Buying "bargain" character slots with gold.

For those of you that get suckered into the whole "600 < 800" idea, and have YET to buy gems consider this:
With 100 gems costing 2,22g, it is cheaper to buy character slots at a non-reduced price as long as 100 gems cost less than 1,66 gold.
Given the prices of gems we saw recently, if you have yet to buy gems, you are basically not saving anything by buying gems to buy character slots now. Especially since the price of gems will most likely go up a bit since us Euros basically just woke up and Americans haven't yet.
Of course, if you already have gems, buy slots now. And if you want to buy slots with cash, also buy now.
But, once again, as it stands now, think twice before buying gems with gold to buy character slots. It most likely will not be worth it.

Currently 100 gems = 2g
1 slot @ 600gems = 12g
If slots weren't on sale and sold for 800 gems that would mean gems would need to be less than 1.5g for 100 gems to be cheaper. Since I haven't been following gem prices, my question is have gems been selling for 1.5g or less?

At 2g per 100, you are absolutely not saving much, but at least you are also not losing much.
I think about 12 gold is the current price for a character slot (either as expensive 600 gems or "cheap" 800 gems), take or lose a few silver.
So if you are buying now to make a killer sale, it's too late. But if you need a character slot either way, it's not the worst price you can pay. Just don't buy it because it's on sale. Buy it because you need the slot.

Thanks. I purchased 3 character slots just so I have a slot for each profession and for extra mules. I'm kind of regretting it but I've always wanted 8 slots.
According to the wiki 8 slots is not the max. The max is currently unknown and someone has like 37 slots.

I heard 25 was the limit. It's not.
These were bought before the "January White Sale" and I'm not planning on buying more.
And yes, they had problems with the gem store / character slot at release (which resulted in my credit card purchasing 8 extra instead of 1. Ended up using them and then some.

Most players have their exotics by now, people found the most efficient ways to farm gold, we got fractals (which get us even more gold per hour than before) and there's no significant gold sinks in the game that keeps inflation at bay.
Result is that everything (that's in demand) gets more expensive. Especially if ANet keeps on releasing new gem shop stuff, like holiday items, remake kits - and who knows what the january release will bring. New hairstyles, town clothes, "alliance kits", more unique armour and weapon skins - you name it. Resulting in more people rushing to get gems and prices rising again - and it becomes more and more profitable thus attractive to buy gems and sell them for gold.
And of course this is exactly what ANet intended.

My friend bought 2 more char slots today/yesterday...whichever day it was that sale started. He has 40 slots, so I can say that the limit is 40+ : )

If they ever implement stuff like birthday presents which used to be in Guild Wars 1, having 28 chars means you'll get 28 gifts once per year. Some of those were super rare(and worth a lot of gold) so increasing your chances doesn't hurt, specially if you're a collector or a perfectionist.
Of course there are plenty of alt-aholics who just love leveling multiple toons. My guildie had 2 level 80s, a level 50 and all professions maxed by the time I got my first character to 80 and we both started at the same time. Guess some people burn through the game far quicker than others and so they need more slots.

I see.
The gem exchange rate is crazy now. I spent 20$ on gems because I didn't even have that much gold to buy 3 slots.

Yea I bought my 3 slots back when you were getting them for about 2g each with the gem exchange and I am kicking myself for not buying more.
I also forgot that gathering nodes aren't account bound(at least they weren't last time I checked) So you can see how having multiple toons can seriously bump up your gold income.

Aye, absolutely - I think most can see prices for gems rising. The point though was that if you didn't feel like buying a character slot was worth it a week ago, you really weren't getting a better deal yesterday.

The question however is also: do we get better deals than this in the future when gold prices have risen even further and there's no reduced prices anymore?

I imagine players will still be able to buy character slots at these prices in the next few weeks if they keep a check on gem prices a bit. But as a general rule, yes, I fully agree - prices will rise, so if players want cash shop items, as soon as prices drop a bit, they should be looking at buying some gems.
EDIT:
And unless you REALLY need the items, save the gems you buy and wait for sales. ^^

Race / profession combos. Storylines. Experimentation with racials. Trying to get the right feel. Alt-aholic, name combinations (addicted to trying to make witty puns). Often it was a camera height issue (all of these rolled before they added the gem store makeover kits).
I like to explore: maps, gameplay, and characters.
Leveling in this game is the easiest I have found in over 13 years through 9 different MMO's. Two weeks to get to 80 is not hard for me (IF I want to push them that fast.) Not all of those characters will reach 80 as the info I gathered from exploring them is complete. There will be some I absolutely take my time with and won't hit 80 until well past summer.
I have one "main" for WvW. And one for explorables. And backup characters, depending on what group composition / needs my guild may have.
I know it seems like overkill to have that many, from a practical viewpoint. And it is. I'm just squeezing everything I can out of the game.

I wish I had gotten them for free as well.
No, the bug I had was purchasing one slot, and being charged for 8. I'm sure I could have contested it with support and had them "refund". I knew I was going to end up using them anyway.
The problem was reported and ANet got onto it very quickly and I never had any other issues with the gem store.

OK, this is old now, but for future reference, can you buy gems for real cash in any amounts you want, or can you buy only set packages, e.g., $10 for 800? The reason I ask is because buying something you want with real cash during a sale might not save you anything anyway if you can buy only lots of 800 gems; in the case of the character slot, you could be left with 200 gems to spend on tat you don't want.

And yes, if you purchase the sale price character slot for 600, (purchasing 800 gems for $10) that leaves 200 gems leftover.
You have several choices for those leftover gems:
1) Buy something little (sunglasses, hat) for 150 gems. (no comment). Oh and you still have 50 gems leftover, see #3 below.
2) Convert to gold using the gem store exchange rate. (watch the rate carefully).
3) Coaxed to buy more gems to get something "useful" starting at the 250 gem amount. (tinfoil hat conspiracy theory on slot price.)
4) Sit on the gems waiting on the right price to sell to other players via trade post.
