Hey everyone, I posted a couple of days ago wondering about viability of thiefs in high level content. Through reading everyone's responses I was intrigued to discover that Necros are considered not only viable, but very good due to bleed/poison/vulnerability. In would like people's opinions on which class to run.

Please note that I am not interested in sPvP  in the slightest. I am looking for a fun class to play in high level dungeons/fractals who will do good damage while contributing to the group.

Thanks in advance!

Go necro for sure.

depends on what you're considering fun. I personally played both and I found both professions repetitive after some time. As thief, you are forced to spam one or two best skills all the time because of the fact the others are not worth the intiative. You won't be switching your weapons often, only when you need to run away or move around, because you have only one initiative bar for both weapons.

As necro, you have arguably the most dull weapon ever with sound effect so annoying you will hate it after 10 minutes - the staff. The other weapons are not that fun either. In most cases it's just some damage and/or condition effect with hardly noticeable graphics. The deathshround mechanic is somewhat enjoyable, but gets old quickly. Both professions are lacking in weapon department, with few good combinations worth using and the rest generally lacking and not worth using.

My advice is: Try both are decide yourself what is more fun to you.

I didnt like thief before, but now when i play p/d in dungeons and such its awesome. :) Havent really tried necro much but they seem very viable. I know a couple of support necros in my guild that is awesome to have around.

I would go by the style of weapons rather than the overall class.

If you dont like guns, you wont like the thief. If you dont like magic, you wont like the necro. In terms of bleeds/poision/etc I guess they are fairly similar, but the necro probably offer more in the ways of group support while the thief is better at specifically targetting enemies.

I play my low level theif and necro a little now and then and the weapon effects of the necro is starting to bug the crap out of me while I quite enjoy the theif. At the end of the day, if you dont like the audio and visuals of a class, you're never going to like it.

Necro's are horrible in PUGs. HORRIBLE. This is due to rarely having control over the composition of the group. If you're with a SB Ranger, your DPS drops INSANELY thanks to a maximum bleed stack of 25.

To remain on neutral ground, I hope you don't mind dying a lot as a Thief. Or getting kicked from PUGs as players assume you are automatically bad.

I disagree somewhat with this. While its true for condition builds using sceptres, power\crit or power\vitality\toughness builds using daggers play very well with condition based profs in your group. You don't need to compete for bleed cap on the main target and the utility skill Epidemic causes all conditions on the target (even those inflicted by other players) to be transferred to all nearby enemies, meaning that your aoe damage actually increases substantially for very little effort.

I agree with your 100% about the thief though.

I think the big play-style difference between the two classes is that the thief's damage is very straight forwards but not dying is what takes effort, while optimising a necro's damage and support takes effort but their defences are slightly more passive then the thief's.

Personally I find both very fun and nether seem useless. I'd recommend getting them both up to a decent level and see what you find more enjoyable.

Go Necro. I only say that because you mentioned you wanted to support your team. In my opinion, Necros have a very unique way of supporting: boon/condition manipulation. No other classes can do it, and I always welcome a Necro that knows how to manipulate boons/conditions to my team. Thief doesn't offer a lot of support aside from group stealths, blinds, and venom sharing. Just my opinion, take it as you may.

necro is arguably the best aoe class in the game, and offers much more in the form of party support and condition damage.  thieves in groups are really disappointing imo, squishy as hell and only really offer blind and the situational stealth for running past stuff.

now given a good player with a thief is going to boost your party's dps considerably more than a necro, if I was running an organized non-pug group I would much rather take a necro than a thief.  I'm currently revisiting my necro after I benched it a while ago and having a lot of fun with condition builds, and going mark/well build offers ridiculously good aoe.  I leveled a thief to 80 and decided afterwords that it really isn't worth it for dungeons, all you can really provide is blind spam and maybe venom sharing, which honestly isn't that great imo.

I am a proponent of necro over thief, my first char was a necro and i had tons of fun lvling him up, doing dungeons, fotm and orr content. i recently started a thief and so far i had 10 times more fun with lvling a necro, thats just my input tho
