Free-To-Play as of yesterday

I played the TERA free-trial or beta several months ago.. I cannot recall what it was about TERA I did not like so I will somewhat reluctantly give it another try. I will be optimistic here and hope whatever it was has been changed or improved.

This F2P idea seems to be the flavour of the year, wonder what else will be following suit. Might make me check this game out.

After this last patch, I am downloading Tera as I type. Maybe this will provide a nice distraction until Anet starts to get things right with their game :)

Downloaded this since I'm giving gw2 a long rest, enjoying it so far.
I like that each class has its own evade mechanic makes the playstyle a bit different than dodge roll for everyone.

There is also a system that lets you chain moves together ..
you can activate the next move in a chain with spacebar instead of the normal hotkey.
Example :
the Archer has a move he hits twice in melee to damage and stun an attacker,
this procs a promt to hit spacebar to activate the next move in the chain which damages the attacker breaking the stun,
and another proc/promt to hit spacebar again to activate the third skill which leaps you away away from the attacker.

Was expecting starting areas to be dead..but they are thriving people everywhere, which also surprised me.

I ended up installing it again and boy of boy is it pretty! The colours are simply to die for!
Not only is it pretty, it's also pretty darn huge: the levelling experience is quite fantastic since you can actually skip content instead of having to do everything in a tiny space just so that you grind enough XP to be able to move on. Camera controls are amazing, although I do miss using skills on the move. There also seems to be a "first guy that hits a foe gets the XP" rule and I bloody hate it.

I am not entirely sure I'll continue playing because I hate the limitations of the free accounts and it's WAY to much of an MMO for my taste, but from what I can see, they did quite a number of things really right: if you'd mix GW1, GW2 and TERA you could end up with a pretty darn good MMO!

As much as I recall, the end-game can get extremely repetitive.  But I enjoyed the feel of the game.  The reticle-based targeting and dodge mechanics, combined with combat telegraphing (and way better camera controls, IMO) make the game's combat a joy.  I could actually take a hit and could tell when I needed to move the hell out of the way.

My only issue is the number of abilities you need to keep track of and the lack of depth in the combat itself.  All Warriors use twin-blades, etc, etc.  No stat diversification either.

The story, meh.
It's okay to enjoy crap if you're willing to admit it's crap.
Every patch is like ArenaNet walking out onto the stage of the International Don't Kitten Up Championship, and then proceeding to shiv itself in the stomach 30 times while screaming "IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD! IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!"

I tried it again (tried the free trial last summer out of boredom) and feeling was exactly the same.

Positive:
The world is beautifull

Negative:
The UI is really ugly, same with all indicators in combat,...
Combat is boring
Characters are just ridiculous

So I just wasted 1h downloading it (luckely I have no max amount of download/month :P)

The UI is different.  Largely to handle the fact that you don't have an active mouse cursor all the time.  Makes it feel a little clunky.  I admit, I dislike the combat indicators, but only because I never memorized them.

Combat's a little slow, but so is another game that's recently been released by NCSoft.  Both lack depth and synergy.  Most of the synergy's actually put into only one or two classes.

And finally, it's a Korean MMO.  They have a different aesthetic.  Are you in any way, shape or form into manga and anime?  Then you might take issue with the art style, but to a lot of people that's a good style.  It's definitely not going to have the same broad appeal in the West.

  • No I really, really hate everything about the UI, it's so slick/modern and totally not fitting for a fantasy game, for example the damage numbers during combat fit more into a space themed game imo.
  • Myea, but the combat is so incredibly boring (this is especially aching because they market it as a action game), and after playing GW2 and even GW1, it feel svery cluncky and slow.
  • I actually really love the graphics, the vibrant feel fits a fantasy game very well imo
For example this is a pic of the way I play Skyrim: (picture from google cause I can't be arsed to get one myself, upload it and all that,...)
    http://www.guru3d.co...ion=file&id=124
So you see I really like that kind of graphics, but all the other things in the game just ruin it for me..
And nope never watched anything manga or so.

TERA is one of those games I just couldn't do. The combat was boring, it felt like any other F2P MMO really, except it felt like I was playing  some guy's kinky sexual fantasy.

Anyway, it's just not for me. Let's leave it at that. It was an interesting try but as always, over hyped and oversexualized. Alienating many and boring others.

How is it clunky and slow compared to GW2? Because you can't use skills on the move? I mean, while I wish things would die faster, I get the exact same feeling in GW2 also.

Yes mostly because of skills always rooting you (very few exceptions), but more because the skills and combat mechanics work like in a standard MMO, with slow regenerating hp, and taunts, and all that stuff, just not my thing..

