So I go to log in after putting the game down for a bit to discover that my password doesn't work. I press "forgot password" and the screen comes up saying "service unavailable". I go to the guild wars website, and in order to recover my password I need my game's serial number, but I downloaded it digitally, so in order to get that serial number I'd need my password. Who thought that would be a good idea for a game that offers digital downloads?

I downloaded my game digitally, and I was given a serial number or game code, or whatever it is called, at the time of purchase. I have that code written down in a safe place, in case I ever need to prove that the game is mine.

Or access to your email address used...or access to the location you were TOLD when buying digitally to store a copy of said serial.
It would be a terrible idea to NOT implement this system.

Its protecting you from your own stupidity
It's a good thing.
Only joking
Serial stuff should be in your email when you bought GW2.
If you still having issues contact them through support and setup a ticket.
If you can't access your account and your sure you have the correct password, your account may have been hacked. Good news is they have a restore system now you can only use once so you should be ok either way.

What happened to a security question? No one in China knows the name of my first pet.

I dunno, those Chinese know everything
OP: Check your confirmation email when you bought the game digitally, will have the code in that.

Given that people tend to reuse security questions on multiple sites...it's quite likely that they could "know" the name of your first pet, having harvested it from elsewhere. Blizzard had a security breach 6 months ago, Steam had one about 1.5-2 years ago, many fan forums all over the place have had security breaches and their account databases harvested...and the harvested details are then used to try to find valid accounts in various games.

Security questions don't really provide any security anymore - people's answers have been leaked/compromised too many times in too many places...each time linked with the email/account name making it easy to cross-reference if you've used the same email address/account name elsewhere.
And your password not working...may well mean that you got hacked due to the above stuff too.
