I'll try it out, looks interesting enough. I'm really waiting for The Elder Scrolls Online, I hope they are F2P as well or go F2P later on.

F2P or B2P is the new way to go, besides I think they earn more profit implementing either of those systems. It would be a clumsy move to release ESO with monthly fees, they hae to realize that.

I played Tera with a buddy up to level ~25.  It felt like any F2P MMO availible at the time, so it going F2P so quickly doesn't surprise me. It felt like a mix between Vindictus and Dragon Nest. The character models were nothing remarkable, aside from the overt over-sexuality, and your choices don't really matter because your armor will decide your hairstyle and general look anyway. The world doesn't even acknowledge your existence, you can run by any creature without it attacking you, little voice acting, quite the static experience.  The worst part really is the combat.  They claim it's "action done right", but opponents telegraph everything well in advance and fights wait for you to win. If you even take a hit it's because you weren't paying attention. Combat actions are limited and there is no interaction with other players' combat actions, so you get locked into patterns quite quickly. Questing is non-sensical and requires you to run half-way across the map to kill 10 of something and run all the way back to get the next quest. Not only that but it seems no one reads the quest text, it's quite poorly written and at one point the same quest-giver sends you to protect piglets that are being bullied then sends you back to kill them.  Quest objectives are not shared in parties either, so wihle we were playing we had to wait double the time for roots, orbs, and opponents to respawn to move on together.

I would not recommend TERA to anyone. Here's the TLDR version:

seems like f2p or b2p is the new way to go, aion went f2p, swtor, and now tera. B2P would seem like the best option unless your WoW. I honestly don't understand how they are still able to charge people to play when there are so many other free MMOs that are very fun.

I honestly do not understand why they simply don't go with the GW2 model - it's not perfect, but it is better than pretty much anything I can see. You pay for the game, get the full game and then pay for the bonuses. Instead they give us a free "game", where half the things aren't working and then expect to see folks pay to just unlock the functionality of the game. It just seems like such a bad introduction to the game - I tried the F2P Aion and when I didn't have whispers (or party chat or something) I just uninstalled the game because they left out such an important function that I didn't even want to test the rest of the game.

Well, downloading as we speak. Gonna play the unlimited trial to see what the fuss is about! After checking the class page, looks like I'll be playing Warrior and Mystic. They seem to be sort of hybrid-y, meaning I'll enjoy them. I'd have tried the Lancer over the Warrior if I hadn't heard reports on it being very static.

Agreed. The payment model was one of the things that drew me to GW2. I believe Star Citizen will be implementing this form of payment (Roberts, the guy behind the project, specifically mentioned GW2 when he talked about the payment plan IIRC) so hopefully we'll see more following in this example.

I think the "tera in 10 seconds" was more accurate as to what the game has to offer.

That's great news. I used to play it and paid for a few months, but I just can't pay a sub fee for multiple games (and I already have another I pay for) so I quit. Been waiting for it to go f2p so I could jump back in it. It's not a bad game. Just not something I"m willing to pay a sub for. And thank god it seems that they didn't go the Swtor route with their f2p model. Swtor is an absolute horror, nickle and diming you for everything.

After playing on the first island, I am beginning to remember while I left the Korean beta. also losing the ability to cast on the go is something I took from granted in Gw2 and the quest presentation.

I gotta agree with this. But with Aion you don't get whispers until level 10? 20? something along those lines, its to help stop gold sellers PMing players and spaming them. I just tried Tera, and realized you can't cast and move at the same time. I absolutly hate that after i've tried it in gw2.

This might be the new "can't swim/jump" hurdle that so many complained about in for example, GW1 vs WoW...

I think it has more to do with the fact that TERA constantly hyped up their awesome action combat.
How can something be action combat if you get locked in place when using more or less every single skill?

Same way fighting games lock your animations and movements when you start an attack. It's simply a part of the gameplay style that some people might like and others might not. When I tried it I was perfectly ok with the animation locking. Different strokes, I guess.

Who didn't see that coming?

Figured after KTera went f2p, Tera NA would would follow the process. It's nice too, because it's actually a really nice game... Just not worth 15$ a month tho. Been waiting a few months for this to happen, and since I bought the game awhile back during beta I'll get founder status. Figured this will be a nice replacement until Anet can get their heads out of the sand.

Well I tried the game. Nice graphics and all, but I wasn't too enamored by the combat. Until I played the Lancer. I'm enjoying the class a lot, I love its active blocking system! Even though I'll probably solo all throughout the game until I get bored, I'll still be playing this class. I wasn't going to continue the game after my free trial ends, but the Lancer alone changed my mind :D Still not worth a subscription, but definitely worth my time - and maybe even worth a box purchase.

Oh, and the females... I'm no prude but I think they're too oversexualized (so are the males for that matter, but I don't like the look of any male other than Amani and - technically not male but still masculine - Baraka). I tend to play both male and female characters in RPGs but I actually feel kind of uncomfortable playing female characters in TERA! And the Elin, well their cutesy design may be a pop culture staple in Asia or for fans of anime, but to me it's just disturbing

It was an interesting game. Combat was cool for awhile, but having to do the same 'wicked combos' on every mob got boring real fast.

Still cannot believe how over-sexualized this game is, either.

AFAIR you can't jump and cast either. I know some TERA players complained about GW2 animations being similar to "ice skating", but the fluidity of being able to jump/move and cast on the go is a staple of combat for me. There are a few skills in GW2 that lock you in place for casting, like pistol whip, and I absolutely can't stand them because they make me feel more vulnerable. I like playing on the go, not playing as a tree.

As I said months ago, kawaii ugu weeaboo game for me. Not for my taste in any aspect, asian beyond asian even after the NA localization.

I might download it and see how it is but at 20gb that is pretty stressful on my bandwidth. The graphics do look nice. Dungeons and raids look good as well. GW2 is getting kinda stagnant right now since there really isnt anything to do except grind. It would be nice to explore something new for a while.

I dont know, but somehow im far less enthusastic with this all f2p manner.

Mostly since i know that for free you can got bitten in questionable reputacion district, and its not always since someties they will pick your mobile.

As for games its preatty safe to assume that gaming companies are not kind of crazy charity, but they want your money, all of it.
And they offer game frame for free, they will probably sell you something in future. And to sell something, they will need to take it away from basic version. Probably even artificially create a need for future sales, like for extra inventory space or exp boost.

And to be honest there is nothing apealing in being able kinda avarage games for free or little.
I miss the times when games was complete quality product.

I sense a kindred soul in a similar state of box/manual nostalgia

The good thing with this f2p thing is that you get to try out the game at least - and given one can level all the way to max level and (I think?) don't miss out on content just yet, TERA should be OK for now. I'm not that hot on the game TBH but it's a fun break from GW2, which I've been playing non stop since release (and will continue to do so probably for a while). And I like its more deliberate pace and active blocking system.

While I liked some of the outfits and the game looked nice, it's meh overall.  The action combat system was nice to start out with, but you get used to it and the game is more of the same old, same old after awhile.

Also, this game killed my enthuasim for Blade and Soul.
It is a statical fact that half the people on the boards have a secret desire to be a cat-girl samurai.
