Really don't know why they bothered with all those different kits when there's really only a need for two of them - the crude one and the black lion one. If you NEED the rune/sigil in it, the mystic salvage kit just doesn't cut it for me - I'd hate to get screwed on those remaining 80% - especially as most of my runes range from 1g20 (Soldiers) over 4g20 (Dolyak) to 7g (Divinity).

Mind you that salvaging rares is only profitable at lvl 68+.

Fixed.
There should be an educational sticky on that @ Mods.

Whites: salvage
Blues: salvage light and heavy armor only (might change if new purpose is invented to leather stuff)
Greens: merchant
Yellows: Black Lion Salvage Kit if upgrade/sigil. Master Salvage Kit if not.
Oranges: Check TP price compared to upgrade/sigil price if the orange has one and then decide either Black Lion Salvage or Sell at TP.
Pinks: ooooo shinyyyys
Violets: salvage all legendarys! *giggle*

Whites: salvage
Blues: salvage if they would produce mithril/orichalcum, otherwise vendor or tp them whichever gives you more gold.
Greens: If the tp price of their upgrade > max(vendor price, tp price) of item then black lion salvage and sell upgrade in tp otherwise vendor or tp them whichever gives you more gold.
Yellows: see Greens except add price of an ecto to the price of the upgrade, so I tend more to black lion salvage these.
Oranges: see Greens except add price of an ecto to the price of the upgrade.
People tend to overlook the upgrades which can worth more than the item itself.

blue: normally I just merch, sometimes I salvage with basic/fine kit
green: merch 99% of the time, although I do check TP for these
yellow (1-69): TP
yellow (70+): master/mystic/black lion salvage for ecto
exotic (not account/soul bound): TP
exotic (account/soul bound): master/mystic/black lion salvage for ecto and sigil/rune

Vendor blues and greens. There are a few greens that are worth TPing: commonly used berserker's weapons (greatsword, staff, gun) and berserker's armor.
Salvage rares.

Remember on the lower level stuff: those materials also cost money on the TP and people are always crafting lower level stuff either to use or to max the profession. And it's nice to have all the materials you can find from drops and gathering when you're advancing your profession, rather than having to buy it all on the TP.
But I don't min/max. I gather everything even though the time spent is probably better off playing the TP or killing baddies for potential rare/exotic drops. If you're looking for the highest profit-per-hour, you have to research every crafting material and memorize where it all comes from in order to make the call on the fly whether to vendor/salvage/tp. I just save myself the trouble and follow my above strategy, and I do fine.

I vendor all the rest, except high lvl greens. Put those in the mystic toilet and pray for a rare one
