweed was much, much better imo) but the update screwed up my client and I started getting CTDs, needed a full reinstall to get GW2 back to playable.
Too childish/cheesy perhaps, and Tixx felt very fetchy fetchy.
Let alone the huge lag in LA due to all the cluttered gifts.
