So thinking of getting a laptop so that I can play this game (desktop not an option).

Acer Aspire V3-571G-6407 15.6-Inch
Windows 8
Intel Core i5 3210M 2.5 GHz (3 MB Cache)
4 GB SDRAM
500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
15.6-Inch Screen
NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M
1366 x 768 pixels

I think the RPM is lower than recommended(?), but honestly I don't mind waiting 5 seconds longer on load screens, if that's the only drawback. This laptop would exclusively be used for gaming since I use something else for school/work so I won't be doing anything crazy like running 20 programs at once and multi-tasking.

Basically, how will it fair for GW2?

So then I'm guessing it'll be able to run on low based on the site, but it doesn't say anything about medium settings. What it be able to do medium fairly well?

I know that the game also depends on CPU so I was hoping that the i5 processor would help achieve this setting?

It should do medium or a mix of medium-high alright in PvE (minus zergs). Note that the game is also quite CPU dependent and that an i5 might not perform as well as the test system used by notebookcheck (i7-3720qm).

Note that the mobile i5s are only dual-cores (in this case, with HT). Many people assume they are quads - which suits Intel's marketing just fine, but....

Dont know, my i5 works great in PvE. Sandy Bridge second gen.
WvW however ... not terrible, but when you get more than 20+ players in front of you, it's hell. ~15FPS and less.

Thanks for all the input. I suppose for WvW I'll just have to preemptively make everything at its lowest, which I am fine with doing that.

Just curious then, but for the WvW events, what kind of CPU and GPU would you need to really perform well in WvW? Something like i-7 and a high-end GPU? Like what kind of GPU?

If you want highish settings, an i7-3630qm (ideally a 3940xm) and a GTX680m or HD7970m are your best bet. Yes, the CPU makes that much of a difference, with a 680m on best appearance preset, it takes a quad core to go over 30fps and even a 3840qm will give better performance over a 3740qm.

EDIT: At 1920x1080 that is, lower resolutions will require less from your CPU.

Thanks for explaining! Makes sense now.

And I can't get a desktop because there isn't really any room in my apartment to put it (NYC) and I don't have a desk.

I ended up getting a different, but very similar laptop (it has GT 635m instead of 630 graphic card). Thanks for all the info and input!
