You know, I really wonder why Engineer is potentially the least played class. It does absolutely everything you want, the way you want it, and the stuff you use is bordeline epic. Is the 'lore breaking blahblah' reason strong enough to discourage people?

It seems to suffer from the "mesmer-issue". The GW1 mesmer was a fantastically unique class that gave the player one hell of an experience, but PvE was so poorly designed that you might as well just one-shot everything with your assassin instead.

My sylvari engineer is my main but I've been messing with alts almost exclusively the last month or so trying to find another class I like enough to get to 80. The racial numbers surprise me more than the professions do. I thought for sure norn would be second, but when I saw the numbers I had to really think about it for a second and yeah, I actually don't see that many norn. Its just when you see them, you really see them. XD

I am pretty happy with my norn warrior recently too.

Norn Warrior - though I am playing my Norn Guardian and the Human Thief a lot more lately, as they both seem a tad more fun in WvW.

Ranger is the archetype of an adventurer, archer, woodsman, wilderness survivor in pretty much every game. I also think having a trusty pet at your side appeals to a lot of people.
They love the whole concept in spite of any balance issues.

Yes but engineers just aren't half as stylish as mesmers were .. ^_^
I mean: mesmers GW outfits compared to the average medium GW2 armour .. it's just no comparison.

After a very long period of uncertainty, I finally decided that my human warrior is, indeed, my main.  It's a soul-crushingly average choice, but I take slight solace in the fact that, despite the popularity, I've yet to run into a single other person who looked remotely like my character (featured in my forum avatar).

Misplaced desires to be "unique" aside, it just ended up feeling better than my other characters.  Armor fits the human models quite nicely, and gives you a lot of stylish options to choose from.  My personal storyline was also humorous and appealing; I like to joke that, as a Noble, I spent more time attending parties and banquets than I did adventuring in the field.

Meanwhile, warrior was just a natural choice for me.  The animations are over-the-top and enjoyable to watch (I mean, really... throwing a greatsword like a boomerang?  Classic).  It's also a class that, by popular opinion, excels in PvE but falls short in PvP - sort of the mirrored opposite of the mesmer.  This is the perfect sort of thing for me, since I spend 100% of my time in PvE.  Add in the fact that my GW1 main was also a human warrior, and the choice was - as boring as it is on paper - only natural. ^_^

My current main is an Asuran Elementalist.

I'll eventually do Human Warrior and Sylvari Ranger, but those will get started once my Asuran Elementalist hits level 80. Figure I can level the alts after I get tired of hunting for legendary items.

Then hopefully at some point I'll feel brave enough to enter PvP or WvW to finish getting map completion and the PvP banner and WvW banners for the log in screen maxed out. But those are long term goals and I might try the old run as fast as I can to get the WvW places for her before then.

At the moment I have four level 80 toons. The necro was first, then came the elementalist, followed by a warrior and then a guardian. Now I am leveling a thief. All of them are Asura. Personally I think Asura have the best animations out of any other race in this game, a dodge looks like a real dodge and running action is lively. Bad news is that a lot of Asura are hideously ugly and there are few choices available for what constitutes 'nice' or 'cute'.

Between BWE3 and headstart I was dead set on having a necro as a main but I was interested in building towards support. The elementalist gave me that in spades, which explains why I now run it as my main profession...doesn't mean necro is bad, but it didn't give me the support and playstyle I was after. The experience playing as a support elementalist has been very positive in general and I feel useful to the group in dungeon runs.

After leveling and kitting out the elementalist I put quite a bit of effort into mix and matching armor and getting matching dyes for my warrior and guardian, and this was during a time when dye drops were pitiful, so I actually had to buy the dyes off the TP rather than finding them. In both cases I'm happy with the final look as far as plate classes go, but it doesn't beat T3 Asuran cultural light armor which is best described as 'iconic', recognisable and fitting for the race.

Spoiler

I can only give my reason: I don't like the gameplay of the engineer.  The same reason I don't like the staff on the necro and the staff on the elementalist.  Those AoE thingies you must place are not compatible with my way of playing.

My main is a sylvari Ele. I love the mobility and movement needet when playing a dagger Ele. I've tried other classes but none are above lvl 15 yet. Whenever I try out a new class I always choose the weapons that need a lot of movement - for example I've found a greatsword warrior pretty boring to be honest. By now I level a charr ranger alt and am pretty satisfied with that.

I voted Sylvari Ranger, because I have the most time spent and slowly working on world completion.

Truth be told I like them all, and never "main" a toon in MMOs. Although my Norn Warrior has been my go to lately for a quick pick up due to its ease of use and utility.

Because other classes does things better.

Most likely 'one' thing better. But I suppose I shouldn't try to give arguments about the usefulness of an Engineer, being the least popular and most underrated class is one thing, constantly eating nerfs for no apparent reason is clearly another.

My vote was for Sylvari Thief, but my Sylvari Necromancer might eventually be what I consider my main. I haven't decided which one I like better. They both are 80 and have world completion. I really want my main to be the Thief no questions, but I just click with the Necromancer's skills.

Norn guardian but only because I wanted to get one character to 80 and I got it in my head there was a connection to an old RP character who was going to redeem himself by fighting Zhaitan.   My next character is going to be my asura, I really want to see the rest of their storyline.

My main is a Human condition damage Necro for dungeons, she was the best character at leveling to she is my main.  I find The Sylvari Mesmer the funnest of the characters to play, she can reflect projectiles and one shot Karka so I usually use her for that. The thief is fun to put into dangerous situations and escape. The Warrior is well rounded but a little too vanilla. I have a level 80 Guardian that I do nothing but crafting with because the Guardian is the least fun (and worst in my opinion) I have an elementalist that I am leveling and love the power and offense of the character. I will never play a ranger because it requires no skill. I would like to try an engineer but the extra character slots are expensive.

Sylvari Ranger <3. Lately I've been using my Asura Mesmer more, since it's more fun in CoE than a Ranger.

I changed my vote to Sylvari Necromancer from Sylvari Thief. As much as it saddens me, my necro really is my main currently. I love it so much in PvE.

So, I randomly asked around why the Engineer is quite underplayed, I've had many different answers and so far I've only found lore breaking issues and answers such as 'lol my warior does more damag'.Still, for something that solid (especially in dungeons) to be at the bottom of popularity, it's a mystery. I thought there would be much more steampunk, alchemy, gadget, industrial fans.

the reason engi is always last its because they dont fit the world of magic'in my opinion at least' they use mines and grenades and that makes them weird comparing to others.ofc there is all the time people defending anet, but the truth is they are all the time the last class in the polls, its been like that since day 1.they are a fail (in my opinion).i think warrior ele and ranger will always be in the top and thats not because of the skills they have but because they fit the world or lore much better than the rest, people saying engi is last because of skills or dps i think they are confuse or ignorant(in my opinion).

I've kinda dumped my Thief in favor of my Mesmer, and my Engineer to a lesser extent. I still have more hours played on my Thief though so I'm leaving my vote as it is.

Now that I have almost everything leveled (my hunter is straggling behind at 45) and mostly in full exotics, I've been going back and replaying them all.  My guardian was my "main" for quite a while, but I'm having way too much fun with my necro right now.  Wells and marks everywhere, and a screen full of white numbers - and I can outlast things that would have destroyed my guardian.

My engineer is fun, but anything it can do, I have another class that does it better.  Right now, I am on an AoE kick. I started out with my engineer running grenades, but quickly swapped over to my necro.

One of these from Anet based on % of total hours played for each gender/race/profession would be cool.  That or by % of times logged in to or something else that would represent the most played of each metric.
