I want the hunter rifle skin, looking at the trading post prices it's around 280g. According to the wiki 4 lvl 80 exotics into the mystic forge has a chance of getting it. Should I chance it with the mystic forge or just save up and buy it?

MF is PURELY LUCK related...So if you think that you would succed in creating it without spending an absurd amount of money than go ahead and try it. Gamble and who knows?! High risks come with high rewards. I have tried and ended up spending somewhat around 20g (more or less) in the MF in my quest to get a precursor. It is up entirely to you though...

Most precursors have a named-exotic equivalent skin which is considerably cheaper... I'd try to find that out first before shelling out for The Hunter just for its skin.

in this case there isn't the same skin outside of PvP IIRC.

to OP: the mystic toilet is essentially playing roulette.  You place your bets down, the wheel spins, and most of the time you will lose.  The drop rate on precursors from the forge is really really low, using rares or exotics.  You might get lucky and get it on your first combination, but you could very easily spend over 280g just throwing rifles in the forge before you see it, if you ever see it.

I've thrown over 1000 greatswords and easily 500 hammers in (most have been rares mind you) into the forge and have yet to see a single precursor drop from the forge.  There is absolutely no guarantee to getting it.  If you have the money to just buy it, it might be the better option unless gambling is a cool idea to you.

Put a set amount you want to spend in the forge, says 10-20% of the total cost of said precursor.

Try your luck.

Decide if you want to spend the rest of 80-90% of the items worth or just buy it, lol. Really your only choice.

Save up and buy. The Mystic Forge is just a stupid money sink. Of course there is always a chance that you'll get the rifle on the first try or whatever but * that roulette shit man

You should just buy it, I knew people who spent like 300-400 g trying to get the precursor with no luck.
