I started playing since the release, leveled my guardian to 80, crafted full exotics, mystic forge weapon. Played a bit WvW, leveled few alts etc. I was doing pretty much anything that there was to do back then and eventually got bored. I guess you could say I really rushed the game.

Now I want to return but I am not sure how to proceed. These days people seem to only farm and level in the dungeon Fractals. Can someone explain this dungeon to me? How does it  work? Is it hard? What is my job there as a guardian?

the simplest way i can say to get into the game is do whatever is fun. don't treat it like a chore or a second job. if you're about to log on and feel like doing a jump puzzle or two, they hey, do it. so what if you don't get your daily dungeon runs in. if you feel like playing WvW for a couple hours and spending gold on golems and other blueprints, do it. if you just wanna hang around LA and make jokes and use tonics, do it. if you wanna explore the map and uncover new areas while working towards 100%, then do that. or if you don't feel like playing GW2 today or tomorrow, then take a break.

the question "how do i get back into the game" almost implies that there's a set way to enjoy the game. just go at your own pace and do whatever you want. have fun, and don't worry if you don't have 1,000 gold or exotics on every alt or level 50 fractal completion.

Fractals of the Mists is basically a randomized dungeon made up of 3 different parts selected from a pool of (at the time of writing this) 9 total fractals. As you go in you start at level 1, when you complete the first round you go up one level. On even levels you also face a boss after the 3 randomized fractals. Every 10 levels the difficulty of the dungeon increases radically, the agony mechanic is introduced as well as ascended gear (rings and backpacks).

Your job as a guardian in there is gonna vary depending on what fractals you play and it will take too much time for us to detail every single fractal, just play the thing and you will learn pretty fast what you can contribute. Suffice it to say Guardians are a good profession for the dungeon.

Well it looks as though you've done alot of the things the game has to offer. Fractals were brought in back in November along with a new tier of goodies to collect, more powerful than exotics called Ascended (or Grindtacular+) which you can currently only get from grinding Fractals dungeons. The use of the term Ascended is a bastardisation of the implementation of ascended armour in GW1.

Fractals are 9 dungeons accessible via LA for groups of 5; you will randomly play 3 per set, lasting approximately 40 minutes in total. On completion you will be able to access them at higher difficulty. They are scaled according to how many sets you've previously completed so if you haven't spent dozens of hours in them already you will find it more difficult to get groups if you aren't in a guild. Difficulty is increased by implementing a condition called Agony, which is a bastardisation of the Mursaat's Spectral Agony from GW1.

Please Note: I am not saying Anet does not have the right to exploit their previous creations into a bastardised version to promote some shady grind mechanic in their totally non-grindy game which complies fully with the advertised features they have so successfully implemented as set out in their bountious promotions over 5 years. My sarcasm not withstanding, have fun in what ever way you like :-)

Fractals sure is the most popular thing, but the advent of gw2lfg.com has all but ensured you can run any PvE content you want.

I'm not an expert on Fractals but you don't need an expert opinion it sounds like.  Basically the Fractals are slightly bigger than some of the holiday mini dungeons and you do a set of them every time you make a Fractal run.   You go to this hub, and from the hub you go to the Fractal.  The fractal itself is its own instance, a "set piece" essentially where you have some dungeon with an objective, usually killing something at the end.

Fractals on its face is a good idea because it relieves some monotony.  You don't know which one you're going to get.  You get random scenarios every time, and people who are experts at them usually know the shortcuts, etc.  There are a finite amount of them but there's still quite a few I'm not sure how many exactly.

Some of them have unique game mechanics.  That said I got tired of it quickly, I'll do it with the guild every so often but I never just go there.  Are they hard?  Dungeon hard, and apparently if you don't get the right gear (which you can only get in this dungeon) the higher levels of the dungeon can get silly.  That kind of thing isn't my bag personally but it seems to satisfy people who like that kind of thing.

As a Guardian you'll do fine, essentially anyone's job in a Fractal is to die as least often as possible and follow the objective, and if someone knows how to do the fractal you're in, you listen to that person.

There hasn't been much change to content, only real new thing is fractals. Which you hate or love.
Fractals have levels and every level is harder (by only a little), and for example at lvl10, new mechanics get introduced.
There is also a non-removable condition 'agony' which hits harder every level, and you can only counter it by using infusions, which are a reward from this dungeon.
Fractals have 9 different forms atm, like small scenarios you could say and every run you get 3 random ones, and at every even level (2,4,6,...) you'll get a bonus fractal (always the same one) which rewards alot.

What you do as a guardian is pretty much the same up untill lvl30 or so, just do whatever you did before in dungeons.
At lvl30 some more coordination becomes necessary, as a guardian then you might focus on "tanking" and "healing/support".

Note that there are some changes coming to fractals at the end of january, change to how the levels work and the rewards, so maybe you could wait for those to be live before you start. :)

Try fract and see if you enjoy it. If not then I would just work on a new character or something to spice things up. I have to say I'm kinda in the same boat and to be frank, this game doesn't have the greatest entertainment longevity. I was going to go back and get world completion but I'm getting bored out of my mind once again.

Ignore the usual people hovering around dampening people's spirits ;)

Basically what jthamind said is pretty accurate; do what you feel like doing. If one of those things is to have a goal and achieve it then great, but don't expect the game to push goals (gear, rank, levels etc) on you... just find something you want to achieve :)

And do what you feel like, what you find fun etc at the time.

Question, feedback or issue? Pm me!

Try some WvW. The style in WvW has become more agressive now that there are more commanders people who actually know what they are doing. This is the case in my sever, anyway.
