Is it just me or the MMORPGs genre has the most dedicated and largest amount of trolls than any other genres?

Having been to a lot of MMORPG boards, I've seen of alot of familiar faces spilling hate/doom and gloom for a considerable amount of the game's lifespan, sometimes across multiple boards. This frankly doesn't help the image that MMORPG players are a bunch of no-lifers.

Oh well, at least it provides an endless source of entertainment when I queueu for my Dota 2 game.

MMO's are the only genre where people dedicate thousands of hours to a single game, no wonder they then want to defend it no matter what.

I do believe, soccer/american football fans are worse though.

Trolls canot survive outside this medium. It's a blessing and a curse. This environment is rich with endemic saprophytes and small insects that are a part of this creature's life as much as krill are to a blue whale, yet studies revealed that over the course of several years, the creature lays the foundation of an interesting ecosystem, also known in environmental microbiology as the Mountain Dew string. It's most dramatic effect is the skin bursting into flames when coming in contact with sunlight.

Trolling is not restricted to online MMO forums. Rather, your sample size is probably restricted to a narrower focus due to your interest.

I guess you don't play PvP games. I'm pretty sure RTS, FPS, and even CCGs and chess all have players that spend a lot of time on the same game. The latter 2 aren't video games, of course.

Nope.

They might be passionated about it, but it is not to the degree that football fans around the world are. At least in the way that leads to destruction.

Everything else you say is true. When you dedicate such a lot of time into playing the game, people want to feel like their time was validated whether by defending or trolling. Also single player games are not long enough for people to spend their time arguing about it.

I think that they could be most frequently found on mmorpgs because those games involve a bigger interaction between players than a shooter for example, but the troll attitude is commonly found in any online game one way or another.

The trolliest organizations plagueing any MMO are SomethingAwful goons on Eve who've basically legitimized it into a Classy Artform by now.  FPS  (and some H2H Fighters) forums and Chat areas on the other hand .. (b/c I've been in dozens by now at all levels including administration) are the Trolliest you'll ever see and absolutely put MMORPG's to shame.  It's no contest and until you've done the same, you have no idea what trolling looks like.  We're talking crap here that rivals College Hazing.  People cohabitating for years at a time while treating eachother like absolute shit and that's just how they show they like eacother... don't even get me started on what they do to people they don't like.  (usually starts with proxies/tunneling/hacking & then calls to the FBI, falsified reports, phishing attempts, nuking, and that's just before the lawyers all get involved)

Seconding what someone above said with American Football.. I think most sports are way worse with trolling than any MMO. You get almost entire populations of countries turn into nasty retards over ridiculous games >.>

Talks about an overabundance of trolls in MMOs

Mentions a MOBA.

Makes sense.

Err, guys this is gamer's lair board. I think the discussion in this thread should be limited to only video gaming.

Replace the word "trolls" with "players" and the sentence still makes sense. Larger gross, larger subgroup. It also helps that these games, by design, compel players to interact. I'm glad GTA isn't an MMO.