The animation root in Tera absolutely drives me insane and is the single biggest issue I had with the combat in the game.

Was having a decent time with Tera's combat at first, I was hoping as I got more interesting abilities it would be less spammy, but it unfortunately degenerated into the usual boring rotation system like in most other MMOs (a bit funner mind you). The questing is of course generic and dead boring like it is in most MMOs as well (seriously devs... at least put in something like rifts to help spice things up or story driven like SWTOR).
Game looks amazing, though choice of aesthetics are a bit... ehhhh for me. Controls were tight for the most part (jumping aside) and was over all very responsive and slick, worthy of it's status as a triple A title and beats out the free to play clutter-crap that you find at places like aeria games, gpotato, gravity, etc. (figured I'd include this since some people seem to either forget or not know what a truly shitty MMO is)
BAMs were quiet cool and much more satisfying to fight and beat then, say, your typical raid bosses. Over all, so far as mainstream 'WoW model' MMOs go, it was quiet good. If I wasn't already completely burned out on such systems (questing, basic trinity, etc) I think it would have been something I could stick with.

Yeah, I guess "clunkier and slower than GW2" is absolutely something I can agree with.

I thought i'd play GW2 alot longer than this (almost 9 months?), but yeah, i switched to Tera 3 weeks ago (I left the square maps for a more immersive world lol). My wife still plays GW2, but personnally, i really got bored with the "new" content. Kinda tired of the "new weapon skin gambling every month", blablabla... There's alot of GW2 players in the Tera starter area chat. No one really bitching GW2 (like in Rift chat... omg...), but most of us just wanted to try something else in the last 3-4 weeks.

Still, i probably will play GW2 from time to time just to play WvW and help my wife completing her monthly achievements.

Tera suffers issues opposite of GW2. It's a game with great fundamental mechanics, but the execution of those mechanics is bland. If you can manage the 30 gig download it's worth picking up just to experience the polished combat system. I wouldn't bother playing until "end game" as it consists of copypasted BAMs with different gimmick mechanics and the gear treadmill is an RNG grind.

No I have not played Tera Online since it is completely sold out in my country Finland. No shops or player in Finland sells TERA Online I checked it and no I don't want to buy stuff from Ebay. I once bought something from Ebay, but the tax USA ==> EU was much indeed.

Yeah good idea. However as next step before doing that I checked and Tera Online does not support Direct X11. World of Warcraft(new expansion coming) and Neverwinter MMO supports direct X 11.

It is nothing against Tera Online only, but generally I do not want to play none Direct X11 games since my graphiccard REALLY needs that boost.

Wildstar will be the new Tera, at least in some ways. Pretty and good combat, but grindy as hell.

I played a little of the Wildstar beta.

It is not as pretty as Tera, but the mechanics seem much better.  Wildstar combat is kinda like GW2 without autoattack.  Actually, it's like GW1 with telegraphs and dodge.

Plus, the quests are a little more varied in Wildstar than Tera, although it is still standard find exclamation point stuff.

But yeah, apparently Wildstar gets better at late levels, and I don't have the time or patience for that anymore.

Ok people, lets keep ontopic - this is a thread to discuss TERA Online - and before anyone aske's... comparing what is known about Wildstar to TERA is fine (up to a point). Also, lets keep the offtopic, political, specific comments about a specific race and/or those who play it, etc out. Also, please don't dredge up comments make 1-2 years ago - unless it has relevance to the game as it currently is (and is not political, offtopic, etc). Thank you.

Is this the first new class? Or has there been other classes released since launch? Also, will this be the only single race locked class?

yeah it looks like the class is Elin only and they aren't going to add it to the other races it seems

I believe the Elin is the most popular race in Korea so I think that was why they decided on it (personally think it's crap to add a class just for one race but korean games seem to have a lot of exclusivity in regards to race/class/sex)

In my opinion it would have been better if they released like 3 new classes at once, now they'll have like a million new chars with the same class.

Still i have been playing the game a while, and it's really fun to play! The combat mechanics are awesome with the dodging and stuff, also the BAM's (Big Ass Monsters?) are epic to fight against. But, there simply just aren't enough features or lore to keep you playing.

In other words, it's fun to play the first few levels and bosses, but after that it gets pretty repetitive and boring even, atleast for my taste.

I downloaded this once and gave it a try. It ran like crap on my PC so I had to uninstall. And when I did something got mucked up and destroyed my computer to the point that I had to restore back to factory defaults and lost everything. Took me weeks to re-install all my old stuff, and had to start over the entire Mass Effect trilogy to get my save file back for the second half of ME3. Haven't gone near the game since.

So...how typical is that? Seems like a one-in-a-million problem to me.
