For nVidia drivers, just do a custom install and tick the clean install option. I use DS only when I have problems after installing a newer driver version, both for nVidia and AMD.

If you're updating from one official version to another, its not really needed. Both AMD and Nvidia has gotten alot better in driver installations over the last few years.

Is it good to run it every now and then in safe mode just to see what shouldnt be there from previous drivers?

The old Driver Sweeper is called Driver Fusion now. Looks different, has the same functions and much more and it's still free ( for the core functions at least ).
