I’m looking for criticism on a build that I actually REALLY LOVE. I tried Scepter/Dagger at first for the damage/mobility, but the defenses on the Focus allow me to stick in the middle of my team for longer and apply Fury/Protection/Swiftness through my four auras.
I like Scepter/Focus for the 5 blasts it offers as it allows me to buff myself/allies with 6-15 stacks of might (though the fire field is sub-par) but I’m still uncertain about my choice of traits in Fire and Water beyond the ones for auras.
To note, this is a TEAM-oriented build, not just something for me to run up and slaughter people randomly with. I’m having some slight trouble with damage right now, and was wondering of any suggestions to improve on it. Most of my damage comes from condition damage(Augmented by the might stacks which adds up to 500+ condition damage) and outlasting the opponent, but this build really shines in groups.
Any improvement advice would be appreciated. Maybe even a weapon swap.
---

My general rotation is to start in air w/Gale for KD, then Fire Signet. Switch to fire for Firewall/Dragonstooth/Phoenix. Water for Comet. and then Earth for Magnetic Wave. If my enemy isn’t toast by then, the 15-might stacked Earth auto attack shreds them quickly. With Might duration runes, the might stacks last until Arcane Wave cools down and i can repeat the might stacking at any capture point.
I never thought about Earth Signet, and may swap out Air for it, the immobilize would work well with Dragons tooth but the extra 10 secs CD would hurt. Also, i REALLY love having 4 auras that give Protection/Fury/Swiftness to a team, but you pose a good point. I may drop the 10 Traited Air for 10 Arcane, but the fury buff… =/ My team having +500 power/cond.dmg on top of near constant Protection/Fury/Swiftness is really boss.

You're talking about 4 Auras, I see one in this build.. (4 if you count the 3 signets that give you the same aura which afaik doesn't work with powerful auras).

That being said your build is very lacking, in both damage and survivability, the main reason for this is the lack of Arcana which means you won't be able to switch attunements very often and as such won't be able to use your skills whenever they come off cooldown and the lack of a proper healing skill (the signet is all well and good but without 30 points in earth you won't really be able to use the active of it) that leaves the small heal for attuning to water which you cant do very often cause of 0 Arcana and Water Trident.

Focus is also not really a viable weapon for Eles imo, the damage potential is quite low and it doesnt provide much in terms mobility and healing compared to Dagger offhand. Also dagger offhand provides 2 blast finishers in earth and a way better fire field.

My advice is leave the focus and run any of the other 3 weapon options available to Eles (D/D, S/D or staff), take at least 10-20 points in Arcana and forget about the signets as utility skills.

I did try something similar but i find the build is lacking in many aspects:

1) no stun breaker

2) damage is very low

3) control from focus is nice but it doesnt provide any damage or healing

4) playing pure conditions with ele is "meh". After trying ranger and necro i can say ele stacks conditions way too slowly to be acceptable

5) when defenses from focus are on cd it's BIG trouble

6) attunement is way too slow

7) u play on fire aura which is by far the worst aura available

8) while i understand the will to play for grp fights and support i still think a signet based build should still go for 30 pts in earth for written in stone. And i have troubles thinking signet builds are viable: passive effects do not compensate for the lack of defense.

Sorry i sound very negative on your build though i tried to give constructive comments. What's sad is atm i feel d/d is the only viable choice with very small variants in the choices from arcane/water/air. Fire and earth just dont seem to offer the same damage and survivability.

I appreciate the honest responses, and it's really a shame that a build cannot be viable without Arcana. That being said, survivability hasn't been an issue for me so far. Very rarely do I lose a 1v1 fight (though the damage issue I cannot disagree) and I went from S/D to S/F because the Focus also allows me to maintain 5 blast finishers even easier than offhand Dagger (churning earth used to screw me more than help me).
I had thought Firewall was rather useless at first too, till I played around with it in PvE. the 8 second wall is most effective against melee-oriented enemies when you stand RIGHT behind it and keep them chasing you up and down its rather large radius.
As for damage, the only drawback is that I have to go into "Battle Mode."  Starting with fire and using my blasts until I end up in Earth. Earth trait is 80 toughness, plus the 250 toughness from Scepter, plus Signet of Earth leaves me in earth with a good amount of toughness, auras for protection, and an extra 500+ power/condition damage from 12-50 might stacks (which makes the scepter autoattack insanely dangerous)
The auras aren't actually meant for their effects. they're meant for their traited effects. (Protection/Fury/Swiftness)

Still, I understand this is a very unorthodox build, and am still trying to tweak it. I wont give up entirely on the Focus yet.

Signet builds are viable, but you need at least lighting flash as a cantrip to go with, you cant go entirely signet.  Something needs to be there when you get stunned and this cantrip's cooldown is fast meaning its mostly up.

Btw I do perfectly well without arcana, thats not absolute!  Also I do fine without written in stone, just save your heal signet as long as possible for the passive effect.  Signets recharge very fast.

However I am d/d.  I cant see combining sceptre and focus with giving me acceptable results at all, its just too defensive to the point where you are automatically on the defense all the time.  I'd say you need a dagger in at least one hand to get acceptable "bite".

Dont give up Air 10 fury!!!

Are you talking about hotjoin or tPvP? Because anything is viable in hotjoin really.

Using a Focus is very interesting mainly for the fact that you can use more offensive utilities than with a Dagger. I agree with the Lightning Flash suggestion, either that or Mist form or even Arcane Shield, so if you're getting stunned or knocked down you have some way to survive the incoming burst in case your Earth attunement (or just Obsidian Flesh) is on cooldown

I played S/F for a long time but didn't manage to grasp a good use of Signet builds, which are too single target oriented for my taste. I switched to D/F not so long ago and I love it very much. You may want to give it a shot as this will give you the very powerful Shocking Aura (as well as some other cool things in PvP).

Also, you should absolutely use Signet of Earth over Signet of Air. If you want to secure a Dragon Tooth + Phoenix + whatever else burst, we have nothing better for this. Even if you Gale your opponent before starting to chain your Fire spells, chances are they'll dodge the burst as it'll land right at the time they're on their feet (and it will happen especially since you precise you use Firewall before starting DT + Phoenix, which I don't because then the burst is definitely impossible to land). With an additional press of a button you just say your opponent "your death is coming" by immobilizing him. And the additional toughness is a always a blessing, while given your high swiftness uptime, the movement speed won't help you quite as much.

Also, I'm still experimenting with this, but you may want to give a shot to Tornado as an Elite. I found that switching to Tornado doesn't delete Obsidian Flesh invulnerability, so you take no damage until the first blowout hit, and after that you have a very strong psychological advantage as they'll go all "shit tornado shit shit shit", blowup their stunbreak like crazy, and if things go wrong, just quit the tornado form before the end so you don't die. Especially fun in WvWvW.

You need atleast 10 points in Arcana on any type of builds to be effective. In the case of scepter/focus, I would take the 20 off in fire and put it in arcana with Elemental Attunement and Vigrous Scepter traits.
