I pre-ordered Guild Wars 2 and got it on the day of release, I got to 80 pretty fast, and burnt through a majority of the content. I've been taking a break from the game and haven't kept up with it since then, but one of my friends just got the game, and I'm going to level a character with her. I was just curious as to some of the major additions or changes to the game while I was gone.

most major content patches were timed. stuff like halloween pvp modes and minigames.
and wintersday just ended, which was also similar.

however, the january patch would consist of mainly PvE stuff, so there's that.

Halloween and Wintersday patches did bring several new permanent jumping puzzles and events into the game though.
