When was the ability to preview armor that's not the same kind you can wear (light, medium, heavy), and why? I've stoped playing the game for a while after the ascended gear was added, and an coming back. Tried to preview a item that someone was showing on map chat but it was a different type i could wear, so i did not get the choise to preview it.

Semms like a rather useless and really bad change, and while on the subeject, was there any other small or important changes around these times (2 months or so).

It was removed temporarily not long ago. There was a bug with it, that I've never experienced, that needed fixing, so Anet removed it for the time being until it's fixed.

It's temporary. They removed it because there was a graphical bug. For instance, when previewing heavy armor with my Sylvari Mesmer, my torso would often disappear or have random textures placed on top of the armor.

It doesn't seem to be high on their list of bugs to fix, which is why they opted to remove it and fix it later.
