You can't put upgrades in them it seems. This means my current back item (a rare) will always be better than a P capacitor (an exotic).... Doesn't make sense

thought it was obvious: to upgrade to ascended grade and eventually to shiny fractal backpiece

and the missing upgrade slot is a bug, which will be fixed far into the future since Anet lags it on the small stuff, but by then you should already have an ascended grade backpiece, the capacitor alone is over half the effort

You have to use a gift of ascension + other mats to make it ascended. It'll get an infusion slot then. When you finish upgrading it, it will be all glowy (that is ~500ecto's later)

only an infusion slot? so they still can't take normal upgrades, such as jewels?
The things just seem a waste of time and effort right now....

on the wiki there is a chart with stuff like Prototype Fractal Capacitor Back +56 (24+32)
+35 (17+18)

What do the numbers in the brackets mean?
Does upgrading it give it more stats?

ascended grade stuff has the stats of the "jewel" built in...

You make them in the forge yeah? does it give you a random stat set up then?
They really should put guides for players in game for this kind of stuff 0.0 One slip and you waste a lot of stuff...

Ascended gear doesn't let you upgrade it aside from adding an infusion, HOWEVER - they automatically include the equivalent of a gem upgrade in them.

When you transform it from a rare to an ascended item, it gains stats. The numbers in parenthesis are the stats separated into their two stats.

I can understand your confusion, however you're being a bit obtuse. The fractal capacitor that you put into the forge will come out with the same stat spread as when it was put in, just upgraded and with the equivalent of a gem upgrade as well.

it isn't random, it corresponds to the base stats of the particular fractal back you got

there are 5 different prototypes you can get and each only leads to 1 outcome, it's not random at all

3 gifts and 500 ecto if you want to upgrade it all the way to the sparkly version.. only 2 gifts and 250 ecto if you just want the infused varient.

Or just craft one of the named ascended back pieces for 50ecto+250t6, and upgrade it for 250ecto using only 1 gift. Less runs and less ecto.

Except it's not less ecto. It costs 250 ecto to infuse the Fractal backpiece, and it costs 250 ecto to infuse the Crafted backpiece, it costs 50 ecto to make the crafted backpiece, and it costs 0 ecto to make the fractal backpiece.

The extra 250 ecto for the fractal backpiece is only to change the skin, no stat increases from the final upgrade.

Oh yea the last one just makes it sparkle. Needing to get the second gift versus 50ecto leans in favor of paying the ecto personally still.

it's not just the 2nd gift, it's the fractal backpiece itself + the gift balanced against 250 tier 6 mats and 50 ecto, if you're going for something expensive (the Berserker variants that use powerful blood) then running fractals may be easier.
